Proverbs 18

DOUAI-RHEIMSJERUSALEM
He that hath a mind to depart from a friend seeketh occasions: he shall ever be subject to reproach.1 Qui vit à l'écart suit son bon plaisir, contre tout conseil il s'emporte.
A fool receiveth not the words of prudence: unless thou say those things which are in his heart.2 Le sot ne prend pas plaisir à être intelligent, mais à étaler son sentiment.
The wicked man when he is come into the depth of sine, contemneth: but ignominy and reproach follow him.3 Quand vient la méchanceté, vient aussi l'affront, avec le mépris, l'opprobre.
Words from the mouth of a men are as deep water: and the fountain of wisdom as an overflowing stream.4 Des eaux profondes, voilà les paroles de l'homme: un torrent débordant, une source de sagesse.
It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to decline from the truth of judgment.5 Il n'est pas bon de favoriser le méchant, pour débouter le juste dans un jugement.
The lips of a fool intermeddle with strife: and his mouth provoketh quarrels.6 Les lèvres du sot vont au procès et sa bouche appelle les coups.
The mouth of a fool is his destruction: and his lips are the ruin of his soul.7 La bouche du sot est sa ruine et ses lèvres un piège pour sa vie.
The words of the double tongued are as if they were harmless: and they reach even to the inner parts of the bowels. Fear casteth down the slothful: and the souls of the effeminate shall be hungry.8 Les dires du calomniateur sont de friands morceaux qui descendent jusqu'au fond des entrailles.
He that is loose and slack in his work, is the brother of him that wasteth his own works.9 Quiconque est paresseux à l'ouvrage, celui-là est frère du destructeur.
The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the just runneth to it, and shall be exalted.10 Une tour forte: le nom de Yahvé! le juste y accourt et il est hors d'atteinte.
The substance of the rich man is the city of his strength, and as a strong wall compassing him about.11 La fortune du riche, voilà sa place forte: c'est une haute muraille, pense-t-il.
Before destruction, the heart of a man is exalted: and before he be glorified, it is humbled.12 Avant la ruine, le coeur humain s'élève, avant la gloire, il y a l'humilité.
He that answereth before he heareth sheweth himself to be a fool, and worthy of confusion.13 Qui riposte avant d'écouter, c'est pour lui folie et confusion.
The spirit of a man upholdeth his infirmity: but a spirit that is easily angered, who can bear?14 L'esprit de l'homme peut endurer la maladie, mais l'esprit abattu, qui le relèvera?
A wise heart shall acquire knowledge: and the ear of the wise seeketh instruction.15 Coeur intelligent acquiert la science, l'oreille des sages recherche le savoir.
A man's gift enlargeth his may, and maketh him room before princes.16 Le don que fait un homme lui ouvre la voie et le met en présence des grands.
The just is first accuser of himself: his friend cometh, and shall search him.17 On donne raison au premier qui plaide, que survienne un adversaire, il le démasque.
The lot suppresseth contentions, and determineth even between the mighty.18 Le sort met fin aux querelles et décide entre les puissants.
A brother that is helped by his brother, is like a strong city: and judgments are like the bars of cities.19 Un frère offensé est pire qu'une ville fortifiée et les querelles sont comme les verrous d'undonjon.
Of the fruit of a man's mouth shall his belly be satisfied: and the offspring of his lips shall fill him.20 Du fruit de sa bouche l'homme rassasie son estomac, du produit de ses lèvres il se rassasie.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: they that love it, shall eat the fruits thereof.21 Mort et vie sont au pouvoir de la langue, ceux qui la chérissent mangeront de son fruit.
He that hath found a good wife, hath found a good thing, and shall receive a pleasure from the Lord. He that driveth away a good wife, driveth away a good thing: but he that keepeth an adulteress, is foolish and wicked.22 Trouver une femme, c'est trouver le bonheur, c'est obtenir une faveur de Yahvé.
The poor will speak with supplications, and the rich will speak roughly.23 Le pauvre parle en suppliant, le riche répond durement.
A man amiable in society, shall be more friendly than a brother.24 Il y a des amis qui mènent à la ruine, il y en a qui sont plus chers qu'un frère.
