Brothers, certainly the will of my heart, and my prayer to God, is for them unto salvation.1 Brothers, my dearest wish and my prayer to God is for them, that they may be saved.
For I offer testimony to them, that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.2 I readily testify to their fervour for God, but it is misguided.
For, being ignorant of the justice of God, and seeking to establish their own justice, they have not subjected themselves to the justice of God.3 Not recognising God's saving justice they have tried to establish their own, instead of submitting tothe saving justice of God.
For the end of the law, Christ, is unto justice for all who believe.4 But the Law has found its fulfilment in Christ so that al who have faith wil be justified.
And Moses wrote, about the justice that is of the law, that the man who will have done justice shall live by justice.5 Moses writes of the saving justice that comes by the Law and says that whoever complies with it wilfind life in it.
But the justice that is of faith speaks in this way: Do not say in your heart: “Who shall ascend into heaven?” (that is, to bring Christ down);6 But the saving justice of faith says this: Do not think in your heart, 'Who wil go up to heaven?' --
“Or who shall descend into the abyss?” (that is, to call back Christ from the dead).7 that is to bring Christ down; or 'Who wil go down to the depths?' -- that is to bring Christ back fromthe dead.
But what does Scripture say? “The word is near, in your mouth and in your heart.” This is the word of faith, which we are preaching.8 What does it say, then? The word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, that is, theword of faith, the faith which we preach,
For if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and if you believe in your heart that God has raised him up from the dead, you shall be saved.9 that if you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe with your heart that Godraised him from the dead, then you wil be saved.
For with the heart, we believe unto justice; but with the mouth, confession is unto salvation.10 It is by believing with the heart that you are justified, and by making the declaration with your lipsthat you are saved.
For Scripture says: “All those who believe in him shall not be confounded.”11 When scripture says: No one who relies on this wil be brought to disgrace,
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek. For the same Lord is over all, richly in all who call upon him.12 it makes no distinction between Jew and Greek: the same Lord is the Lord of all, and his generosityis offered to al who appeal to him,
For all those who have called upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.13 for al who cal on the name of the Lord wil be saved.
Then in what way will those who have not believed in him call upon him? Or in what way will those who have not heard of him believe in him? And in what way will they hear of him without preaching?14 How then are they to call on him if they have not come to believe in him? And how can they believein him if they have never heard of him? And how wil they hear of him unless there is a preacher for them?
And truly, in what way will they preach, unless they have been sent, just as it has been written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who evangelize peace, of those who evangelize what is good!”15 And how wil there be preachers if they are not sent? As scripture says: How beautiful are the feet ofthe messenger of good news.
But not all are obedient to the Gospel. For Isaiah says: “Lord, who has believed our report?”16 But in fact they have not all responded to the good news. As Isaiah says: Lord, who has givencredence to what they have heard from us?
Therefore, faith is from hearing, and hearing is through the Word of Christ.17 But it is in that way faith comes, from hearing, and that means hearing the word of Christ.
But I say: Have they not heard? For certainly: “Their sound has gone forth throughout all the earth, and their words unto the limits of the whole world.”18 Wel then, I say, is it possible that they have not heard? Indeed they have: in the entire earth theirvoice stands out, their message reaches the whole world.
But I say: Has Israel not known? First, Moses says: “I will lead you into a rivalry with those who are not a nation; in the midst of a foolish nation, I will send you into wrath.”19 Wel , another question, then: is it possible that Israel did not understand? In the first place Mosessaid: I shal rouse you to jealousy with a non-people, I shal exasperate you with a stupid nation.
And Isaiah dares to say: “I was discovered by those who were not seeking me. I appeared openly to those who were not asking about me.”20 And Isaiah is even bold enough to say: I have let myself be found by those who did not seek me; Ihave let myself be seen by those who did not consult me;
Then to Israel he says: “All day long I have stretched out my hands to a people who do not believe and who contradict me.”21 and referring to Israel, he says: Al day long I have been stretching out my hands to a disobedientand rebel ious people.
