And it happened in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, so that the whole world would be enrolled.1 Or avvenne che in quei giorni usci un editto di Cesare Augusto che ordinava il censimento di tutto l'impero.
This was the first enrollment; it was made by the ruler of Syria, Quirinius.2 Questo primo censimento fu fatto mentre Cirino era preside della Siria.
And all went to be declared, each one to his own city.3 E andavano tutti a farsi scrivere, ciascuno alla sua città.
Then Joseph also ascended from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,4 Anche Giuseppe andò da Nazaret di Galilea alla città di David, chiamata Betlem, in Giudea, essendo della casa e della famiglia di David,
in order to be declared, with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child.5 a dare il nome con Maria sua sposa che era incinta.
Then it happened that, while they were there, the days were completed, so that she would give birth.6 E avvenne che mentre quivi si trovavano, per lei si compì il tempo del parto;
And she brought forth her firstborn son. And she wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them at the inn.7 e partorì il Figlio suo primogenito, lo fasciò e lo pose in una mangiatoia, perchè non c'era posto per loro nell'albergo.
And there were shepherds in the same region, being vigilant and keeping watch in the night over their flock.8 Or nelle vicinanze v'erano dei pastori che stavano desti a far la guardia notturna al loro gregge.
And behold, an Angel of the Lord stood near them, and the brightness of God shone around them, and they were struck with a great fear.9 Ed ecco presentarsi ad essi un Angelo del Signore, e la luce di Dio rifulse su di loro, e sbigottirono dal gran timore.
And the Angel said to them: “Do not be afraid. For, behold, I proclaim to you a great joy, which will be for all the people.10 Ma l'Angelo disse loro: Nontemete, ecco vi reco l'annunzio di una grande allegrezza che sara per tutto il popolo:
For today a Saviour has been born for you in the city of David: he is Christ the Lord.11 Oggi, nella città di David, vi è nato il Salvatore, che è Cristo, il Signore.
And this will be a sign for you: you will find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.”12 E lo riconoscerete da questo: troverete un bambino avvolto in fasce, a giacere in una mangiatoia.
And suddenly there was with the Angel a multitude of the celestial army, praising God and saying,13 E subito si raccolse intorno all'Angelo una schiera della milizia celeste che lodava Dio, dicendo:
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will.”14 Gloria a Dio nel più alto dei cieli, e pace in terra agli uomini di buona volontà.
And it happened that, when the Angels had departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us cross over to Bethlehem and see this word, which has happened, which the Lord has revealed to us.”15 E come gli Angeli sparirono in cielo, i pastori presero a dire tra loro: Andiamo fino a Betlem a vedere quanto è accaduto riguardo a quello che il Signore ci ha manifestato.
And they went quickly. And they found Mary and Joseph; and the infant was lying in a manger.16 E in fretta andarono, e trovarono Maria, Giuseppe e il bambino giacente nella mangiatoia.
Then, upon seeing this, they understood the word that had been spoken to them about this boy.17 E, vedendolo, si persuasero di quanto loro era stato dotto di quel bambino.
And all who heard it were amazed by this, and by those things which were told to them by the shepherds.18 Quanti ne sentirono parlare si maravigliarono delle cose loro dette dai pastori.
But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart.19 Maria poi conservava nella mente tutte queste cose, e le meditava nel suo cuore.
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told to them.20 E i pastori se ne ritornarono glorificando e lodando Dio per tutto quello che avevano udito e visto, secondo quello che era stato loro detto.
And after eight days were ended, so that the boy would be circumcised, his name was called JESUS, just as he was called by the Angel before he was conceived in the womb.21 E come passarono gli otto giorni per la circoncisione del fanciullo, gli fu posto nome Gesù, com'era stato chiamato dall'Angelo prima che nel seno materno fosse concepito.
And after the days of her purification were fulfilled, according to the law of Moses, they brought him to Jerusalem, in order to present him to the Lord,22 E quando furono compiuti i giorni della purificazione di lei, secondo la legge di Mosè, lo portarono a Gerusalemme, per presentarlo al Signore;
just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “For every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord,”23 secondo quello che sta scritto nella legge del Signore: Ogni primogenito maschio sarà consacrato al Signore;
and in order to offer a sacrifice, according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”24 e per far l'offerta prescritta dalla legge del Signore, d'un paio di tortore o di due piccole colombe.
And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and God-fearing, awaiting the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Spirit was with him.25 C'era allora in Gerusalemme un uomo di nome Simeone, uomo giusto e pio che aspettava la consolazione d'Israele; e lo Spirito Santo era in lui:
And he had received an answer from the Holy Spirit: that he would not see his own death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.26 e gli aveva assicurato che non sarebbe morto prima di vedere il Cristo del Signore.
And he went with the Spirit to the temple. And when the child Jesus was brought in by his parents, in order to act on his behalf according to the custom of the law,27 E mosso dallo Spirito Santo, andò al tempio; e quando i genitori vi portarono il bambino Gesù, per fare a suo riguardo secondo il rito della legge,
he also took him up, into his arms, and he blessed God and said:28 egli pure se lo prese in braccio, e benedicendo Dio esclamò:
“Now you may dismiss your servant in peace, O Lord, according to your word.29 Or lascia, o Signore, che il tuo servo, secondo la tua parola, se ne vada in pace;
For my eyes have seen your salvation,30 perchè gli occhi miei hanno mirato il tuo Salvatore,
which you have prepared before the face of all peoples:31 da te preparato nel cospetto di tutti i popoli,
the light of revelation to the nations and the glory of your people Israel.”32 luce di rivelazione alle Genti e Gloria d'Israele tuo popolo.
And his father and mother were wondering over these things, which were spoken about him.33 E il padre e la madre di Gesù restavano maravigliati di quanto si diceva di lui.
And Simeon blessed them, and he said to his mother Mary: “Behold, this one has been set for the ruin and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and as a sign which will be contradicted.34 Simeone li benedisse dicendo però a Maria sua madre: Ecco, egli è posto a rovina e a risurrezione di molti in Israele e come segno di contraddizione;
And a sword will pass through your own soul, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”35 anche a te una spada trapasserà l'anima, affinchè restino svelati i pensieri di molti inori.
And there was a prophetess, Anna, a daughter of Phanuel, from the tribe of Asher. She was very advanced in years, and she had lived with her husband for seven years from her virginity.36 Vi era anche una profetessa, Anna, figlia di Fanuel, della tribù di Aser: questa era molto avanzata in età, e vissuta col marito otto anni dalla sua verginità,
And then she was a widow, even to her eighty-fourth year. And without departing from the temple, she was a servant to fasting and prayer, night and day.37 e rimasta vedova fino agli ottantaquattro anni, non usciva mai dal tempio; ma serviva a Dio notte e giorno in digiuni e preghiere.
And entering at the same hour, she confessed to the Lord. And she spoke about him to all who were awaiting the redemption of Israel.38 E anche lei, capitata proprio in quella medesima ora, dava gloria al Signore, parlando del bambino a quanti aspettavano la redenzione d'Israele.
And after they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their city, Nazareth.39 E come ebbero adempito ogni cosa prescritta dalla legge del Signore, tornarono in Galilea, alla loro città di Nazaret.
Now the child grew, and he was strengthened with the fullness of wisdom. And the grace of God was in him.40 E il fanciullo cresceva e si irrobustiva pieno di sapienza, o la Grazia di Dio era in lui.
And his parents went every year to Jerusalem, at the time of the solemnity of Passover.41 Ed i suoi genitori andavano ogni anno a Gerusalemme per la solennità della Pasqua.
And when he had become twelve years old, they ascended to Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast day.42 Or quando egli fu a dodici anni, essendo essi andati a Gerusalemme, secondo l'usanza della festa,
And having completed the days, when they returned, the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem. And his parents did not realize this.43 al ritorno, passati i giorni della solennità, il fanciullo Gesù rimase in Gerusalemme, nè se ne avvidero i suoi genitori.
But, supposing that he was in the company, they went a day’s journey, seeking him among their relatives and acquaintances.44 Supponendo che fosse nella comitiva, fecero una giornata; poi sì misero a cercarlo fra i parenti e i conoscenti.
And not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him.45 Ma non avendolo trovato, tornarono a Gerusalemme, a cercarlo.
And it happened that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, listening to them and questioning them.46 E avvenne che dopo tre giorni lo trovarono nel tempio, seduto fra i dottori ad ascoltarli ed interrogarli,
But all who listened to him were astonished over his prudence and his responses.47 mentre gli uditori stupivano della sua sapienza e delle sue risposti1.
And upon seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: “Son, why have you acted this way toward us? Behold, your father and I were seeking you in sorrow.”48 E vedendolo ne fecero le maraviglie. E sua madre gli disse: Figlio, perchè ci hai fatto questo? Ecco, tuo padre ed io, angosciati, ti cercavamo!
And he said to them: “How is it that you were seeking me? For did you not know that it is necessary for me to be in these things which are of my Father?”49 Ed egli rispose loro: E perchè cercarmi? Non sapevate che io devo occuparmi di ciò che spetta al Padre mio?
And they did not understand the word that he spoke to them.50 Ed essi non intesero le parole loro dette da lui.
And he descended with them and went to Nazareth. And he was subordinate to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart.51 E se ne andò con loro e tornò a Nazaret, e stava loro soggetto. Però sua madre serbava in cuor suo tutte queste cose.
And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and in age, and in grace, with God and men.52 E Gesù cresceva in sapienza, in età e in grazia dinanzi a Dio e agli uomini.
