CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINDIODATI
And it happened in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, so that the whole world would be enrolled.1 OR in que’ dì avvenne che un decreto uscì da parte di Cesare Augusto, che si facesse la rassegna di tutto il mondo.
This was the first enrollment; it was made by the ruler of Syria, Quirinius.2 Questa rassegna fu la prima che fu fatta, sotto Quirinio, governator della Siria.
And all went to be declared, each one to his own city.3 E tutti andavano, per esser rassegnati, ciascuno nella sua città.
Then Joseph also ascended from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,4 Or anche Giuseppe salì di Galilea, della città di Nazaret, nella Giudea, nella città di Davide, che si chiama Betleem; perciocchè egli era della casa, e nazione di Davide;
in order to be declared, with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child.5 per esser rassegnato con Maria, ch’era la moglie che gli era stata sposata, la quale era gravida.
Then it happened that, while they were there, the days were completed, so that she would give birth.6 Or avvenne che, mentre eran quivi, il termine nel quale ella dovea partorire si compiè.
And she brought forth her firstborn son. And she wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them at the inn.7 Ed ella partorì il suo figliuolo primogenito, e lo fasciò, e lo pose a giacer nella mangiatoia; perciocchè non vi era luogo per loro nell’albergo
And there were shepherds in the same region, being vigilant and keeping watch in the night over their flock.8 OR nella medesima contrada vi erano de’ pastori, i quali dimoravano fuori a’ campi, facendo le guardie della notte intorno alla lor greggia.
And behold, an Angel of the Lord stood near them, and the brightness of God shone around them, and they were struck with a great fear.9 Ed ecco, un angelo del Signore si presentò a loro, e la gloria del Signore risplendè d’intorno a loro; ed essi temettero di gran timore.
And the Angel said to them: “Do not be afraid. For, behold, I proclaim to you a great joy, which will be for all the people.10 Ma l’angelo disse loro: Non temiate; perciocchè io vi annunzio una grande allegrezza, che tutto il popolo avrà;
For today a Saviour has been born for you in the city of David: he is Christ the Lord.11 cioè che oggi, nella città di Davide, vi è nato il Salvatore, che è Cristo, il Signore.
And this will be a sign for you: you will find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.”12 E questo ve ne sarà il segno: voi troverete il fanciullino fasciato, coricato nella mangiatoia.
And suddenly there was with the Angel a multitude of the celestial army, praising God and saying,13 E in quello stante vi fu con l’angelo una moltitudine dell’esercito celeste, lodando Iddio, e dicendo:
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will.”14 Gloria a Dio ne’ luoghi altissimi, Pace in terra, Benivoglienza inverso gli uomini,
And it happened that, when the Angels had departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us cross over to Bethlehem and see this word, which has happened, which the Lord has revealed to us.”15 Ed avvenne che quando gli angeli se ne furono andati da loro al cielo, que’ pastori disser fra loro: Or passiam fino in Betleem, e veggiamo questa cosa ch’è avvenuta, la quale il Signore ci ha fatta assapere.
And they went quickly. And they found Mary and Joseph; and the infant was lying in a manger.16 E vennero in fretta, e trovarono Maria, e Giuseppe, e il fanciullino, che giaceva nella mangiatoia.
Then, upon seeing this, they understood the word that had been spoken to them about this boy.17 E vedutolo, divolgarono ciò ch’era loro stato detto di quel piccolo fanciullo.
And all who heard it were amazed by this, and by those things which were told to them by the shepherds.18 E tutti coloro che li udirono si maravigliarono delle cose ch’eran lor dette da’ pastori.
But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart.19 E Maria conservava in sè tutte queste parole, conferendole insieme nel cuor suo.
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told to them.20 E i pastori se ne ritornarono, glorificando e lodando Iddio di tutte le cose che aveano udite e vedute, secondo ch’era loro stato parlato
And after eight days were ended, so that the boy would be circumcised, his name was called JESUS, just as he was called by the Angel before he was conceived in the womb.21 E QUANDO gli otto giorni, in capo de’ quali egli dovea esser circonciso, furon compiuti, gli fu posto nome GESÙ, secondo ch’era stato nominato dall’angelo, innanzi che fosse conceputo nel seno.
And after the days of her purification were fulfilled, according to the law of Moses, they brought him to Jerusalem, in order to present him to the Lord,22 E quando i giorni della loro purificazione furon compiuti secondo la legge di Mosè, portarono il fanciullo in Gerusalemme, per presentarlo al Signore
just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “For every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord,”23 come egli è scritto nella legge del Signore: Ogni maschio che apre la matrice sarà chiamato Santo al Signore;
and in order to offer a sacrifice, according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”24 e per offerire il sacrificio, secondo ciò ch’è detto nella legge del Signore, d’un paio di tortole, o di due pippioni
And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and God-fearing, awaiting the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Spirit was with him.25 OR ecco, vi era in Gerusalemme un uomo il cui nome era Simeone; e quell’uomo era giusto, e religioso, ed aspettava la consolazione d’Israele; e lo Spirito Santo era sopra lui.
And he had received an answer from the Holy Spirit: that he would not see his own death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.26 E gli era stato divinamente rivelato dallo Spirito Santo, ch’egli non vedrebbe la morte, che prima non avesse veduto il Cristo del Signore.
And he went with the Spirit to the temple. And when the child Jesus was brought in by his parents, in order to act on his behalf according to the custom of the law,27 Egli adunque, per movimento dello Spirito, venne nel tempio; e, come il padre e la madre vi portavano il fanciullo Gesù, per far di lui secondo l’usanza della legge,
he also took him up, into his arms, and he blessed God and said:28 egli sel recò nelle braccia, e benedisse Iddio, e disse:
“Now you may dismiss your servant in peace, O Lord, according to your word.29 Ora, Signore, ne mandi il tuo servitore in pace, Secondo la tua parola;
For my eyes have seen your salvation,30 Perciocchè gli occhi miei hanno veduta la tua salute;
which you have prepared before the face of all peoples:31 La quale tu hai preparata, per metterla davanti a tutti i popoli;
the light of revelation to the nations and the glory of your people Israel.”32 Luce da illuminar le Genti, E la gloria del tuo popolo Israele.
And his father and mother were wondering over these things, which were spoken about him.33 E Giuseppe, e la madre d’esso, si maravigliavano delle cose ch’erano dette da lui.
And Simeon blessed them, and he said to his mother Mary: “Behold, this one has been set for the ruin and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and as a sign which will be contradicted.34 E Simeone li benedisse, e disse a Maria, madre di esso: Ecco, costui è posto per la ruina, e per lo rilevamento di molti in Israele; e per segno al quale sarà contradetto
And a sword will pass through your own soul, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”35 ed una spada trafiggerà a te stessa l’anima; acciocchè i pensieri di molti cuori sieno rivelati.
And there was a prophetess, Anna, a daughter of Phanuel, from the tribe of Asher. She was very advanced in years, and she had lived with her husband for seven years from her virginity.36 Vi era ancora Anna profetessa, figliuola di Fanuel, della tribù di Aser; la quale era molto attempata, essendo vissuta sett’anni col suo marito dopo la sua verginità.
And then she was a widow, even to her eighty-fourth year. And without departing from the temple, she was a servant to fasting and prayer, night and day.37 Ed era vedova d’età d’intorno ad ottantaquattro anni; e non si partiva mai dal tempio, servendo a Dio, notte e giorno, in digiuni ed orazioni.
And entering at the same hour, she confessed to the Lord. And she spoke about him to all who were awaiting the redemption of Israel.38 Ella ancora, sopraggiunta in quell’ora, lodava il Signore, e parlava di quel fanciullo a tutti coloro che aspettavano la redenzione in Gerusalemme.
And after they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their city, Nazareth.39 ORA, quando ebber compiute tutte le cose che si convenivano fare secondo la legge del Signore, ritornarono in Galilea, in Nazaret, lor città.
Now the child grew, and he was strengthened with the fullness of wisdom. And the grace of God was in him.40 E il fanciullo cresceva, e si fortificava in ispirito, essendo ripieno di sapienza; e la grazia di Dio era sopra lui
And his parents went every year to Jerusalem, at the time of the solemnity of Passover.41 Or suo padre e sua madre andavano ogni anno in Gerusalemme, nella festa della Pasqua.
And when he had become twelve years old, they ascended to Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast day.42 E come egli fu d’età di dodici anni, essendo essi saliti in Gerusalemme, secondo l’usanza della festa; ed avendo compiuti i giorni d’essa,
And having completed the days, when they returned, the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem. And his parents did not realize this.43 quando se ne tornavano, il fanciullo Gesù rimase in Gerusalemme, senza la saputa di Giuseppe, nè della madre di esso.
But, supposing that he was in the company, they went a day’s journey, seeking him among their relatives and acquaintances.44 E stimando ch’egli fosse fra la compagnia, camminarono una giornata; ed allora si misero a cercarlo fra i lor parenti, e fra i lor conoscenti.
And not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him.45 E, non avendolo trovato, tornarono in Gerusalemme, cercandolo.
And it happened that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, listening to them and questioning them.46 Ed avvenne che tre giorni appresso, lo trovaron nel tempio, sedendo in mezzo de’ dottori, ascoltandoli, e facendo loro delle domande.
But all who listened to him were astonished over his prudence and his responses.47 E tutti coloro che l’udivano stupivano del suo senno, e delle sue risposte.
And upon seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: “Son, why have you acted this way toward us? Behold, your father and I were seeking you in sorrow.”48 E quando essi lo videro, sbigottirono. E sua madre gli disse: Figliuolo, perchè ci hai fatto così? ecco, tuo padre ed io ti cercavamo, essendo in gran travaglio.
And he said to them: “How is it that you were seeking me? For did you not know that it is necessary for me to be in these things which are of my Father?”49 Ma egli disse loro: Perchè mi cercavate? non sapevate voi ch’egli mi conviene attendere alle cose del Padre mio?
And they did not understand the word that he spoke to them.50 Ed essi non intesero le parole ch’egli avea lor dette.
And he descended with them and went to Nazareth. And he was subordinate to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart.51 Ed egli discese con loro, e venne in Nazaret, ed era loro soggetto. E sua madre riserbava tutte queste parole nel suo cuore.
And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and in age, and in grace, with God and men.52 E Gesù si avanzava in sapienza, e in istatura, e in grazia dinanzi a Dio, e dinanzi gli uomini
