NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
"The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard.1 Simile est enim regnum cae lorum homini patri familias, qui exiit primomane conducere operarios in vineam suam;
After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard.2 conventione autem facta cum operariisex denario diurno, misit eos in vineam suam.
Going out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace,3 Et egressus circa horam tertiamvidit alios stantes in foro otiosos
and he said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.'4 et illis dixit: “Ite et vos in vineam;et, quod iustum fuerit, dabo vobis”.
So they went off. (And) he went out again around noon, and around three o'clock, and did likewise.5 Illi autem abierunt. Iterum autem exiitcirca sextam et nonam horam et fecit similiter.
Going out about five o'clock, he found others standing around, and said to them, 'Why do you stand here idle all day?'6 Circa undecimam vero exiit etinvenit alios stantes et dicit illis: “Quid hic statis tota die otiosi?”.
They answered, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard.'7 Dicunt ei: “Quia nemo nos conduxit”. Dicit illis: “Ite et vos in vineam”.
When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.'8 Cum sero autem factum esset, dicit dominus vineae procuratori suo: “ Vocaoperarios et redde illis mercedem incipiens a novissimis usque ad primos ”.
When those who had started about five o'clock came, each received the usual daily wage.9 Et cum venissent, qui circa undecimam horam venerant, acceperunt singulidenarium.
So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage.10 Venientes autem primi arbitrati sunt quod plus essent accepturi;acceperunt autem et ipsi singuli denarium.
And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner,11 Accipientes autem murmurabantadversus patrem familias
saying, 'These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and the heat.'12 dicentes: “Hi novissimi una hora fecerunt, etpares illos nobis fecisti, qui portavimus pondus diei et aestum!”.
He said to one of them in reply, 'My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage?13 At illerespondens uni eorum dixit: “Amice, non facio tibi iniuriam; nonne ex denarioconvenisti mecum?
Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you?14 Tolle, quod tuum est, et vade; volo autem et huic novissimodare sicut et tibi.
(Or) am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?'15 Aut non licet mihi, quod volo, facere de meis? An oculustuus nequam est, quia ego bonus sum?”.
Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last."16 Sic erunt novissimi primi, et primi novissimi ”.
As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve (disciples) aside by themselves, and said to them on the way,17 Et ascendens Iesus Hierosolymam assumpsit Duodecim discipulos secreto et aitillis in via:
"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death,18 “ Ecce ascendimus Hierosolymam, et Filius hominis tradeturprincipibus sacerdotum et scribis, et condemnabunt eum morte
and hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day."19 et tradent eumgentibus ad illudendum et flagellandum et crucifigendum, et tertia die resurget”.
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached him with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.20 Tunc accessit ad eum mater filiorum Zebedaei cum filiis suis, adorans etpetens aliquid ab eo.
He said to her, "What do you wish?" She answered him, "Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom."21 Qui dixit ei: “ Quid vis? ”. Ait illi: “ Dic utsedeant hi duo filii mei unus ad dexteram tuam et unus ad sinistram in regno tuo”.
Jesus said in reply, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?" They said to him, "We can."22 Respondens autem Iesus dixit: “ Nescitis quid petatis. Potestis biberecalicem, quem ego bibiturus sum? ”. Dicunt ei: “ Possumus ”.
He replied, "My cup you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left (, this) is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."23 Ait illis:“ Calicem quidem meum bibetis, sedere autem ad dexteram meam et sinistram nonest meum dare illud, sed quibus paratum est a Patre meo ”.
When the ten heard this, they became indignant at the two brothers.24 Et audientes decem indignati sunt de duobus fratribus.
But Jesus summoned them and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt.25 Iesus autem vocaviteos ad se et ait: “ Scitis quia principes gentium dominantur eorum et, quimagni sunt, potestatem exercent in eos.
But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;26 Non ita erit inter vos, sed quicumquevoluerit inter vos magnus fieri, erit vester minister;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.27 et, quicumque volueritinter vos primus esse, erit vester servus;
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."28 sicut Filius hominis non venitministrari sed ministrare et dare animam suam redemptionem pro multis ”.
As they left Jericho, a great crowd followed him.29 Et egredientibus illis ab Iericho, secuta est eum turba multa.
Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, "[Lord,] Son of David, have pity on us!"30 Et ecce duocaeci sedentes secus viam audierunt quia Iesus transiret et clamaveruntdicentes: “ Domine, miserere nostri, fili David! ”.
The crowd warned them to be silent, but they called out all the more, "Lord, Son of David, have pity on us!"31 Turba autemincrepabat eos, ut tacerent; at illi magis clamabant dicentes: “ Domine,miserere nostri, fili David! ”.
Jesus stopped and called them and said, "What do you want me to do for you?"32 Et stetit Iesus et vocavit eos et ait: “Quid vultis, ut faciam vobis?”.
They answered him, "Lord, let our eyes be opened."33 Dicunt illi: “ Domine, ut aperianturoculi nostri ”.
Moved with pity, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight, and followed him.34 Misertus autem Iesus, tetigit oculos eorum; et confestimviderunt et secuti sunt eum.
