NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
"The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard.1 'Now the kingdom of Heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard.
After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard.2 He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day and sent them to his vineyard.
Going out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace,3 Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place
and he said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.'4 and said to them, "You go to my vineyard too and I wil give you a fair wage."
So they went off. (And) he went out again around noon, and around three o'clock, and did likewise.5 So they went. At about the sixth hour and again at about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same.
Going out about five o'clock, he found others standing around, and said to them, 'Why do you stand here idle all day?'6 Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing around, and he said tothem, "Why have you been standing here idle all day?"
They answered, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard.'7 "Because no one has hired us," they answered. He said to them, "You go into my vineyard too."
When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.'8 In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, "Call the workers and pay them theirwages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first."
When those who had started about five o'clock came, each received the usual daily wage.9 So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each.
So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage.10 When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each.
And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner,11 They took it, but grumbled at the landowner saying,
saying, 'These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and the heat.'12 "The men who came last have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us,though we have done a heavy day's work in al the heat."
He said to one of them in reply, 'My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage?13 He answered one of them and said, "My friend, I am not being unjust to you; did we not agree on onedenarius?
Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you?14 Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the lastcomer as much as I pay you.
(Or) am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?'15 Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why should you be envious because I am generous?"
Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last."16 Thus the last wil be first, and the first, last.'
As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve (disciples) aside by themselves, and said to them on the way,17 Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, and on the road he took the Twelve aside by themselves and saidto them,
"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death,18 'Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man is about to be handed over to the chiefpriests and scribes. They wil condemn him to death
and hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day."19 and will hand him over to the gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified; and on the third dayhe wil be raised up again.'
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached him with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.20 Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came with her sons to make a request of him, and bowed low;
He said to her, "What do you wish?" She answered him, "Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom."21 and he said to her, 'What is it you want?' She said to him, 'Promise that these two sons of mine maysit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your kingdom.'
Jesus said in reply, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?" They said to him, "We can."22 Jesus answered, 'You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going todrink?' They replied, 'We can.'
He replied, "My cup you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left (, this) is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."23 He said to them, 'Very wel ; you shal drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been al otted by my Father.'
When the ten heard this, they became indignant at the two brothers.24 When the other ten heard this they were indignant with the two brothers.
But Jesus summoned them and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt.25 But Jesus cal ed them to him and said, 'You know that among the gentiles the rulers lord it over them, and great men make their authority felt.
But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;26 Among you this is not to happen. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be yourservant,
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.27 and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave,
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."28 just as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'
As they left Jericho, a great crowd followed him.29 As they left Jericho a large crowd fol owed him.
Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, "[Lord,] Son of David, have pity on us!"30 And now there were two blind men sitting at the side of the road. When they heard that it was Jesuswho was passing by, they shouted, 'Lord! Have pity on us, son of David.'
The crowd warned them to be silent, but they called out all the more, "Lord, Son of David, have pity on us!"31 And the crowd scolded them and told them to keep quiet, but they only shouted the louder, 'Lord!Have pity on us, son of David.'
Jesus stopped and called them and said, "What do you want me to do for you?"32 Jesus stopped, cal ed them over and said, 'What do you want me to do for you?'
They answered him, "Lord, let our eyes be opened."33 They said to him, 'Lord, let us have our sight back.'
Moved with pity, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight, and followed him.34 Jesus felt pity for them and touched their eyes, and at once their sight returned and they fol owedhim.
