KING JAMES BIBLEVULGATA
1 Every friend saith, I am his friend also: but there is a friend, which is only a friend in name.1 Omnis amicus dicet : Et ego amicitiam copulavi :
sed est amicus solo nomine amicus.
Nonne tristitia inest usque ad mortem ?
2 Is it not a grief unto death, when a companion and friend is turned to an enemy?2 sodalis autem et amicus ad inimicitiam convertentur.
3 O wicked imagination, whence camest thou in to cover the earth with deceit?3 O præsumptio nequissima, unde creata es
cooperire aridam malitia et dolositate illius ?
4 There is a companion, which rejoiceth in the prosperity of a friend, but in the time of trouble will be against him.4 Sodalis amico conjucundatur in oblectationibus,
et in tempore tribulationis adversarius erit.
5 There is a companion, which helpeth his friend for the belly, and taketh up the buckler against the enemy.5 Sodalis amico condolet causa ventris,
et contra hostem accipiet scutum.
6 Forget not thy friend in thy mind, and be not unmindful of him in thy riches.6 Non obliviscaris amici tui in animo tuo,
et non immemor sis illius in opibus tuis.
7 Every counsellor extolleth counsel; but there is some that counselleth for himself.7 Noli consiliari cum eo qui tibi insidiatur,
et a zelantibus te absconde consilium.
8 Beware of a counsellor, and know before what need he hath; for he will counsel for himself; lest he cast the lot upon thee,8 Omnis consiliarius prodit consilium,
sed est consiliarius in semetipso.
9 And say unto thee, Thy way is good: and afterward he stand on the other side, to see what shall befall thee.9 A consiliario serva animam tuam :
prius scito quæ sit illius necessitas :
et ipse enim animo suo cogitabit :
10 Consult not with one that suspecteth thee: and hide thy counsel from such as envy thee.10 ne forte mittat sudem in terram,
et dicat tibi :
11 Neither consult with a woman touching her of whom she is jealous; neither with a coward in matters of war; nor with a merchant concerning exchange; nor with a buyer of selling; nor with an envious man of thankfulness; nor with an unmerciful man touching kindness; nor with the slothful for any work; nor with an hireling for a year of finishing work; nor with an idle servant of much business: hearken not unto these in any matter of counsel.11 Bona est via tua :
et stet e contrario videre quid tibi eveniat.
12 But be continually with a godly man, whom thou knowest to keep the commandments of the Lord, whose, mind is according to thy mind, and will sorrow with thee, if thou shalt miscarry.12 Cum viro irreligioso tracta de sanctitate,
et cum injusto de justitia,
et cum muliere de ea quæ æmulatur,
cum timido de bello,
cum negotiatore de trajectione,
cum emptore de venditione,
cum viro livido de gratiis agendis,
13 And let the counsel of thine own heart stand: for there is no man more faithful unto thee than it.13 cum impio de pietate,
cum inhonesto de honestate,
cum operario agrario de omni opere,
14 For a man's mind is sometime wont to tell him more than seven watchmen, that sit above in an high tower.14 cum operario annuali de consummatione anni,
cum servo pigro de multa operatione.
Non attendas his in omni consilio :
15 And above all this pray to the most High, that he will direct thy way in truth.15 sed cum viro sancto assiduus esto,
quemcumque cognoveris observantem timorem Dei :
16 Let reason go before every enterprize, and counsel before every action.16 cujus anima est secundum animam tuam,
et qui, cum titubaveris in tenebris, condolebit tibi.
17 The countenance is a sign of changing of the heart.17 Cor boni consilii statue tecum :
non est enim tibi aliud pluris illo.
18 Four manner of things appear: good and evil, life and death: but the tongue ruleth over them continually.18 Anima viri sancti enuntiat aliquando vera,
quam septem circumspectores sedentes in excelso ad speculandum.
19 There is one that is wise and teacheth many, and yet is unprofitable to himself.19 Et in his omnibus deprecare Altissimum,
ut dirigat in veritate viam tuam.
20 There is one that sheweth wisdom in words, and is hated: he shall be destitute of all food.20 Ante omnia opera verbum verax præcedat te,
et ante omnem actum consilium stabile.
21 For grace is not given, him from the Lord, because he is deprived of all wisdom.21 Verbum nequam immutabit cor :
ex quo partes quatuor oriuntur :
bonum et malum, vita et mors :
et dominatrix illorum est assidua lingua.
Est vir astutus multorum eruditor,
et animæ suæ inutilis est.
22 Another is wise to himself; and the fruits of understanding are commendable in his mouth.22 Vir peritus multos erudivit,
et animæ suæ suavis est.
23 A wise man instructeth his people; and the fruits of his understanding fail not.23 Qui sophistice loquitur odibilis est :
in omni re defraudabitur.
24 A wise man shall be filled with blessing; and all they that see him shall count him happy.24 Non est illi data a Domino gratia,
omni enim sapientia defraudatus est.
25 The days of the life of man may be numbered: but the days of Israel are innumerable.25 Est sapiens animæ suæ sapiens,
et fructus sensus illius laudabilis.
26 A wise man shall inherit glory among his people, and his name shall be perpetual.26 Vir sapiens plebem suam erudit,
et fructus sensus illius fideles sunt.
27 My son, prove thy soul in thy life, and see what is evil for it, and give not that unto it.27 Vir sapiens implebitur benedictionibus,
et videntes illum laudabunt.
28 For all things are not profitable for all men, neither hath every soul pleasure in every thing.28 Vita viri in numero dierum :
dies autem Israël innumerabiles sunt.
29 Be not unsatiable in any dainty thing, nor too greedy upon meats:29 Sapiens in populo hæreditabit honorem,
et nomen illius erit vivens in æternum.
30 For excess of meats bringeth sickness, and surfeiting will turn into choler.30 Fili, in vita tua tenta animam tuam,
et si fuerit nequam non des illi potestatem :
31 By surfeiting have many perished; but he that taketh heed prolongeth his life.31 non enim omnia omnibus expediunt,
et non omni animæ omne genus placet.
32 Noli avidus esse in omni epulatione,
et non te effundas super omnem escam :
33 in multis enim escis erit infirmitas,
et aviditas appropinquabit usque ad choleram.
34 Propter crapulam multi obierunt :
qui autem abstinens est adjiciet vitam.
