Première épître aux Corinthiens 9

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ne suis-je pas libre? Ne suis-je pas apôtre? N'ai-je donc pas vu Jésus, notre Seigneur? N'êtes-vous pas mon oeuvre dans le Seigneur?	1 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?
2 Si pour d'autres je ne suis pas apôtre, pour vous du moins je le suis; car c'est vous qui, dans leSeigneur, êtes le sceau de mon apostolat.	2 Even if to others I am not an apostle, to you at any rate I am, for you are the seal of my apostolate inthe Lord.
3 Ma défense contre ceux qui m'accusent, la voici:	3 To those who want to interrogate me, this is my answer.
4 N'avons-nous pas le droit de manger et de boire?	4 Have we not every right to eat and drink?
5 N'avons-nous pas le droit d'emmener avec nous une femme chrétienne, comme les autresapôtres, et les frères du Seigneur, et Céphas?	5 And every right to be accompanied by a Christian wife, like the other apostles, like the brothers of theLord, and like Cephas?
6 Ou bien, est-ce que moi seul et Barnabé, nous n'avons pas le droit de ne pas travailler?	6 Are Barnabas and I the only ones who have no right to stop working?
7 Qui fait jamais campagne à ses propres frais? Qui plante une vigne et n'en mange pas le fruit?Qui fait paître un troupeau et ne se nourrit pas du lait du troupeau?	7 What soldier would ever serve in the army at his own expense? And who is there who would plant avineyard and never eat the fruit from it; or would keep a flock and not feed on the milk from his flock?
8 N'y a-t-il là que propos humains? Ou bien la Loi ne le dit-elle pas aussi?	8 Do not think that this is merely worldly wisdom. Does not the Law say exactly the same? It is written inthe Law of Moses:
9 C'est bien dans la Loi de Moïse qu'il est écrit: Tu ne muselleras pas le boeuf qui foule le grain.Dieu se mettrait-il en peine des boeufs?	9 You must not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn. Is it about oxen that God is concernedhere,
10 N'est-ce pas évidemment pour nous qu'il parle? Oui, c'est pour nous que cela a été écrit: celuiqui laboure doit labourer dans l'espérance, et celui qui foule le grain, dans l'espérance d'en avoir sa part.	10 or is it not said entirely for our sake? Clearly it was written for our sake, because it is right thatwhoever ploughs should plough with the expectation of having his share, and whoever threshes should threshwith the expectation of having his share.
11 Si nous avons semé en vous les biens spirituels, est-ce chose extraordinaire que nousrécoltions vos biens temporels?	11 If we have sown the seed of spiritual things in you, is it too much to ask that we should receive fromyou a crop of material things?
12 Si d'autres ont ce droit sur vous, ne l'avons-nous pas davantage? Cependant nous n'avons pasusé de ce droit. Nous supportons tout, au contraire, pour ne pas créer d'obstacle à l'Evangile du Christ.	12 Others have been given such rights over you and do we not deserve more? In fact, we have neverexercised this right; on the contrary, we have put up with anything rather than obstruct the gospel of Christ in anyway.
13 Ne savez-vous pas que les ministres du temple vivent du temple, que ceux qui servent àl'autel partagent avec l'autel?	13 Do you not realise that the ministers in the Temple get their food from the Temple, and those whoserve at the altar can claim their share from the altar?
14 De même, le Seigneur a prescrit à ceux qui annoncent l'Evangile de vivre de l'Evangile.	14 In the same way, the Lord gave the instruction that those who preach the gospel should get their livingfrom the gospel.
15 Mais je n'ai usé, moi, d'aucun de ces droits, et je n'écris pas cela pour qu'il en soit ainsi à monégard; plutôt mourir que de... Mon titre de gloire, personne ne le réduira à néant.	15 However, I have never availed myself of any rights of this kind; and I have not written this to securesuch treatment for myself; I would rather die than that . . . No one shal take from me this ground of boasting.
16 Annoncer l'Evangile en effet n'est pas pour moi un titre de gloire; c'est une nécessité quim'incombe. Oui, malheur à moi si je n'annonçais pas l'Evangile!	16 In fact, preaching the gospel gives me nothing to boast of, for I am under compulsion and I should bein trouble if I failed to do it.
17 Si j'avais l'initiative de cette tâche, j'aurais droit à une récompense; si je ne l'ai pas, c'est unecharge qui m'est confiée.	17 If I did it on my own initiative I would deserve a reward; but if I do it under compulsion I am simplyaccepting a task entrusted to me.
18 Quelle est donc ma récompense? C'est qu'en annonçant l'Evangile, j'offre gratuitementl'Evangile, sans user du droit que me confère l'Evangile.	18 What reward do I have, then? That in my preaching I offer the gospel free of charge to avoid using therights which the gospel al ows me.
19 Oui, libre à l'égard de tous, je me suis fait l'esclave de tous, afin de gagner le plus grandnombre.	19 So though I was not a slave to any human being, I put myself in slavery to al people, to win as manyas I could.
20 Je me suis fait Juif avec les Juifs, afin de gagner les Juifs; sujet de la Loi avec les sujets de laLoi - moi, qui ne suis pas sujet de la Loi - afin de gagner les sujets de la Loi.	20 To the Jews I made myself as a Jew, to win the Jews; to those under the Law as one under the Law(though I am not), in order to win those under the Law;
21 Je me suis fait un sans-loi avec les sans-loi - moi qui ne suis pas sans une loi de Dieu, étantsous la loi du Christ - afin de gagner les sans-loi.	21 to those outside the Law as one outside the Law, though I am not outside the Law but under Christ'slaw, to win those outside the Law.
22 Je me suis fait faible avec les faibles, afin de gagner les faibles. Je me suis fait tout à tous,afin d'en sauver à tout prix quelques-uns.	22 To the weak, I made myself weak, to win the weak. I accommodated myself to people in all kinds ofdifferent situations, so that by al possible means I might bring some to salvation.
23 Et tout cela, je le fais à cause de l'Evangile, afin d'en avoir ma part.	23 Al this I do for the sake of the gospel, that I may share its benefits with others.
24 Ne savez-vous pas que, dans les courses du stade, tous courent, mais un seul obtient le prix?Courez donc de manière à le remporter.	24 Do you not realise that, though al the runners in the stadium take part in the race, only one of themgets the prize? Run like that -- to win.
25 Tout athlète se prive de tout; mais eux, c'est pour obtenir une couronne périssable, nous uneimpérissable.	25 Every athlete concentrates completely on training, and this is to win a wreath that wil wither, whereasours wil never wither.
26 Et c'est bien ainsi que je cours, moi, non à l'aventure; c'est ainsi que je fais du pugilat, sansfrapper dans le vide.	26 So that is how I run, not without a clear goal; and how I box, not wasting blows on air.
27 Je meurtris mon corps au contraire et le traîne en esclavage, de peur qu'après avoir servi dehéraut pour les autres, je ne sois moi-même disqualifié.	27 I punish my body and bring it under control, to avoid any risk that, having acted as herald for others, Imyself may be disqualified.
