1 Ne te félicite pas du lendemain, car tu ignores ce qu'aujourd'hui enfantera.	1 Boast not of tomorrow, for you know not what any day may bring forth.
2 Qu'autrui fasse ton éloge, mais non ta propre bouche, un étranger, mais non tes lèvres!	2 Let another praise you--not your own mouth; Someone else--not your own lips.
3 Lourde est la pierre, pesant le sable, mais plus lourd qu'eux, le dépit du fou.	3 Stone is heavy, and sand a burden, but a fool's provocation is heavier than both.
4 Cruelle est la fureur, impétueuse la colère, mais contre la jalousie, qui tiendra?	4 Anger is relentless, and wrath overwhelming-- but before jealousy who can stand?
5 Mieux vaut réprimande ouverte qu'amour dissimulé.	5 Better is an open rebuke than a love that remains hidden.
6 Fidèles sont les coups d'un ami, mensongers les baisers d'un ennemi.	6 Wounds from a friend may be accepted as well meant, but the greetings of an enemy one prays against.
7 Gorge rassasiée méprise le miel, gorge affamée trouve douce toute amertume.	7 One who is full, tramples on virgin honey; but to the man who is hungry, any bitter thing is sweet.
8 Comme l'oiseau qui erre loin de son nid, ainsi l'homme qui erre loin de son pays.	8 Like a bird that is far from its nest is a man who is far from his home.
9 L'huile et le parfum mettent le coeur en joie, et la douceur de l'amitié, plus que la complaisanceen soi-même.	9 Perfume and incense gladden the heart, but by grief the soul is torn asunder.
10 N'abandonne pas ton ami ni l'ami de ton père; à la maison de ton frère, ne va pas au jour de tonaffliction. Mieux vaut un voisin proche qu'un frère éloigné.	10 Your own friend and your father's friend forsake not; but if ruin befalls you, enter not a kinsman's house. Better is a neighbor near at hand than a brother far away.
11 Deviens sage, mon fils, et réjouis mon coeur, que je puisse répondre à qui m'outrage.	11 If you are wise, my son, you will gladden my heart, and I will be able to rebut him who tuants me.
12 L'homme avisé voit le malheur et se cache, les niais passent outre, à leurs dépens.	12 The shrewd man perceives evil and hides; simpletons continue on and suffer the penalty.
13 Prends-lui son vêtement, car il a cautionné un étranger, à cause d'inconnus, prends-lui un gage.	13 Take his garment who becomes surety for another, and for the sake of a stranger, yield it up!
14 Si quelqu'un bénit son prochain à haute voix dès l'aube, cela lui est compté pour unemalédiction.	14 When one greets his neighbor with a loud voice in the early morning, a curse can be laid to his charge.
15 Gargouille qui ne cesse de couler un jour de pluie et femme querelleuse sont pareilles!	15 For a persistent leak on a rainy day the match is a quarrelsome woman.
16 Qui veut la saisir, saisit le vent et sa droite rencontre de l'huile.	16 He who keeps her stores up a stormwind; he cannot tell north from south.
17 Le fer s'aiguise par le fer, l'homme s'affine en face de son prochain.	17 As iron sharpens iron, so man sharpens his fellow man.
18 Le gardien du figuier mange de son fruit, qui veille sur son maître sera honoré.	18 He who tends a fig tree eats its fruit, and he who is attentive to his master will be enriched.
19 Comme l'eau donne le reflet du visage, ainsi le coeur de l'homme pour l'homme.	19 As one face differs from another, so does one human heart from another.
20 Insatiables sont le Shéol et la Perdition, ainsi les yeux de l'homme sont-ils insatiables.	20 The nether world and the abyss are never satisfied; so too the eyes of men.
21 Il y a la fournaise pour l'argent, le fourneau pour l'or: l'homme vaut ce que vaut sa réputation.	21 As the crucible tests silver and the furnace gold, so a man is tested by the praise he receives.
22 Quand tu pilerais le fou au mortier (parmi les grains, avec un pilon), sa folie ne se sépareraitpas de lui.	22 Though you should pound the fool to bits with the pestle, amid the grits in a mortar, his folly would not go out of him.
23 Connais bien l'état de ton bétail, à ton troupeau donne tes soins;	23 Take good care of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds;
24 car la richesse n'est pas éternelle, et une couronne ne se transmet pas d'âge en âge.	24 For wealth lasts not forever, nor even a crown from age to age.
25 Une fois l'herbe enlevée, le regain apparu, ramassé le foin des montagnes,	25 When the grass is taken away and the aftergrowth appears, and the mountain greens are gathered in,
26 aie des agneaux pour te vêtir, des boucs pour acheter un champ,	26 The lambs will provide you with clothing, and the goats will bring the price of a field,
27 le lait des chèvres en abondance pour te sustenter, pour nourrir ta maison et faire vivre tesservantes.	27 And there will be ample goat's milk to supply you, to supply your household, and maintenance for your maidens.
