1 Deux ans après, il advint que Pharaon eut un songe: il se tenait près du Nil	1 After two years, Pharaoh saw a dream. He thought himself to be standing above a river,
2 et il vit monter du Nil sept vaches de belle apparence et grasses de chair, qui pâturèrent dans lesjoncs.	2 from which ascended seven cows, exceedingly beautiful and stout. And they pastured in marshy places.
3 Mais voici que sept autres vaches montèrent du Nil derrière elles, laides d'apparence et maigres dechair, et elles se rangèrent à côté des premières, sur la rive du Nil.	3 Likewise, another seven emerged from the river, filthy and thoroughly emaciated. And they pastured on the same bank of the river, in green places.
4 Et les vaches laides d'apparence et maigres de chair dévorèrent les sept vaches grasses et bellesd'apparence. Alors Pharaon s'éveilla.	4 And they devoured those whose appearance and condition of body was so wonderful. Pharaoh, having been awakened,
5 Il se rendormit et eut un second songe: sept épis montaient d'une même tige, gros et beaux.	5 slept again, and he saw another dream. Seven ears of grain sprung up on one stalk, full and well-formed.
6 Mais voici que sept épis grêles et brûlés par le vent d'est poussèrent après eux.	6 Likewise, other ears of grain, of the same number, rose up, thin and struck with blight,
7 Et les épis grêles engloutirent les sept épis gros et pleins. Alors Pharaon s'éveilla: voilà que c'étaitun songe!	7 devouring all the beauty of the first. Pharaoh, when he awakened after his rest,
8 Au matin, l'esprit troublé, Pharaon fit appeler tous les magiciens et tous les sages d'Egypte et il leurraconta le songe qu'il avait eu, mais personne ne put l'expliquer à Pharaon.	8 and when morning arrived, being terrified with fear, sent to all the interpreters of Egypt and to all of the wise men. And when they were summoned, he explained to them his dream; but there was no one who could interpret it.
9 Alors, le grand échanson adressa la parole à Pharaon et dit: "Je dois confesser aujourd'hui mesfautes!	9 Then at last the chief cupbearer, remembering, said, “I confess my sin.
10 Pharaon s'était irrité contre ses serviteurs et les avait mis aux arrêts chez le commandant desgardes, moi et le grand panetier.	10 The king, being angry with his servants, ordered me and the chief miller of grain to be forced into the prison of the leader of the military.
11 Nous eûmes un songe, la même nuit, lui et moi, mais la signification du songe était différentepour chacun.	11 There, in one night, both of us saw a dream presaging the future.
12 Il y avait là avec nous un jeune Hébreu, un esclave du commandant des gardes. Nous lui avonsraconté nos songes et il nous les a interprétés: il a interprété le songe de chacun.	12 In that place, there was a Hebrew, a servant of the same commander of the military, to whom we explained our dreams.
13 Et juste comme il nous l'avait expliqué, ainsi arriva-t-il: je fus rétabli dans mon emploi et l'autrefut pendu."	13 Whatever we heard was proven afterwards by the event of the matter. For I was restored to my office, and he was suspended on a cross.”
14 Alors Pharaon fit appeler Joseph, et on l'amena en hâte de la prison. Il se rasa, changea devêtements et se présenta devant Pharaon.	14 Immediately, by the king’s authority, Joseph was led out of prison, and they shaved him. And changing his apparel, they presented him to him.
15 Pharaon dit à Joseph: "J'ai eu un songe et personne ne peut l'interpréter. Mais j'ai entendu dire detoi qu'il te suffit d'entendre un songe pour savoir l'interpréter."	15 And he said to him, “I have seen dreams, and there is no one who can unfold them. I have heard that you are very wise at interpreting these.”
16 Joseph répondit à Pharaon: "Je ne compte pas! C'est Dieu qui donnera à Pharaon une réponsefavorable."	16 Joseph responded, “Apart from me, God will respond favorably to Pharaoh.”
17 Alors Pharaon parla ainsi à Joseph: "Dans mon songe, il me semblait que je me tenais sur la rivedu Nil.	17 Therefore, Pharaoh explained what he had seen: “I thought myself to be standing on the bank of a river,
18 Voici que montèrent du Nil sept vaches grasses de chair et belles d'aspect, qui pâturèrent dans lesjoncs.	18 and seven cows climbed up from the river, exceedingly beautiful and full of flesh. And they grazed in a pasture of a marshy greenery.
19 Mais voici que sept autres vaches montèrent après elles, efflanquées, très laides d'aspect etmaigres de chair, je n'en ai jamais vu d'aussi laides dans tout le pays d'Egypte.	19 And behold, there followed after these, another seven cows, with such deformity and emaciation as I had never seen in the land of Egypt.
20 Les vaches maigres et laides dévorèrent les sept premières, les vaches grasses.	20 These devoured and consumed the first,
21 Et lorsqu'elles les eurent avalées, on ne s'aperçut pas qu'elles les avaient avalées, car leurapparence était aussi laide qu'au début. Là-dessus, je m'éveillai.	21 giving no indication of being full. But they remained in the same state of emaciation and squalor. Awakening, but being weighed down into sleep again,
22 Puis j'ai vu en songe sept épis monter d'une même tige, pleins et beaux.	22 I saw a dream. Seven ears of grain sprang up on one stalk, full and very beautiful.
23 Mais voici que sept épis desséchés, grêles et brûlés par le vent d'est poussèrent après eux.	23 Likewise, another seven, thin and struck with blight, rose up from the stalk.
24 Et les épis grêles engloutirent les sept beaux épis. J'ai dit cela aux magiciens mais il n'y apersonne qui me donne la réponse."	24 And they devoured the beauty of the first. I explained this dream to the interpreters, and there is no one who can unfold it.”
25 Joseph dit à Pharaon: "Le Pharaon n'a fait qu'un seul songe: Dieu a annoncé à Pharaon ce qu'il vaaccomplir.	25 Joseph responded: “The dream of the king is one. What God will do, he has revealed to Pharaoh.
26 Les sept belles vaches représentent sept années, et les sept beaux épis représentent sept années,c'est un seul et même songe.	26 The seven beautiful cows, and the seven full ears of grain, are seven years of abundance. And so the force of the dreams is understood to be the same.
27 Les sept vaches maigres et laides qui montent ensuite représentent sept années et aussi les septépis grêles et brûlés par le vent d'est: c'est qu'il y aura sept années de famine.	27 Likewise, the seven thin and emaciated cows, which ascended after them, and the seven thin ears of grain, which were struck with the burning wind, are seven approaching years of famine.
28 C'est ce que j'ai dit à Pharaon; Dieu a montré à Pharaon ce qu'il va accomplir:	28 These will be fulfilled in this order.
29 voici que viennent sept années où il y aura grande abondance dans tout le pays d'Egypte,	29 Behold, there will arrive seven years of great fertility throughout the entire land of Egypt.
30 puis leur succéderont sept années de famine et on oubliera toute l'abondance dans le paysd'Egypte; la famine épuisera le pays	30 After this, there will follow another seven years, of such great barrenness that all the former abundance will be delivered into oblivion. For the famine will consume all the land,
31 et l'on ne saura plus ce qu'était l'abondance dans le pays, en face de cette famine qui suivra, carelle sera très dure.	31 and the greatness of this destitution will cause the greatness of the abundance to be lost.
32 Et si le songe de Pharaon s'est renouvelé deux fois, c'est que la chose est bien décidée de la partde Dieu et que Dieu a hâte de l'accomplir.	32 Now, as to what you saw the second time, it is a dream pertaining to the same thing. It is an indication of its firmness, because the word of God shall be done, and it shall be completed swiftly.
33 "Maintenant, que Pharaon discerne un homme intelligent et sage et qu'il l'établisse sur le paysd'Egypte.	33 Now therefore, let the king provide a wise and industrious man, and place him over the land of Egypt,
34 Que Pharaon agisse et qu'il institue des fonctionnaires sur le pays; il imposera au cinquième lepays d'Egypte pendant les sept années d'abondance,	34 so that he may appoint overseers throughout all the regions. And let a fifth part of the fruits, throughout the seven fertile years
35 ils ramasseront tous les vivres de ces bonnes années qui viennent, ils emmagasineront le blé sousl'autorité de Pharaon, ils mettront les vivres dans les villes et les y garderont.	35 that now have already begun to occur, be gathered into storehouses. And let all the grain be stored away, under the power of Pharaoh, and let it be kept in the cities.
36 Ces vivres serviront de réserve au pays pour les sept années de famine qui s'abattront sur le paysd'Egypte, et le pays ne sera pas exterminé par la famine."	36 And let it be prepared for the future famine of seven years, which will oppress Egypt, and then the land will not be consumed by destitution.”
37 Le discours plut à Pharaon et à tous ses officiers	37 The counsel pleased Pharaoh and all his ministers.
38 et Pharaon dit à ses officiers: "Trouverons-nous un homme comme celui-ci, en qui soit l'esprit deDieu?"	38 And he said to them, “Would we be able to find another such man, who is full of the Spirit of God?”
39 Alors Pharaon dit à Joseph: "Après que Dieu t'a fait connaître tout cela, il n'y a personned'intelligent et de sage comme toi.	39 Therefore, he said to Joseph: “Because God has revealed to you all that you have said, would I be able to find anyone wiser and as much like you?
40 C'est toi qui seras mon maître du palais et tout mon peuple se conformera à tes ordres, je ne tedépasserai que par le trône."	40 You will be over my house, and to the authority of your mouth, all the people will show obedience. Only in one way, in the throne of the kingdom, will I go before you.”
41 Pharaon dit à Joseph: "Vois: je t'établis sur tout le pays d'Egypte"	41 And again, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have appointed you over the entire land of Egypt.”
42 et Pharaon ôta son anneau de sa main et le mit à la main de Joseph, il le revêtit d'habits de lin finet lui passa au coule collier d'or.	42 And he took the ring from his own hand, and he gave it into his hand. And he clothed him with a robe of fine linen, and he placed a necklace of gold around his neck.
43 Il le fit monter sur le meilleur char qu'il avait après le sien et on criait devant lui "Abrek." Ainsifut-il établi surtout le pays d'Egypte.	43 And he caused him to ascend upon his second swift chariot, with the herald proclaiming that everyone should bend their knee before him, and that they should know that he was governor over the entire land of Egypt.
44 Pharaon dit à Joseph: "Je suis Pharaon, mais sans ta permission personne ne lèvera la main ni lepied dans tout le pays d'Egypte."	44 Likewise, the king said to Joseph: “I am Pharaoh: apart from your authority, no one will move hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”
45 Et Pharaon imposa à Joseph le nom de Cophnat-Panéah et il lui donna pour femme Asnat, fille dePoti-Phéra, prêtre d'On. Et Joseph partit pour le pays d'Egypte.	45 And he changed his name and called him, in the Egyptian tongue: ‘Savior of the world.’ And he gave him as a wife, Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis. And so Joseph went out into the land of Egypt.
46 Joseph avait 30 ans lorsqu'il se présenta devant Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, et Joseph quitta la présencede Pharaon et parcourut tout le pays d'Egypte.	46 (Now he was thirty years old when he stood in the sight of king Pharaoh.) And he traveled throughout the regions of Egypt.
47 Pendant les sept années d'abondance, la terre produisit à profusion	47 And the fertility of the seven years arrived. And when the grain fields were reduced to sheaves, these were gathered into the storehouses of Egypt.
48 et il ramassa tous les vivres des sept années où il y eut abondance au pays d'Egypte et déposa lesvivres dans les villes, mettant dans chaque ville les vivres de la campagne environnante.	48 And now all the abundance of grain was stored away in every city.
49 Joseph emmagasina le blé comme le sable de la mer, en telle quantité qu'on renonça à en faire lecompte, car cela dépassait toute mesure.	49 And there was such a great abundance of wheat that it was comparable to the sands of the sea, and its bounty exceeded all measure.
50 Avant que vînt l'année de la famine, il naquit à Joseph deux fils que lui donna Asnat, fille de Poti-Phéra, prêtre d'On.	50 Then, before the famine arrived, Joseph had two sons born, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, bore for him.
51 Joseph donna à l'aîné le nom de Manassé, "car, dit-il, Dieu m'a fait oublier toute ma peine et toutela famille de mon père."	51 And he called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, saying, “God has caused me to forget all my labors and the house of my father.”
52 Quant au second, il l'appela Ephraïm, "car, dit-il, Dieu m'a rendu fécond au pays de monmalheur."	52 Likewise, he named the second Ephraim, saying, “God has caused me to increase in the land of my poverty.”
53 Alors prirent fin les sept années d'abondance qu'il y eut au pays d'Egypte	53 And so, when the seven years of fertility that occurred in Egypt had passed,
54 et commencèrent à venir les sept années de famine, comme l'avait dit Joseph. Il y avait faminedans tous les pays, mais il y avait du pain dans tout le pays d'Egypte.	54 the seven years of destitution, which Joseph had predicted, began to arrive. And the famine prevailed throughout the whole world, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt.
55 Puis tout le pays d'Egypte souffrit de la faim et le peuple demanda à grands cris du pain àPharaon, mais Pharaon dit à tous les Egyptiens: "Allez à Joseph et faites ce qu'il vous dira" --	55 And being hungry, the people cried out to Pharaoh, asking for provisions. And he said to them: “Go to Joseph. And do whatever he will tell you.”
56 La famine sévissait par toute la terre. -- Alors Joseph ouvrit tous les magasins à blé et vendit dugrain aux Egyptiens. La famine s'aggrava encore au pays d'Egypte.	56 Then the famine increased daily in all the land. And Joseph opened all of the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. For the famine had oppressed them also.
57 De toute la terre on vint en Egypte pour acheter du grain à Joseph, car la famine s'aggravait partoute la terre.	57 And all the provinces came to Egypt, to buy food and to temper the misfortune of their destitution.
