DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
For David himself. Bless the Lord, O my soul: O Lord my God, thou art exceedingly great. Thou hast put on praise and beauty:1 Bless Yahweh, my soul, Yahweh, my God, how great you are! Clothed in majesty and splendour,
and art clothed with light as with a garment. Who stretchest out the heaven like a pavilion:2 wearing the light as a robe! You stretch out the heavens like a tent,
who coverest the higher rooms thereof with water. Who makest the clouds thy chariot: who walkest upon the wings of the winds.3 build your palace on the waters above, making the clouds your chariot, gliding on the wings of thewind,
Who makest thy angels spirits: and thy ministers a burning fire.4 appointing the winds your messengers, flames of fire your servants.
Who hast founded the earth upon its own bases: it shall not be moved for ever and ever.5 You fixed the earth on its foundations, for ever and ever it shal not be shaken;
The deep like a garment is its clothing: above the mountains shall the waters stand.6 you covered it with the deep like a garment, the waters overtopping the mountains.
At thy rebuke they shall flee: at the voice of thy thunder they shall fear.7 At your reproof the waters fled, at the voice of your thunder they sped away,
The mountains ascend, and the plains descend into the place which thou hast founded for them.8 flowing over mountains, down val eys, to the place you had fixed for them;
Thou hast set a bound which they shall not pass over; neither shall they return to cover the earth.9 you made a limit they were not to cross, they were not to return and cover the earth.
Thou sendest forth springs in the vales: between the midst of the hills the waters shall pass.10 In the ravines you opened up springs, running down between the mountains,
All the beasts of the field shall drink: the wild asses shall expect in their thirst.11 supplying water for al the wild beasts; the wild asses quench their thirst,
Over them the birds of the air shall dwell: from the midst of the rocks they shall give forth their voices.12 on their banks the birds of the air make their nests, they sing among the leaves.
Thou waterest the hills from thy upper rooms: the earth shall be filled with the fruit of thy works:13 From your high hal s you water the mountains, satisfying the earth with the fruit of your works:
Bringing forth grass for cattle, and herb for the service of men. That thou mayst bring bread out of the earth:14 for cattle you make the grass grow, and for people the plants they need, to bring forth food from theearth,
and that wine may cheer the heart of man. That he may make the face cheerful with oil: and that bread may strengthen man's heart.15 and wine to cheer people's hearts, oil to make their faces glow, food to make them sturdy of heart.
The trees of the field shall be filled, and the cedars of Libanus which he hath planted:16 The trees of Yahweh drink their fill, the cedars of Lebanon which he sowed;
there the sparrows shall make their nests. The highest of them is the house of the heron.17 there the birds build their nests, on the highest branches the stork makes its home;
The high hills are a refuge for the harts, the rock for the irchins.18 for the wild goats there are the mountains, in the crags the coneys find refuge.
He hath made the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down.19 He made the moon to mark the seasons, the sun knows when to set.
Thou hast appointed darkness, and it is night: in it shall all the beasts of the woods go about:20 You bring on darkness, and night fal s, when al the forest beasts roam around;
The young lions roaring after their prey, and seeking their meat from God.21 young lions roar for their prey, asking God for their food.
The sun ariseth, and they are gathered together: and they shall lie down in their dens.22 The sun rises and away they steal, back to their lairs to lie down,
Man shall go forth to his work, and to his labour until the evening.23 and man goes out to work, to labour til evening falls.
How great are thy works, O Lord? thou hast made all things in wisdom: the earth is filled with thy riches.24 How countless are your works, Yahweh, al of them made so wisely! The earth is ful of yourcreatures.
So is this great sea, which stretcheth wide its arms: there are creeping things without number: Creatures little and great.25 Then there is the sea, with its vast expanses teeming with countless creatures, creatures both greatand smal ;
There the ships shall go. This sea dragon which thou hast formed to play therein.26 there ships pass to and fro, and Leviathan whom you made to sport with.
All expect of thee that thou give them food in season.27 They al depend upon you, to feed them when they need it.
What thou givest to them they shall gather up: when thou openest thy hand, they shall all be filled with good.28 You provide the food they gather, your open hand gives them their fil .
But if thou turnest away thy face, they shall be troubled: thou shalt take away their breath, and they shall fail, and shall return to their dust.29 Turn away your face and they panic; take back their breath and they die and revert to dust.
Thou shalt send forth thy spirit, and they shall be created: and thou shalt renew the face of the earth.30 Send out your breath and life begins; you renew the face of the earth.
May the glory of the Lord endure for ever: the Lord shall rejoice in his works.31 Glory to Yahweh for ever! May Yahweh find joy in his creatures!
He looketh upon the earth, and maketh it tremble: he toucheth the mountains, and they smoke.32 At his glance the earth trembles, at his touch the mountains pour forth smoke.
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.33 I shal sing to Yahweh al my life, make music for my God as long as I live.
Let my speech be acceptable to him: but I will take delight in the Lord.34 May my musings be pleasing to him, for Yahweh gives me joy.
Let sinners be consumed out of the earth, and the unjust, so that they be no more: O my soul, bless thou the Lord.35 May sinners vanish from the earth, and the wicked exist no more! Bless Yahweh, my soul.
