DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
For David himself. Bless the Lord, O my soul: O Lord my God, thou art exceedingly great. Thou hast put on praise and beauty:1 Bless the LORD, my soul! LORD, my God, you are great indeed! You are clothed with majesty and glory,
and art clothed with light as with a garment. Who stretchest out the heaven like a pavilion:2 robed in light as with a cloak. You spread out the heavens like a tent;
who coverest the higher rooms thereof with water. Who makest the clouds thy chariot: who walkest upon the wings of the winds.3 you raised your palace upon the waters. You make the clouds your chariot; you travel on the wings of the wind.
Who makest thy angels spirits: and thy ministers a burning fire.4 You make the winds your messengers; flaming fire, your ministers.
Who hast founded the earth upon its own bases: it shall not be moved for ever and ever.5 You fixed the earth on its foundation, never to be moved.
The deep like a garment is its clothing: above the mountains shall the waters stand.6 The ocean covered it like a garment; above the mountains stood the waters.
At thy rebuke they shall flee: at the voice of thy thunder they shall fear.7 At your roar they took flight; at the sound of your thunder they fled.
The mountains ascend, and the plains descend into the place which thou hast founded for them.8 They rushed up the mountains, down the valleys to the place you had fixed for them.
Thou hast set a bound which they shall not pass over; neither shall they return to cover the earth.9 You set a limit they cannot pass; never again will they cover the earth.
Thou sendest forth springs in the vales: between the midst of the hills the waters shall pass.10 You made springs flow into channels that wind among the mountains.
All the beasts of the field shall drink: the wild asses shall expect in their thirst.11 They give drink to every beast of the field; here wild asses quench their thirst.
Over them the birds of the air shall dwell: from the midst of the rocks they shall give forth their voices.12 Beside them the birds of heaven nest; among the branches they sing.
Thou waterest the hills from thy upper rooms: the earth shall be filled with the fruit of thy works:13 You water the mountains from your palace; by your labor the earth abounds.
Bringing forth grass for cattle, and herb for the service of men. That thou mayst bring bread out of the earth:14 You raise grass for the cattle and plants for our beasts of burden. You bring bread from the earth,
and that wine may cheer the heart of man. That he may make the face cheerful with oil: and that bread may strengthen man's heart.15 and wine to gladden our hearts, Oil to make our faces gleam, food to build our strength.
The trees of the field shall be filled, and the cedars of Libanus which he hath planted:16 The trees of the LORD drink their fill, the cedars of Lebanon, which you planted.
there the sparrows shall make their nests. The highest of them is the house of the heron.17 There the birds build their nests; junipers are the home of the stork.
The high hills are a refuge for the harts, the rock for the irchins.18 The high mountains are for wild goats; the rocky cliffs, a refuge for badgers.
He hath made the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down.19 You made the moon to mark the seasons, the sun that knows the hour of its setting.
Thou hast appointed darkness, and it is night: in it shall all the beasts of the woods go about:20 You bring darkness and night falls, then all the beasts of the forest roam abroad.
The young lions roaring after their prey, and seeking their meat from God.21 Young lions roar for prey; they seek their food from God.
The sun ariseth, and they are gathered together: and they shall lie down in their dens.22 When the sun rises, they steal away and rest in their dens.
Man shall go forth to his work, and to his labour until the evening.23 People go forth to their work, to their labor till evening falls.
How great are thy works, O Lord? thou hast made all things in wisdom: the earth is filled with thy riches.24 How varied are your works, LORD! In wisdom you have wrought them all; the earth is full of your creatures.
So is this great sea, which stretcheth wide its arms: there are creeping things without number: Creatures little and great.25 Look at the sea, great and wide! It teems with countless beings, living things both large and small.
There the ships shall go. This sea dragon which thou hast formed to play therein.26 Here ships ply their course; here Leviathan, your creature, plays.
All expect of thee that thou give them food in season.27 All of these look to you to give them food in due time.
What thou givest to them they shall gather up: when thou openest thy hand, they shall all be filled with good.28 When you give to them, they gather; when you open your hand, they are well filled.
But if thou turnest away thy face, they shall be troubled: thou shalt take away their breath, and they shall fail, and shall return to their dust.29 When you hide your face, they are lost. When you take away their breath, they perish and return to the dust from which they came.
Thou shalt send forth thy spirit, and they shall be created: and thou shalt renew the face of the earth.30 When you send forth your breath, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.
May the glory of the Lord endure for ever: the Lord shall rejoice in his works.31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD be glad in these works!
He looketh upon the earth, and maketh it tremble: he toucheth the mountains, and they smoke.32 If God glares at the earth, it trembles; if God touches the mountains, they smoke!
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.33 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God while I live.
Let my speech be acceptable to him: but I will take delight in the Lord.34 May my theme be pleasing to God; I will rejoice in the LORD.
Let sinners be consumed out of the earth, and the unjust, so that they be no more: O my soul, bless thou the Lord.35 May sinners vanish from the earth, and the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, my soul! Hallelujah!
