| 1 Recherchez (avec ardeur) la charité, aspirez aux dons spirituels, et surtout à prophétiser. | 1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. |
| 2 En effet, celui qui parle une langue (inconnue), ne parle pas aux hommes, mais à Dieu ; car personne ne l'entend, et c'est en esprit qu'il profère des mystères. | 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. |
| 3 Mais celui qui prophétise parle aux hommes pour les édifier, les exhorter et les consoler. | 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. |
| 4 Celui qui parle une langue s'édifie lui-même ; mais celui qui prophétise édifie l'Eglise de Dieu. | 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. |
| 5 Or je veux (voudrais) que vous parliez (puissiez parler) tous les langues, mais encore plus que vous prophétisiez ; car celui qui prophétise est plus grand que celui qui parle les langues, à moins qu'il n'interprète, afin que l'Eglise en reçoive de l'édification. | 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. |
| 6 Aussi, mes frères, si je venais à vous parlant les langues, de quelle utilité vous serais-je, à moins que je ne vous parle ou par révélation, ou par connaissance, ou par prophétie, ou par doctrine ? | 6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? |
| 7 Si les choses inanimées (quoique) qui rendent un son, comme la flûte et la harpe, ne rendent pas des sons distincts, comment saura-t-on ce qui est joué sur la flûte ou sur la harpe ? | 7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? |
| 8 En effet, si la trompette rend un son confus, qui se préparera au combat ? | 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? |
| 9 Vous de même, si par la langue vous ne donnez pas un langage distinct, comment saura-t-on ce que vous dites ? Car vous parlerez en l'air. | 9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. |
| 10 Il y a, en effet, tant d'espèces de langues dans ce monde, et il n'y en a aucune qui n'ait sa signification. | 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. |
| 11 Si donc je ne connais pas le sens des paroles, je serai un barbare pour celui à qui je parle, et celui qui parle sera un barbare pour moi. | 11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me. |
| 12 Ainsi vous-mêmes, puisque vous désirez avec ardeur les dons spirituels, cherchez pour l'édification de l'Eglise à en posséder abondamment. | 12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. |
| 13 C'est pourquoi, que celui qui parle une langue prie, afin de l'interpréter. | 13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. |
| 14 Car si je prie dans une langue (inconnue), mon esprit est en prière, mais mon intelligence est sans fruit. | 14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. |
| 15 Que ferai-je donc ? Je prierai par l'esprit, mais je prierai aussi avec l'intelligence ; je chanterai par l'esprit (des cantiques), mais je chanterai aussi avec l'intelligence. | 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. |
| 16 Autrement, si tu ne bénis Dieu que par l'esprit, comment celui qui tient la place du simple peuple répondra-t-il Amen à ta bénédiction, puisqu'il ne sait pas ce que tu dis ? | 16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? |
| 17 Tu rends, il est vrai, une bonne action de grâces ; mais les autres n'en sont pas édifiés. | 17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. |
| 18 Je rends grâces à mon Dieu de ce que je parle les langues de vous tous ; | 18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: |
| 19 mais j'aime mieux dire dans l'Eglise cinq paroles avec mon intelligence, pour instruire aussi les autres, que dix mille paroles en une langue (inconnue). | 19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. |
| 20 Mes frères, ne devenez pas des enfants sous le rapport du jugement (par l'intelligence), mais soyez de petits enfants pour la malice, et, pour ce qui concerne le jugement (en intelligence), soyez des hommes parfaits. | 20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men. |
| 21 Il est écrit dans la loi : Je parlerai à ce peuple en d'autres langues et avec des lèvres étrangères, et même ainsi ils ne m'écouteront (même) pas, dit le Seigneur. | 21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. |
| 22 Par conséquent, les langues sont un signe, non pour les fidèles, mais pour les infidèles ; et les prophéties, au contraire, ne sont pas pour les infidèles, mais pour les fidèles. | 22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. |
| 23 Si donc l'Eglise entière est réunie dans un seul lieu, et que tous parlent des langues, et qu'il entre des hommes du peuple ou des infidèles, ne diront-ils pas que vous êtes fous ? | 23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? |
| 24 Mais si tous prophétisent, et qu'il entre un infidèle ou un homme du peuple, il est convaincu par tous, il est jugé par tous, | 24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: |
| 25 les secrets de son cœur sont dévoilés ; de sorte que, tombant sur sa face, il adorera Dieu, déclarant que Dieu est vraiment parmi vous. | 25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. |
| 26 Que faire donc, mes frères ? Si lorsque (Que quand) vous êtes assemblés, vous avez, l'un un cantique, l'autre une instruction, l'autre une révélation, l'autre une langue, l'autre une interprétation : que tout se fasse pour l'édification. | 26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, everyone of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. |
| 27 S'il y en a qui parlent des langues, que deux ou trois au plus parlent, et l'un après l'autre ; et que quelqu'un interprète. | 27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. |
| 28 S'il n'y a pas d'interprète, qu'on se taise dans l'Eglise, qu'on (il) parle à soi-même (lui-même) et à Dieu. | 28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. |
| 29 Quant aux prophètes, que deux ou trois parlent, et que les autres jugent. | 29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. |
| 30 Si un autre de ceux qui sont assis reçoit une révélation, que le premier se taise. | 30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. |
| 31 Car vous pouvez tous prophétiser l'un après l'autre, afin que tous apprennent et que tous soient exhortés. | 31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. |
| 32 Les esprits des prophètes sont soumis aux prophètes ; | 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. |
| 33 car Dieu n'est pas un Dieu de désordre, mais de paix, comme je l'enseigne dans toutes les Eglises des saints. | 33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. |
| 34 Que les femmes se taisent dans les Eglises, car il ne leur est pas permis de parler ; mais qu'elles soient soumises, comme le dit aussi la loi. | 34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. |
| 35 Si elles veulent s'instruire sur quelque chose, qu'elles interrogent leurs maris à la maison ; car il est honteux pour une femme de parler dans l'Eglise. | 35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. |
| 36 Est-ce de vous que la parole de Dieu est sortie ? ou n'est-elle parvenue qu'à vous seuls ? | 36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? |
| 37 Si quelqu'un croit être prophète ou spirituel, qu'il reconnaisse que les choses que je vous écris sont des commandements du Seigneur. | 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. |
| 38 Si quelqu'un (veut) l'ignorer, il sera ignoré. | 38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. |
| 39 Ainsi donc, frères, aspirez à prophétiser, et n'empêchez pas de parler des langues ; | 39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. |
| 40 mais que tout se fasse décemment et avec ordre. | 40 Let all things be done decently and in order. |
