| 1 Après cela, Jésus parcourait la Galilée ; car il ne voulait pas aller en Judée, parce que les Juifs cherchaient à le faire mourir. | 1 After this, Jesus moved about within Galilee; but he did not wish to travel in Judea, because the Jews were trying to kill him. |
| 2 Or la fête des Juifs, dite des Tabernacles (la Scénopégies, note), était proche. | 2 But the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near. |
| 3 Et ses frères lui dirent : Pars d'ici, et va en Judée, afin que tes disciples voient aussi lesœuvres que tu fais. | 3 So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. |
| 4 Car personne n'agit en secret, lorsqu'il cherche à paraître ; si tu fais ces choses, manifeste-toi au monde. | 4 No one works in secret if he wants to be known publicly. If you do these things, manifest yourself to the world." |
| 5 Car ses frères non plus ne croyaient pas en lui. | 5 For his brothers did not believe in him. |
| 6 Jésus leur dit donc : Mon temps n'est pas encore venu ; mais votre temps à vous est toujours prêt. | 6 So Jesus said to them, "My time is not yet here, but the time is always right for you. |
| 7 Le monde ne peut vous haïr ; mais moi, il me hait, parce que je rends de lui le témoignage que ses œuvres sont mauvaises. | 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I testify to it that its works are evil. |
| 8 Vous, montez à cette fête ; pour moi, je ne monte pas à cette fête, parce que mon temps n'est pas encore accompli. | 8 You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, because my time has not yet been fulfilled." |
| 9 Aprés avoir dit cela, il demeura en Galilée. | 9 After he had said this, he stayed on in Galilee. |
| 10 Mais, lorsque ses frères furent partis, il monta, lui aussi, à la fête, non pas publiquement, mais comme en secret. | 10 But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, he himself also went up, not openly but (as it were) in secret. |
| 11 Les Juifs le cherchaient donc pendant la fête, et disaient : Où est-il ? | 11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast and saying, "Where is he?" |
| 12 Et il y avait une grande rumeur dans la foule à son sujet. Car les uns disaient : C'est un homme de bien ; les autres disaient : Non, mais il séduit les foules. | 12 And there was considerable murmuring about him in the crowds. Some said, "He is a good man," (while) others said, "No; on the contrary, he misleads the crowd." |
| 13 Cependant personne ne parlait de lui publiquement, par crainte des Juifs. | 13 Still, no one spoke openly about him because they were afraid of the Jews. |
| 14 Or, vers le milieu de la fête, Jésus monta au temple, et il enseignait. | 14 When the feast was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple area and began to teach. |
| 15 Et les Juifs s'étonnaient, disant : Comment connaît-il les lettres (Ecritures), lui qui n'a pas étudié ? | 15 The Jews were amazed and said, "How does he know scripture without having studied?" |
| 16 Jésus leur répondit : Ma doctrine n'est pas de moi, mais de celui qui m'a envoyé. | 16 Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not my own but is from the one who sent me. |
| 17 Si quelqu'un veut faire la volonté de Dieu, il saura, au sujet de ma doctrine, si elle est de Dieu, ou si je parle de moi-même. | 17 Whoever chooses to do his will shall know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speak on my own. |
| 18 Celui qui parle de lui-même cherche sa propre gloire ; mais celui qui cherche la gloire de celui qui l'a envoyé est véridique, et il n'y a pas d'injustice en lui. | 18 Whoever speaks on his own seeks his own glory, but whoever seeks the glory of the one who sent him is truthful, and there is no wrong in him. |
| 19 Moïse ne vous a-t-il pas donné la loi ? Et aucun de vous n'accomplit la loi. | 19 Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?" |
| 20 Pourquoi cherchez-vous à me faire mourir ? La foule répondit : Vous êtes possédé du démon ; qui est-ce qui cherche à vous faire mourir ? | 20 The crowd answered, "You are possessed! Who is trying to kill you?" |
| 21 Jésus leur répliqua et dit : J'ai fait uneœuvre, et vous en êtes tous étonnés. | 21 Jesus answered and said to them, "I performed one work and all of you are amazed |
| 22 Cependant Moïse vous a donné la circoncision (quoiqu'elle ne vienne pas de Moïse, mais des patriarches), et vous pratiquez la circoncision le jour du sabbat. | 22 because of it. Moses gave you circumcision--not that it came from Moses but rather from the patriarchs--and you circumcise a man on the sabbath. |
| 23 Si un homme reçoit la circoncision le jour du sabbat, afin que la loi de Moïse ne soit pas violée, pourquoi vous irritez-vous contre moi, parce que j'ai guéri un homme tout entier le jour du sabbat ? | 23 If a man can receive circumcision on a sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a whole person well on a sabbath? |
| 24 Ne jugez pas selon l'apparence, mais jugez selon la justice. | 24 Stop judging by appearances, but judge justly." |
| 25 Quelques-uns, qui étaient de Jérusalem, disaient : N'est-ce pas là celui qu'ils cherchent à faire mourir ? | 25 So some of the inhabitants of Jerusalem said, "Is he not the one they are trying to kill? |
| 26 Et voilà qu'il parle publiquement, et ils ne lui disent rien. Est-ce que vraiment les autorités ont reconnu qu'il est le Christ ? | 26 And look, he is speaking openly and they say nothing to him. Could the authorities have realized that he is the Messiah? |
| 27 Mais Celui-ci, nous savons d'où il est ; or, quand le Christ viendra, personne ne saura d'où il est. | 27 But we know where he is from. When the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from." |
| 28 Jésus criait donc dans le temple, enseignant et disant : Vous me connaissez, et vous savez d'où je suis. Je ne suis pas venu de moi-même ; mais celui qui m'a envoyé est véritable, et vous ne le connaissez pas. | 28 So Jesus cried out in the temple area as he was teaching and said, "You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true. |
| 29 Moi, je le connais, parce que je viens de lui, et que c'est lui qui m'a envoyé. | 29 I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me." |
| 30 Ils cherchaient donc à l'arrêter ; et personne ne mit la main sur lui, parce que son heure n'était pas encore venue. | 30 So they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come. |
| 31 Mais, parmi la foule, beaucoup crurent en lui ; et ils disaient : Le Christ, lorsqu'il viendra, fera-t-il plus de miracles que n'en fait celui-ci ? | 31 But many of the crowd began to believe in him, and said, "When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man has done?" |
| 32 Les pharisiens entendirent la foule murmurer ces choses à son sujet ; et de concert avec les chefs, ils envoyèrent des agents (archers) pour l'arrêter. | 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring about him to this effect, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent guards to arrest him. |
| 33 Jésus leur dit donc : Je suis encore avec vous pour un peu de temps, puis je m'en vais à celui qui m'a envoyé. | 33 So Jesus said, "I will be with you only a little while longer, and then I will go to the one who sent me. |
| 34 Vous me chercherez, et vous ne me trouverez pas ; et là où je serai, vous ne pouvez venir. | 34 You will look for me but not find (me), and where I am you cannot come." |
| 35 Les Juifs dirent donc entre eux : Où ira-t-il, que nous ne le trouverons pas ? Ira-t-il vers ceux qui sont dispersés parmi les gentils, et instruira-t-il les gentils ? | 35 So the Jews said to one another, "Where is he going that we will not find him? Surely he is not going to the dispersion among the Greeks to teach the Greeks, is he? |
| 36 Que signifie cette parole qu'il a dite : Vous me chercherez, et vous ne me trouverez pas, et là où je serai, vous ne pouvez venir ? | 36 What is the meaning of his saying, 'You will look for me and not find (me), and where I am you cannot come'?" |
| 37 Le dernier jour, qui est le plus grand de la fête, Jésus se tenait debout, et criait, en disant : Si quelqu'un a soif, qu'il vienne à moi, et qu'il boive. | 37 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and exclaimed, "Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. |
| 38 Celui qui croit en moi, des fleuves d'eau vive couleront de son sein, comme dit l'Ecriture. | 38 Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: 'Rivers of living water will flow from within him.'" |
| 39 Il dit cela de l'Esprit que devaient recevoir ceux qui croyaient en lui ; car l'Esprit n'avait pas encore été donné, parce que Jésus n'était pas encore glorifié. | 39 He said this in reference to the Spirit that those who came to believe in him were to receive. There was, of course, no Spirit yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. |
| 40 Plusieurs donc, parmi la foule, ayant entendu ces paroles, disaient : Celui-ci est vraiment le prophète. | 40 Some in the crowd who heard these words said, "This is truly the Prophet." |
| 41 D'autres disaient : C'est le Christ. Mais quelques autres disaient : Est-ce que le Christ viendra de Galilée ? | 41 Others said, "This is the Messiah." But others said, "The Messiah will not come from Galilee, will he? |
| 42 L'Ecriture ne dit-elle pas que le Christ viendra de la race de David, et du bourg de Bethléem, où était David ? | 42 Does not scripture say that the Messiah will be of David's family and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?" |
| 43 Il y eut donc division dans la foule à son sujet. | 43 So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. |
| 44 Quelques-uns d'entre eux voulaient l'arrêter, mais personne ne mit la main sur lui. | 44 Some of them even wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. |
| 45 Les agents (archers) retournèrent donc vers les princes des prêtres et les pharisiens. Et ceux-ci leur dirent : Pourquoi ne l'avez-vous pas amené ? | 45 So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why did you not bring him?" |
| 46 Les agents répondirent : Jamais homme n'a parlé comme cet homme. | 46 The guards answered, "Never before has anyone spoken like this one." |
| 47 Les pharisiens leur répliquèrent : Est-ce que vous avez été séduits, vous aussi ? | 47 So the Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived? |
| 48 Y a-t-il quelqu'un des chefs ou des pharisiens qui ait cru en lui ? | 48 Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? |
| 49 Mais cette foule qui ne connaît pas la loi, ce sont des maudits. | 49 But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed." |
| 50 Nicodème, celui qui était venu trouver Jésus la nuit, et qui était l'un d'entre eux, leur dit : | 50 Nicodemus, one of their members who had come to him earlier, said to them, |
| 51 Notre loi condamne-t-elle un homme sans qu'on l'entende d'abord, et sans qu'on sache ce qu'il a fait ? | 51 "Does our law condemn a person before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?" |
| 52 Ils lui répondirent : Es-tu Galiléen, toi aussi ? Scrute les Ecritures, et tu verras que de la Galilée il ne sort pas de prophète. | 52 They answered and said to him, "You are not from Galilee also, are you? Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee." |
| 53 Et ils s'en retournèrent chacun dans sa maison. | 53 Then each went to his own house, |
