| 2 Qui me donnera d'être comme au temps d'autrefois, comme aux jours où Dieu me gardait ? | 2 Who will grant me, that I might be according to the months past, according to the days in which God kept me? |
| 3 Lorsque sa lampe luisait sur ma tête, et qu'à sa lumière je marchais dans les ténèbres ; | 3 When his lamp shined over my head, and I walked by his light in darkness? |
| 4 comme j'étais aux jours de ma jeunesse, lorsque Dieu habitait en secret dans ma tente (tabernacle) ; | 4 As I was in the days of my youth, when God was secretly in my tabernacle? |
| 5 lorsque le Tout-Puissant était avec moi, et mes enfants (serviteurs) autour de moi ; | 5 When the Almighty was with me: and my servants round about me? |
| 6 lorsque je lavais mes pieds dans le lait caillé (beurre), et que (une) la pierre répandait pour moi des ruisseaux d'huile ; | 6 When I washed my feet with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil? |
| 7 lorsque je m'avançais vers la porte de la ville, et que l'on me préparait un siège dans la place publique ? | 7 When I went out to the gate of the city, and in the street they prepared me a chair? |
| 8 Les jeunes gens me voyaient et se cachaient (retiraient à l'écart) ; et les vieillards, se levant, demeuraient debout. | 8 The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the old men rose up and stood. |
| 9 Les princes cessaient de parler, et ils mettaient le doigt sur leur bouche. | 9 The princes ceased to speak, and laid the finger on their mouth. |
| 10 Les chefs (grands) retenaient leur voix, et leur langue demeurait attachée à leur palais. | 10 The rulers held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to their throat. |
| 11 L'oreille qui m'écoutait me proclamait bienheureux, et l'œil qui me voyait me rendait témoignage, | 11 The ear that heard me blessed me, and the eye that saw me gave witness to me: |
| 12 parce que j'avais délivré le pauvre qui criait, et l'orphelin privé de secours. | 12 Because I had delivered the poor man that cried out; and the fatherless that had no helper. |
| 13 La bénédiction de celui qui allait périr venait sur moi, et je consolais le cœur de la veuve. | 13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me, and I comforted the heart of the widow. |
| 14 Je me suis revêtu de la justice, et l'équité (de jugements) me servit (m'a servi) comme d'un manteau (de vêtement) et d'un diadème. | 14 I was clad with justice: and I clothed myself with my judgment, as with a robe and a diadem. |
| 15 J'ai été l'œil de l'aveugle, et le pied du boiteux. | 15 I was an eye to the blind, and a foot to the lame. |
| 16 J'étais le père des pauvres, et j'examinais avec un soin extrême l'affaire que je ne connaissais pas. | 16 I was the father of the poor: and the cause which I knew not, I searched out most diligently. |
| 17 Je brisais les mâchoires de l'injuste, et je lui arrachais sa proie d'entre les dents. | 17 I broke the jaws of the wicked man, and out of his teeth I took away the prey. |
| 18 Je disais : Je mourrai dans mon (petit) nid, et je multiplierai mes jours comme le palmier. | 18 And I said: I shall die in my nest, and as a palm tree shall multiply my days. |
| 19 Ma racine s'étend le long des eaux, et la rosée se reposera sur mes branches (ma moisson). | 19 My root is opened beside the waters, and dew shall continue in my harvest. |
| 20 Ma gloire se renouvellera sans cesse, et mon arc se fortifiera dans ma main. | 20 My glory shall always be renewed, and my bow in my hand shall be repaired. |
| 21 Ceux qui m'écoutaient attendaient mon avis (sentiment), et ils se taisaient, attentifs à mon sentiment (avis). | 21 They that heard me, waited for my sentence, and being attentive held their peace at my counsel. |
| 22 Ils n'osaient rien ajouter à mes paroles, et elles tombaient sur eux comme la rosée. | 22 To my words they durst add nothing, and my speech dropped upon them. |
| 23 Ils me désiraient comme la pluie, et leur bouche s'ouvrait comme aux ondées de l'arrière-saison. | 23 They waited for me as for rain, and they opened their mouth as for a latter shower. |
| 24 Si parfois je leur souriais, ils ne pouvaient le croire, et la lumière de mon visage ne tombait pas à terre. | 24 If at any time I laughed on them, they believed not, and the light of my countenance fell not on earth. |
| 25 Quand (Si) je voulais aller parmi eux, je prenais la première place ; et lorsque j'étais assis comme un roi au milieu de ses gardes, je ne laissais pas d'être le consolateur des affligés. | 25 If I had a mind to go to them, I sat first, and when I sat as a king, with his army standing about him, yet I was a comforter of them that mourned. |
