| 1 Longtemps après, le Seigneur adressa la parole à Elie, durant la troisième année, et il lui dit : Va, présente-toi devant Achab, afin que je fasse tomber la pluie sur la terre. | 1 After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go and show yourself to Ahab, so that I may grant rain upon the face of the earth.” |
| 2 Elie s'en alla donc pour se présenter devant Achab. Cependant la famine était extrême dans Samarie ; | 2 Therefore, Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. For there was a severe famine in Samaria. |
| 3 et Achab fit venir Abdias, intendant de sa maison. Or Abdias craignait beaucoup le Seigneur ; | 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, the manager of his household. Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly. |
| 4 car, lorsque Jézabel faisait mourir les prophètes du Seigneur, il en prit cent qu'il cacha dans des cavernes, cinquante par cinquante, et il les nourrit de pain et d'eau. | 4 For when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord, he took one hundred prophets, and concealed them, fifty and fifty, in caves. And he fed them with bread and water. |
| 5 Achab dit donc à Abdias : Va par le pays, à toutes les fontaines (sources d'eaux) et à toutes les vallées, pour voir si nous pourrons trouver de l'herbe, afin de sauver les chevaux et les mulets, et que toutes les bêtes ne meurent pas (entièrement). | 5 Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go into the land, to all fountains of water, and to all the valleys, for perhaps we will be able to find plants, and save the horses and mules, so that the beasts of burden may not perish entirely.” |
| 6 Ils se partagèrent donc le pays pour aller chercher de tous côtés. Achab allait par un chemin, et Abdias séparément allait par un autre. | 6 And they divided the regions among themselves, so that they might travel through them. Ahab went one way alone, and Obadiah went another way by himself. |
| 7 Et tandis qu'Abdias était en route, Elie vint au-devant de lui. Abdias, l'ayant reconnu, se prosterna le visage contre terre, et lui dit : Est-ce vous, Elie, mon seigneur ? | 7 And while Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him. And when he had recognized him, he fell on his face, and he said, “Are you not my lord Elijah?” |
| 8 Il lui répondit : C'est moi. Va, et dis à ton maître : Voici Elie (est là). | 8 And he responded to him: “I am. Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.” |
| 9 Quel péché ai-je commis, dit Abdias, pour que vous me livriez entre les mains d'Achab, moi, votre serviteur, afin qu'il me fasse mourir ? | 9 And he said: “How have I sinned that you would deliver me, your servant, into the hand of Ahab, so that he would put me to death? |
| 10 Vive le Seigneur votre Dieu (vit !), il n'y a point de nation ni de royaume où mon seigneur n'ait envoyé vous chercher ; et, tous lui disant que vous n'y étiez pas, il a adjuré les rois et les peuples, parce qu'on ne vous trouvait point. | 10 As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom to which my lord has not sent, seeking you. And when all responded, ‘He is not here,’ he swore each kingdom and nation to an oath, because you were not found at all. |
| 11 Et maintenant vous me dites : Va, et dis à ton maître : voici Elie (est là). | 11 And now, you say to me, ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.’ |
| 12 Et après que je vous aurai quitté, l'esprit du Seigneur vous transportera en quelque lieu qui me sera inconnu ; et quand j'aurai averti Achab, s'il ne vous trouve pas, il me fera mourir. Cependant (Or) votre serviteur craint le Seigneur depuis son enfance. | 12 And when I will have departed from you, the Spirit of the Lord will transport you to a place that I do not know. And entering, I will report to Ahab. And he, not finding you, will put me to death. Yet your servant has feared the Lord from his infancy. |
| 13 Ne vous a-t-on pas dit, à vous mon seigneur, ce que je fis lorsque Jézabel tuait les prophètes du Seigneur, et que je cachai cent de ces prophètes dans des cavernes, cinquante par cinquante, et que je les nourris de pain et d'eau ? | 13 Has it not been revealed to you, my lord, what I did when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord: how I hid one hundred men from the prophets of the Lord, fifty and fifty, in caves, and how I fed them with bread and water? |
| 14 Et après cela, vous me dites : Va, et dis à ton maître : Voici Elie (est là) ; afin qu'il me tue ! | 14 And now you say: ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here,’ so that he may kill me!” |
| 15 Elie lui dit : Vive (Il vit) le Seigneur des armées, en la présence duquel je suis ; je me présenterai aujourd'hui devant Achab. | 15 And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whose face I stand, this day I will appear to him.” |
| 16 Abdias alla donc trouver Achab, et lui fit son rapport ; et Achab vint (aussitôt) au devant d'Elie. | 16 Therefore, Obadiah went away to meet Ahab, and he reported to him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah. |
| 17 Et le voyant, il lui dit : N'es-tu pas celui qui trouble Israël ? | 17 And when he had seen him, he said, “Are you the one who is disturbing Israel?” |
| 18 Elie lui répondit : Ce n'est pas moi qui ai troublé Israël, mais c'est vous-même et la maison de votre père, parce que vous avez abandonné les commandements du Seigneur, et que vous avez suivi Baal. | 18 And he said: “I have not troubled Israel. But it is you, and the house of your father, who have abandoned the commandments of the Lord, and have followed the Baals. |
| 19 Néanmoins envoyez maintenant vers Israël, et faites assembler tout le peuple sur le mont Carmel, et les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal, avec les quatre cents prophètes des bois sacrés, que Jézabel nourrit de sa table. | 19 Yet truly now, send and gather to me all of Israel, on Mount Carmel, with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of the sacred groves, who eat from the table of Jezebel.” |
| 20 Achab envoya donc avertir tous les fils d'Israël, et il assembla les prophètes sur le mont Carmel. | 20 Ahab sent to all the sons of Israel, and he gathered together the prophets on mount Carmel. |
| 21 Alors Elie s'approcha de tout le peuple, et dit : Jusqu'à quand serez-vous comme un homme qui boite des deux côtés ? Si le Seigneur est Dieu, suivez-le ; si Baal est Dieu, suivez-le aussi. Et le peuple ne lui répondit pas un (seul) mot. | 21 Then Elijah, drawing near to all the people, said: “How long will you waver between two sides? If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal is, then follow him.” And the people did not respond a word to him. |
| 22 Elie dit encore au peuple : Je suis demeuré seul d'entre les prophètes du Seigneur ; tandis que les prophètes de Baal sont au nombre de quatre cent cinquante. | 22 And Elijah said again to the people: “I alone remain as a prophet of the Lord. But the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men. |
| 23 Qu'on nous donne deux bœufs ; et qu'ils en choisissent un pour eux, et que, l'ayant coupé par morceaux, ils le placent sur le bois sans mettre de feu par-dessous, et moi je prendrai (sacrifierai) l'autre bœuf, et, le mettant aussi sur le bois, je ne mettrai pas non plus de feu au-dessus. | 23 Let two oxen be given to us. And let them choose one ox for themselves, and, cutting it into pieces, let them set it on the wood. But they may not place fire under it. And I will prepare the other ox, and set it on the wood. But I will not place fire under it. |
| 24 Invoquez le nom de vos dieux, et moi j'invoquerai le nom de mon Seigneur, et que le Dieu qui répondra par le feu soit reconnu pour Dieu. Tout le peuple répondit : Excellente proposition. | 24 Call upon the names of your gods. And I will call on the name of my Lord. And the God who will have heeded with fire, let him be God.” And in response, all the people said, “Excellent proposition.” |
| 25 Elie dit donc aux prophètes de Baal : Choisissez un bœuf pour vous, et commencez les premiers, parce que vous êtes en plus grand nombre, et invoquez les noms de vos dieux, sans mettre le feu au bois. | 25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal: “Choose for yourselves one ox, and prepare it first. For you are many. And call on the names of your gods, but do not place fire under it.” |
| 26 Ayant donc pris le bœuf qui leur fut donné, ils préparèrent leur sacrifice, et ils invoquaient le nom de Baal depuis le matin jusqu'à midi, en disant : Baal, exaucez-nous. Mais Baal ne disait mot, et personne ne leur répondait. Et ils sautaient par-dessus l'autel qu'ils avaient fait. | 26 And when they had taken an ox, which he had given to them, they prepared it. And they called on the name of Baal, from morning even until midday, saying, “O Baal, heed us.” And there was no voice, nor did anyone respond. And so they leaped upon the altar that they had made. |
| 27 (Et Comme) Il était déjà midi, (et) Elie se moquait d'eux, en disant : Criez plus haut ; car votre dieu parle peut-être à quelqu'un, ou bien il est en chemin, ou dans une hôtellerie ; ou encore il dort, et il a besoin qu'on le réveille. | 27 And when it was now midday, Elijah ridiculed them, saying: “Cry out with a louder voice. For he is a god, and perhaps he is talking, or at an inn, or on a journey, or certainly he may be asleep, and must be awakened.” |
| 28 Ils se mirent donc à crier encore plus haut, et ils se faisaient des incisions, selon leur rite, avec des couteaux et des lancettes, jusqu'à ce qu'ils fussent couverts de sang. | 28 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and they cut themselves, in accord with their ritual, with knives and lancets, until they were entirely covered in blood. |
| 29 Midi étant passé, et le temps étant venu auquel on avait coutume d'offrir le sacrifice, les prophètes avaient beau crier et invoquer, il n'y avait personne pour leur répondre, ni pour exaucer leurs prières. | 29 Then, after midday had passed, and they were prophesying, the time had arrived when the sacrifice is usually offered. And there was no voice heard, neither did anyone heed or respond to the praying. |
| 30 (Alors) Elie dit à tout le peuple : Venez avec moi. Et le peuple s'étant approché de lui, il rétablit l'autel du Seigneur qui avait été détruit. | 30 Elijah said to all the people, “Draw near to me.” And as the people were drawing near to him, he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down. |
| 31 Il prit aussi douze pierres, selon le nombre des tribus des fils de Jacob, auquel le Seigneur avait adressé sa parole en lui disant : Israël sera ton nom ; | 31 And he took twelve stones, in accord with the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.” |
| 32 et il bâtit de ces pierres un autel au nom du Seigneur. Il fit une rigole et comme deux petits sillons autour de l'autel ; | 32 And he built from the stones an altar to the name of the Lord. And he made a trench for water, like two furrows of plowed land, all around the altar. |
| 33 il prépara le bois, coupa le bœuf par morceaux, et le mit sur le bois ; | 33 And he arranged the wood, and he cut the ox into pieces, and he placed it on the wood. |
| 34 et il dit : Emplissez d'eau quatre cruches, et répandez-les sur l'holocauste et sur le bois. Il ajouta : Faites encore la même chose une seconde fois. Et quand ils l'eurent fait une seconde fois, il leur dit : Faites encore la même chose une troisième fois ; et ils répandirent de l'eau pour la troisième fois, | 34 And he said, “Fill four containers with water, and pour it over the holocaust, and over the wood.” And again, he said, “Do this a second time.” And when they had done it a second time, he said, “Do it also a third time.” And they did so a third time. |
| 35 en sorte que les eaux couraient autour de l'autel, et que la rigole en était toute pleine. | 35 And the water was running down around the altar, and the pit of the trench was filled with water. |
| 36 Le temps étant venu d'offrir l'holocauste, le prophète Elie s'approcha, et dit : Seigneur Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et de Jacob, faites voir aujourd'hui que vous êtes le Dieu d'Israël, et que je suis votre serviteur, et que c'est par votre ordre que j'ai fait toutes ces choses. | 36 And when it was now time for the holocaust to be offered, the prophet Elijah, drawing near, said: “O Lord, God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Israel, reveal this day that you are the God of Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have acted, in all these things, in accord with your precept. |
| 37 Exaucez-moi, Seigneur, exaucez-moi, afin que ce peuple apprenne que vous êtes le Seigneur Dieu, et que vous avez de nouveau converti leur cœur. | 37 Heed me, O Lord, heed me, so that this people may learn that you are the Lord God, and that you have converted their heart again.” |
| 38 En même temps le feu du Seigneur tomba, et dévora l'holocauste, le bois et les pierres, la poussière même, et l'eau qui était dans la rigole (autour de l'autel). | 38 Then the fire of the Lord fell down and devoured the holocaust, and the wood, and the stones, and even the dust, and it absorbed the water that was in the trench. |
| 39 Lorsque tout le peuple eut vu cela, il se prosterna le visage contre terre, et il dit : C'est le Seigneur qui est Dieu, c'est le Seigneur qui est Dieu. | 39 And when all the people had seen it, they fell upon their face, and they said: “The Lord himself is God! The Lord himself is God!” |
| 40 Alors Elie leur dit : Prenez les prophètes de Baal, et qu'il n'en échappe pas un seul (d'entre eux) ; et le peuple s'étant saisi d'eux, Elie les mena au torrent de Cison où il les fit mourir. | 40 And Elijah said to them, “Apprehend the prophets of Baal, and do not let even one of them escape.” And when they had apprehended them, Elijah led them down to the torrent Kishon, and he put them to death there. |
| 41 Elie dit ensuite à Achab : Montez, mangez et buvez ; car j'entends le bruit d'une grande pluie. | 41 And Elijah said to Ahab “Ascend; eat and drink. For there is the sound of an abundance of rain.” |
| 42 Achab monta pour manger et pour boire, et Elie monta au sommet du Carmel, où, se prosternant jusqu'à terre, il mit son visage entre ses genoux ; | 42 Ahab ascended, so that he might eat and drink. But Elijah ascended to the top of Carmel, and bending down to the ground, he placed his face between his knees. |
| 43 et il dit à son serviteur : Va et regarde du côté de la mer. Ce serviteur, étant allé regarder, vint lui dire : Il n'y a rien. Elie lui dit encore : Retournes-y par sept fois. | 43 And he said to his servant, “Ascend, and gaze out toward the sea.” And when he had ascended, and had contemplated, he said, “There is nothing.” And again, he said to him, “Return seven times.” |
| 44 Et la septième fois il parut un petit nuage, comme le pied d'un homme, qui s'élevait de la mer. Elie dit : Va dire à Achab : Faites atteler votre char, et descendez, de peur que la pluie ne vous surprenne. | 44 And at the seventh time, behold, a little cloud ascended from the sea like the footstep of a man. And he said: “Ascend, and say to Ahab, ‘Yoke your chariot, and descend; otherwise, the rain may prevent you.’ ” |
| 45 Et tandis qu'il se tournait d'un côté et d'autre, le ciel fut tout à coup obscurci, il y eut des nuées, et du vent, et il tomba une grande pluie. Achab montant donc sur son char s'en alla à Jezrahel. | 45 And as he was turning himself this way and that, behold, the heavens were darkened, and there were clouds and wind, and a great rainstorm occurred. And so Ahab, going up, went away to Jezreel. |
| 46 Et en même temps la main du Seigneur fut sur Elie, qui, s'étant ceint les reins, courut devant Achab jusqu'à ce qu'il arrivât à Jezrahel. | 46 And the hand of the Lord was upon Elijah. And cinching his waist, he ran before Ahab, until he arrived at Jezreel. |
