| 1 Mon fils, ne prive pas le pauvre de son aumône, et ne détourne pas tes yeux de l'indigent. | 1 Son, defraud not the poor of alms, and turn not away thy eyes from the poor. |
| 2 Ne méprise pas celui qui a faim, et n'aigris pas le pauvre dans sa pénurie. | 2 Despise not the hungry soul: and provoke not the Boor in his want. |
| 3 N'attriste pas le coeur du pauvre, et ne diffère point de donner à celui qui est dans la détresse. | 3 Afflict not the heart of the needy, and defer not to give to him that is in distress. |
| 4 Ne rejette point la prière de l'affligé, et ne détourne pas ton visage du pauvre. | 4 Reject not the petition of the afflicted: and turn not away thy face from the needy. |
| 5 Ne détourne pas tes yeux de l'indigent, de peur qu'il ne s'irrite, et ne donne pas lieu à ceux qui t'implorent de te maudire par derrière. | 5 Turn not away thy eyes from the poor for fear of anger: and leave not to them that ask of thee to curse thee behind thy back. |
| 6 Car celui qui te maudit dans l'amertume de son âme sera exaucé dans son imprécation, et il sera exaucé par Celui qui l'a créé. | 6 For the prayer of him that curseth thee in the bitterness of his soul, shall be heard, for he that made him will hear him. |
| 7 Rends-toi affable à l'assemblée des pauvres, et humilie ton âme devant les anciens, et baisse la tête devant les grands. | 7 Make thyself affable to the congregation of the poor, and humble thy soul to the ancient, and bow thy head to a great man. |
| 8 Prête l'oreille au pauvre sans chagrin, et acquitte ta dette, et réponds-lui amicalement et avec douceur. | 8 Bow down thy ear cheerfully to the poor, and pay what thou owest, and answer him peaceable words with mildness. |
| 9 Délivre de la main du superbe celui qui souffre violence, et ne supporte pas cela méchamment dans ton âme. | 9 Deliver him that suffereth wrong out of the hand of the proud: and be not fainthearted in thy soul. |
| 10 Lorsque tu rends une sentence, aie pour les orphelins la pitié d'un père, et sois comme un mari pour leur mère; | 10 In judging be merciful to the fatherless as a father, and as a husband to their mother. |
| 11 et tu seras comme le fils obéissant du Très-Haut, et Il aura compassion de toi plus qu'une mère. | 11 And thou shalt be as the obedient son of the most High, and he will have mercy on thee more than a mother. |
| 12 La sagesse inspire la vie à ses enfants; elle accueille ceux qui la cherchent, et elle les précède dans la voie de la justice. | 12 Wisdom inspireth life into her children, and protecteth them that seek after her, and will go before them in the way of justice. |
| 13 Celui qui l'aime aime la vie, et ceux qui veillent pour la trouver goûteront sa douceur. | 13 And he that loveth her, loveth life: and they that watch for her, shall embrace her sweetness. |
| 14 Ceux qui la posséderont auront la vie pour héritage, et partout où elle entrera Dieu répandra Sa bénédiction. | 14 They that hold her fast, shall inherit life: and whithersoever she entereth, God will give a blessing. |
| 15 Ceux qui la servent seront obéissants au Saint, et ceux qui l'aiment sont aimés de Dieu. | 15 They that serve her, shall be servants to the holy one: and God loveth them that love her. |
| 16 Celui qui l'écoute jugera les nations, et celui qui la contemple demeurera en sécurité. | 16 He that hearkeneth to her, shall judge nations: and he that looketh upon her, shall remain secure. |
| 17 S'il a confiance en elle, il l'aura pour héritage, et sa postérité s'y affermira, | 17 If he trust to her, he shall inherit her, and his generation shall be in assurance. |
| 18 car la sagesse marche avec lui dans l'épreuve, et elle le choisit parmi les premiers. | 18 For she walketh with him in temptation, and at the first she chooseth him. |
| 19 Elle amènera sur lui la crainte, la frayeur et l'épreuve; et elle l'exercera par les peines qui accompagnent ses instructions, jusqu'à ce qu'elle l'ait sondé dans ses pensées, et qu'elle se confie à son âme. | 19 She will bring upon him fear and dread and trial: and she will scourge him with the affliction of her discipline, till she try him by her laws, and trust his soul. |
| 20 Alors elle l'affermira, elle viendra à lui par un chemin droit, et le comblera de joie; | 20 Then she will strengthen him, and make a straight way to him, and give him joy, |
| 21 et elle lui découvrira ses secrets, et elle entassera sur lui la science et l'intelligence de la justice. | 21 And will disclose her secrets to him, and will heap upon him treasures of knowledge and understanding of justice. |
| 22 Mais, s'il s'égare, elle l'abandonnera, et le livrera aux mains de son ennemi. | 22 But if he go astray, she will forsake him, and deliver him into the hands of his enemy. |
| 23 Mon fils, ménage le temps et évite le mal. | 23 Son, observe the time, and fly from evil. |
| 24 Pour le bien de ton âme, n'aie pas honte de dire la vérité; | 24 For thy soul be not ashamed to say the truth. |
| 25 car il y a une confusion qui produit le péché, et il y a une confusion qui attire la gloire et la grâce. | 25 For there is a shame that bringeth sin, and there is a shame that bringeth glory and grace. |
| 26 N'aie d'égard à personne à ton détriment, et ne mens pas aux dépens de ton âme. | 26 Accept no person against thy own person, nor against thy soul a lie. |
| 27 Ne respecte pas ton prochain dans sa chute, | 27 Reverence not thy neighbour in his fall: |
| 28 et ne retiens pas la parole lorsqu'elle peut être salutaire. Ne cache point ta sagesse dans sa beauté; | 28 And refrain not to speak in the time of salvation. Hide not thy wisdom in her beauty. |
| 29 car la sagesse se fait connaître par la langue; et le sens, la science et la doctrine paraissent dans la parole de l'homme sensé, et sa fermeté consiste dans les oeuvres de justice. | 29 For by the tongue wisdom is discerned: and understanding, and knowledge, and learning by the word of the wise, and steadfastness in the works of justice. |
| 30 Ne contradis en aucune manière la parole de vérité, mais aie honte du mensonge qui provient de ton ignorance. | 30 In nowise speak against the truth, but be ashamed of the lie of thy ignorance. |
| 31 Ne rougis pas de confesser tes péchés, et ne te soumets à personne pour pécher. | 31 Be not ashamed to confess thy sins, but submit not thyself to every man for sin. |
| 32 Ne résiste point en face au puissant, et ne te raidis pas contre le courant du fleuve. | 32 Resist not against the face of the mighty, and do not strive against the stream of the river. |
| 33 Prends la défense de la justice pour sauver ton âme, et combats jusqu'à la mort pour la justice, et Dieu combattra pour toi et renversera tes ennemis. | 33 Strive for justice for thy soul, and even unto death fight for justice, and God will overthrow thy enemies for thee. |
| 34 Ne sois pas prompt à parler, et lâche et négligent dans tes oeuvres. | 34 Be not hasty in thy tongue: and slack and remiss in thy works. |
| 35 Ne sois pas comme un lion dans ta maison, troublant ceux de ta famille et opprimant ceux qui te sont soumis. | 35 Be not as a lion in thy house, terrifying them of thy household, and oppressing them that are under thee. |
| 36 Que ta main ne soit pas tendue pour recevoir, et fermée pour donner. | 36 Let not thy hand be stretched out to receive, and shut when thou shouldst give. |
