1 But Eliphaz the Themanite, answering, said:	1 Rispose Elifaz il Temanita e disse:
2 Will a wise man answer as if he were speaking wind, and will he fill his stomach with fire?	2 «Il saggio può forse rispondere parole di vento e riempirsi il petto del vento di oriente?
3 You rebuke with words he who is not equal to you, and you speak what is not expedient for you,	3 Non servirà difendersi con parole e con discorsi in cui non c’è utilità?
4 to such an extent that, within yourself, you have expelled reverence and have taken away prayers from the presence of God.	4 Tu certo distruggi la religione e screditi il gemere davanti a Dio,
5 For your iniquity has mislead your mouth, and you imitate the tongue of blasphemers.	5 poiché la tua iniquità ispira la tua bocca e hai scelto il Finguageio degli astuti.
6 Your own mouth will condemn you, not I; and your own lips will answer you.	6 La tua bocca ti condanna, non io; le tue labbra sono testimoni contro di te.
7 Are you the first man who was born, or were you formed before the hills?	7 Sei forse tu il primo uomo nato o sei stato generato prima delle colline?
8 Have you heard the intentions of God, and will his wisdom be inferior to you?	8 Hai tu udito il consiglio di Dio e te ne sei accaparrato tutta la sapienza?
9 What do you know, about which we are ignorant? What do you understand that we do not know?	9 Che cosa sai tu, che non sappiamo anche noi? Che cosa capisci tu, che noi non comprendiamo?
10 There are with us both aged and ancient men, even more senior than your fathers.	10 C'è il canuto e il vecchio tra di noi, più avanzato in età di tuo padre.
11 Is it so important that God should console you? But your own depraved words prevent this.	11 Ti pare poco il conforto di Dio, una parola blanda rivolta a te?
12 Why does your heart exalt you, and why do you gaze with your eyes, as if thinking great things?	12 Perché il tuo cuore ti trascina e perché lampeggiano i tuoi occhi,
13 Why does your spirit stir against God, so as to utter such speeches from your mouth?	13 quando rivolti l’animo contro Dio e proferisci con la bocca tali parole?
14 What is man that he should be immaculate, and that he should appear just, having been born of woman?	14 Che cosa è un uomo per essere integro e un nato da donna per essere giusto?
15 Behold, among his holy ones not one is immutable, and even the heavens are not pure in his sight.	15 Se neppure dei suoi santi egli è sicuro e se i cieli non sono puri ai suoi occhi,
16 How much more abominable and useless is the man who drinks as if from the water of iniquity?	16 quanto meno un essere abominevole e corrotto, l’uomo, che beve l’iniquità come acqua.
17 I will reveal to you, so listen to me; and I will explain to you what I have seen.	17 lo ti istruirò, ascoltami, e ti dirò ciò che ho visto:
18 The wise acknowledge, and they do not leave behind, their fathers,	18 ciò che riferiscono i saggi, senza nulla nascondere, secondo quanto hanno ricevuto dai padri:
19 to whom alone the earth has been given, and no stranger passed among them.	19 a loro soli fu concesso il paese né alcun straniero era passato tra di loro.
20 The impious is arrogant for all his days, and the number of the years of his tyranny is uncertain.	20 Per tutti i giorni della vita l’empio è straziato, per quei brevi anni assegnati al prepotente.
21 The sound of terror is always in his ears; and when there is peace, he always suspects treason.	21 Voci spaventose ha sempre negli orecchi, e, mentre è in pace, un brigante lo sorprende.
22 He does not believe that it is possible for him to be turned from darkness into the light, for he sees around him the sword on every side.	22 Non spera di uscire dalle tenebre e si sente votato alla spada.
23 When he moves himself to seek bread, he knows that the day of darkness has been prepared for his hand.	23 Ramingo, va in cerca dove sia un pane; sa che il giorno delle tenebre è imminente.
24 Tribulation will terrify him, and anguish will prevail over him, like a king who is being prepared to go to battle.	24 L’angustia lo turba e l’angoscia lo assale come guerriero pronto all’assalto;
25 For he has extended his hand against God, and he has strengthened himself against the Almighty.	25 perché ha steso contro Dio la mano e contro Shaddai si è inalberato;
26 He has rushed against him with his throat exposed, and he has been armed with a fat neck.	26 correva contro di lui a collo duro, sotto il folto di scudi ricurvi
27 Thickness has covered his face, and lard hangs down from his sides.	27 perché aveva la faccia coperta di grasso e aveva messo pinguedine intorno ai fianchi.
28 He has lived in desolate cities and deserted houses, which have been turned into tombs.	28 Abiterà città distrutte, case dove non si abita più, che minacciano di-diventare mucchi di rovine.
29 He will not be enriched, nor will his basic necessities endure, nor will he establish his root in the earth.	29 Non arricchirà né durerà la sua fortuna né sulla terra si stenderà la sua ombra;
30 He will not withdraw from the darkness; the flame will burn up his branches, and he will be defeated by the breath of his own mouth.	30 non si allontanerà dalle tenebre, le fiamme seccheranno i suoi germogli e saranno strappati dal vento i suoi frutti.
31 He will not believe, being vainly deceived by error, that he could be redeemed at any price.	31 Non si fidi della sua altezza perché sappiamo che è vana:
32 Before his time is completed, he will pass into ruin and his hands will wither away.	32 Il suo tronco sarà tagliato prima del suo giorno, i suoi rami non verdeggeranno mai più.
33 He will be wounded like a grapevine, when its cluster is in first flower, and like an olive tree that casts off its flower.	33 Sarà spogliato come vigna delle uve acerbe, getterà. via come olivo le mignole.
34 For the congregation of the hypocrites is fruitless, and fire will devour the tabernacles of those who love to accept money.	34 Perché la stirpe dell’empio è sterile e il fuoco divora le tende venali:
35 He has conceived sorrow, and he has brought forth iniquity, and his womb prepares deceit.	35 concepisce malizie e dà alla luce sciagure e si alleva in seno la delusione».
