1 But Eliphaz the Themanite, answering, said:	1 Elifaz di Teman prese a dire:
2 Will a wise man answer as if he were speaking wind, and will he fill his stomach with fire?	2 «Potrebbe il saggio rispondere con ragioni campate in aria e riempirsi il ventre del vento d’oriente?
3 You rebuke with words he who is not equal to you, and you speak what is not expedient for you,	3 Si difende egli con parole inutili e con discorsi inconcludenti?
4 to such an extent that, within yourself, you have expelled reverence and have taken away prayers from the presence of God.	4 Ma tu distruggi la religione e abolisci la preghiera innanzi a Dio.
5 For your iniquity has mislead your mouth, and you imitate the tongue of blasphemers.	5 Infatti la tua malizia istruisce la tua bocca e scegli il linguaggio degli astuti.
6 Your own mouth will condemn you, not I; and your own lips will answer you.	6 Non io, ma la tua bocca ti condanna e le tue labbra attestano contro di te.
7 Are you the first man who was born, or were you formed before the hills?	7 Sei forse tu il primo uomo che è nato, o prima dei monti sei stato generato?
8 Have you heard the intentions of God, and will his wisdom be inferior to you?	8 Hai tu avuto accesso ai segreti consigli di Dio e ti sei appropriato tu solo della sapienza?
9 What do you know, about which we are ignorant? What do you understand that we do not know?	9 Che cosa sai tu, che noi non sappiamo? Che cosa capisci, che non sia chiaro anche a noi?
10 There are with us both aged and ancient men, even more senior than your fathers.	10 Sia il vecchio che il canuto sono fra di noi, carichi di anni più di tuo padre.
11 Is it so important that God should console you? But your own depraved words prevent this.	11 Poca cosa sono per te le consolazioni di Dio e una parola moderata rivolta a te?
12 Why does your heart exalt you, and why do you gaze with your eyes, as if thinking great things?	12 Perché il tuo cuore ti stravolge, perché ammiccano i tuoi occhi,
13 Why does your spirit stir against God, so as to utter such speeches from your mouth?	13 quando volgi contro Dio il tuo animo e fai uscire tali parole dalla tua bocca?
14 What is man that he should be immaculate, and that he should appear just, having been born of woman?	14 Che cos’è l’uomo perché si ritenga puro, perché si dica giusto un nato da donna?
15 Behold, among his holy ones not one is immutable, and even the heavens are not pure in his sight.	15 Ecco, neppure nei suoi santi egli ha fiducia e i cieli non sono puri ai suoi occhi,
16 How much more abominable and useless is the man who drinks as if from the water of iniquity?	16 tanto meno un essere abominevole e corrotto, l’uomo che beve l’iniquità come acqua.
17 I will reveal to you, so listen to me; and I will explain to you what I have seen.	17 Voglio spiegartelo, ascoltami, ti racconterò quel che ho visto,
18 The wise acknowledge, and they do not leave behind, their fathers,	18 quello che i saggi hanno riferito, che non hanno celato ad essi i loro padri;
19 to whom alone the earth has been given, and no stranger passed among them.	19 solo a loro fu concessa questa terra, né straniero alcuno era passato in mezzo a loro.
20 The impious is arrogant for all his days, and the number of the years of his tyranny is uncertain.	20 Per tutti i giorni della vita il malvagio si tormenta; sono contati gli anni riservati al violento.
21 The sound of terror is always in his ears; and when there is peace, he always suspects treason.	21 Voci di spavento gli risuonano agli orecchi e in piena pace si vede assalito dal predone.
22 He does not believe that it is possible for him to be turned from darkness into the light, for he sees around him the sword on every side.	22 Non crede di potersi sottrarre alle tenebre, egli si sente destinato alla spada.
23 When he moves himself to seek bread, he knows that the day of darkness has been prepared for his hand.	23 Abbandonato in pasto ai falchi, sa che gli è preparata la rovina. Un giorno tenebroso
24 Tribulation will terrify him, and anguish will prevail over him, like a king who is being prepared to go to battle.	24 lo spaventa, la miseria e l’angoscia l’assalgono come un re pronto all’attacco,
25 For he has extended his hand against God, and he has strengthened himself against the Almighty.	25 perché ha steso contro Dio la sua mano, ha osato farsi forte contro l’Onnipotente;
26 He has rushed against him with his throat exposed, and he has been armed with a fat neck.	26 correva contro di lui a testa alta, al riparo del curvo spessore del suo scudo,
27 Thickness has covered his face, and lard hangs down from his sides.	27 poiché aveva la faccia coperta di grasso e pinguedine intorno ai suoi fianchi.
28 He has lived in desolate cities and deserted houses, which have been turned into tombs.	28 Avrà dimora in città diroccate, in case dove non si abita più, destinate a diventare macerie.
29 He will not be enriched, nor will his basic necessities endure, nor will he establish his root in the earth.	29 Non si arricchirà, non durerà la sua fortuna, le sue proprietà non si estenderanno sulla terra.
30 He will not withdraw from the darkness; the flame will burn up his branches, and he will be defeated by the breath of his own mouth.	30 Alle tenebre non sfuggirà, il fuoco seccherà i suoi germogli e il vento porterà via i suoi fiori.
31 He will not believe, being vainly deceived by error, that he could be redeemed at any price.	31 Non si affidi alla vanità che è fallace, perché vanità sarà la sua ricompensa.
32 Before his time is completed, he will pass into ruin and his hands will wither away.	32 Prima del tempo saranno disseccati, i suoi rami non rinverdiranno più.
33 He will be wounded like a grapevine, when its cluster is in first flower, and like an olive tree that casts off its flower.	33 Sarà spogliato come vigna della sua uva ancora acerba e getterà via come ulivo i suoi fiori,
34 For the congregation of the hypocrites is fruitless, and fire will devour the tabernacles of those who love to accept money.	34 poiché la stirpe dell’empio è sterile e il fuoco divora le tende dell’uomo venale.
35 He has conceived sorrow, and he has brought forth iniquity, and his womb prepares deceit.	35 Concepisce malizia e genera sventura e nel suo seno alleva l’inganno».
