1 A good name is better than good ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth.	1 Boa fama vale mais que bom perfume; mais vale o dia da morte que o dia do nascimento.
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting, For that is the end of every man, and the living should take it to heart.	2 Melhor é ir para a casa onde há luto que para a casa onde há banquete. Porque aí se vê aparecer o fim de todo homem e os vivos nele refletem.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter, because when the face is sad the heart grows wiser.	3 Tristeza vale mais que riso, porque a tristeza do semblante é boa para o coração.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.	4 O coração dos sábios está na casa do luto, o coração dos insensatos na casa da alegria.
5 It is better to hearken to the wise man's rebuke than to hearken to the song of fools;	5 É melhor ouvir a reprimenda de um sábio que a canção de um tolo,
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the fool's laughter.	6 porque qual o crepitar dos espinhos na caldeira, tal é o riso do insensato. E isso é ainda vaidade.
7 For oppression can make a fool of a wise man, and a bribe corrupts the heart.	7 A opressão torna um sábio insensato; os presentes corrompem o coração.
8 Better is the end of speech than its beginning; better is the patient spirit than the lofty spirit.	8 Mais vale o fim de uma coisa que seu começo. Um espírito paciente vale mais que um espírito orgulhoso.
9 Do not in spirit become quickly discontented, for discontent lodges in the bosom of a fool.	9 Não cedas prontamente ao espírito de irritação; é no coração dos insensatos que reside a irritação.
10 Do not say: How is it that former times were better than these? For it is not in wisdom that you ask about this.	10 Não digas jamais: Como pode ser que os dias de outrora eram melhores que estes de agora? Porque não é a sabedoria que te inspira esta pergunta.
11 Wisdom and an inheritance are good, and an advantage to those that see the sun.	11 A sabedoria é tão boa como uma herança, e é de proveito aos que vêem o sol.
12 For the protection of wisdom is as the protection of money; and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of its owner.	12 Pois está-se à sombra da sabedoria como se está à sombra do dinheiro: a utilidade do saber consiste em que a sabedoria dá vida ao que a possui.
13 Consider the work of God. Who can make straight what he has made crooked?	13 Considera a obra de Deus: quem poderá endireitar o que ele fez curvo?
14 On a good day enjoy good things, and on an evil day consider: Both the one and the other God has made, so that man cannot find fault with him in anything.	14 No dia da felicidade, sê alegre; no dia da desgraça, pensa; porque Deus fez uma e outra, de tal modo que o homem não descubra o futuro.
15 I have seen all manner of things in my vain days: a just man perishing in his justice, and a wicked one surviving in his wickedness.	15 No decurso de minha vã existência, vi tudo isso: há o justo que morre permanecendo justo e o ímpio que dura apesar de sua malícia.
16 "Be not just to excess, and be not overwise, lest you be ruined.	16 Não sejas justo excessivamente, nem sábio além da medida. Por que te tornarias estúpido?
17 Be not wicked to excess, and be not foolish. Why should you die before your time?"	17 Não sejas excessivamente mau, e não sejas insensato. Por que haverias de morrer antes de tua hora?
18 It is good to hold to this rule, and not to let that one go; but he who fears God will win through at all events.	18 É bom que guardes isto, e que não negligencies aquilo: porque aquele que teme a Deus, realizará uma e outra coisa.
19 Wisdom is a better defense for the wise man than would be ten princes in the city,	19 A sabedoria dá ao sábio mais força que dez chefes de guerra reunidos numa cidade.
20 yet there is no man on earth so just as to do good and never sin.	20 Não há homem justo sobre a terra que faça o bem sem jamais pecar.
21 Do not give heed to every word that is spoken lest you hear your servant speaking ill of you,	21 Não prestes atenção em todas as palavras que se dizem, para que não ouças dizer que teu servo fala mal de ti;
22 for you know in your heart that you have many times spoken ill of others.	22 porque teu coração bem sabe que tu mesmo, muitas vezes, falaste mal dos outros.
23 All these things I probed in wisdom. I said, "I will acquire wisdom"; but it was beyond me.	23 Tudo isso eu perscrutei com sabedoria. Eu disse comigo mesmo: Eu quero ser sábio. Mas a sabedoria ficou longe de mim.
24 What exists is far-reaching; it is deep, very deep: who can find it out?	24 Aquilo que acontece é longínquo, profundo, profundo: quem o poderá sondar?
25 I turned my thoughts toward knowledge; I sought and pursued wisdom and reason, and I recognized that wickedness is foolish and folly is madness.	25 Eu me apliquei de todo o coração a perscrutar, a sondar a sabedoria e a razão das coisas, a reconhecer que a maldade é uma loucura e a falta de razão uma demência.
26 More bitter than death I find the woman who is a hunter's trap, whose heart is a snare and whose hands are prison bonds. He who is pleasing to God will escape her, but the sinner will be entrapped by her.	26 Eu descobri que a mulher é coisa mais amarga que a morte, porque ela é um laço, e seu coração é uma rede, e suas mãos, cadeias. Aquele que é agradável a Deus lhe escapa, mas o pecador será preso por ela.
27 Behold, this have I found, says Qoheleth, adding one thing to another that I might discover the answer	27 Eis o que encontrei, diz o Eclesiastes, procurando descobrir a razão de uma coisa depois de outra.
28 which my soul still seeks and has not found: One man out of a thousand have I come upon, but a woman among them all I have not found.	28 Eis o que eu procuro continuamente sem descobrir: encontrei um homem entre mil, mas nenhuma mulher entre todas
29 Behold, only this have I found out: God made mankind straight, but men have had recourse to many calculations.	29 Somente encontrei isto: Deus criou o homem reto, mas é ele que procura os extravios.
