NEW AMERICAN BIBLELXX
A good name is better than good ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth.1 αγαθον ονομα υπερ ελαιον αγαθον και ημερα του θανατου υπερ ημεραν γενεσεως αυτου
It is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting, For that is the end of every man, and the living should take it to heart.2 αγαθον πορευθηναι εις οικον πενθους η οτι πορευθηναι εις οικον ποτου καθοτι τουτο τελος παντος του ανθρωπου και ο ζων δωσει εις καρδιαν αυτου
Sorrow is better than laughter, because when the face is sad the heart grows wiser.3 αγαθον θυμος υπερ γελωτα οτι εν κακια προσωπου αγαθυνθησεται καρδια
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.4 καρδια σοφων εν οικω πενθους και καρδια αφρονων εν οικω ευφροσυνης
It is better to hearken to the wise man's rebuke than to hearken to the song of fools;5 αγαθον το ακουσαι επιτιμησιν σοφου υπερ ανδρα ακουοντα ασμα αφρονων
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the fool's laughter.6 οτι ως φωνη των ακανθων υπο τον λεβητα ουτως γελως των αφρονων και γε τουτο ματαιοτης
For oppression can make a fool of a wise man, and a bribe corrupts the heart.7 οτι η συκοφαντια περιφερει σοφον και απολλυσι την καρδιαν ευτονιας αυτου
Better is the end of speech than its beginning; better is the patient spirit than the lofty spirit.8 αγαθη εσχατη λογων υπερ αρχην αυτου αγαθον μακροθυμος υπερ υψηλον πνευματι
Do not in spirit become quickly discontented, for discontent lodges in the bosom of a fool.9 μη σπευσης εν πνευματι σου του θυμουσθαι οτι θυμος εν κολπω αφρονων αναπαυσεται
Do not say: How is it that former times were better than these? For it is not in wisdom that you ask about this.10 μη ειπης τι εγενετο οτι αι ημεραι αι προτεραι ησαν αγαθαι υπερ ταυτας οτι ουκ εν σοφια επηρωτησας περι τουτου
Wisdom and an inheritance are good, and an advantage to those that see the sun.11 αγαθη σοφια μετα κληροδοσιας και περισσεια τοις θεωρουσιν τον ηλιον
For the protection of wisdom is as the protection of money; and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of its owner.12 οτι εν σκια αυτης η σοφια ως σκια του αργυριου και περισσεια γνωσεως της σοφιας ζωοποιησει τον παρ' αυτης
Consider the work of God. Who can make straight what he has made crooked?13 ιδε τα ποιηματα του θεου οτι τις δυνησεται του κοσμησαι ον αν ο θεος διαστρεψη αυτον
On a good day enjoy good things, and on an evil day consider: Both the one and the other God has made, so that man cannot find fault with him in anything.14 εν ημερα αγαθωσυνης ζηθι εν αγαθω και εν ημερα κακιας ιδε και γε συν τουτο συμφωνον τουτω εποιησεν ο θεος περι λαλιας ινα μη ευρη ο ανθρωπος οπισω αυτου μηδεν
I have seen all manner of things in my vain days: a just man perishing in his justice, and a wicked one surviving in his wickedness.15 συν τα παντα ειδον εν ημεραις ματαιοτητος μου εστιν δικαιος απολλυμενος εν δικαιω αυτου και εστιν ασεβης μενων εν κακια αυτου
"Be not just to excess, and be not overwise, lest you be ruined.16 μη γινου δικαιος πολυ και μη σοφιζου περισσα μηποτε εκπλαγης
Be not wicked to excess, and be not foolish. Why should you die before your time?"17 μη ασεβησης πολυ και μη γινου σκληρος ινα μη αποθανης εν ου καιρω σου
It is good to hold to this rule, and not to let that one go; but he who fears God will win through at all events.18 αγαθον το αντεχεσθαι σε εν τουτω και γε απο τουτου μη ανης την χειρα σου οτι φοβουμενος τον θεον εξελευσεται τα παντα
Wisdom is a better defense for the wise man than would be ten princes in the city,19 η σοφια βοηθησει τω σοφω υπερ δεκα εξουσιαζοντας τους οντας εν τη πολει
yet there is no man on earth so just as to do good and never sin.20 οτι ανθρωπος ουκ εστιν δικαιος εν τη γη ος ποιησει αγαθον και ουχ αμαρτησεται
Do not give heed to every word that is spoken lest you hear your servant speaking ill of you,21 και γε εις παντας τους λογους ους λαλησουσιν μη θης καρδιαν σου οπως μη ακουσης του δουλου σου καταρωμενου σε
for you know in your heart that you have many times spoken ill of others.22 οτι πλειστακις πονηρευσεται σε και καθοδους πολλας κακωσει καρδιαν σου οπως και γε συ κατηρασω ετερους
All these things I probed in wisdom. I said, "I will acquire wisdom"; but it was beyond me.23 παντα ταυτα επειρασα εν τη σοφια ειπα σοφισθησομαι
What exists is far-reaching; it is deep, very deep: who can find it out?24 και αυτη εμακρυνθη απ' εμου μακραν υπερ ο ην και βαθυ βαθος τις ευρησει αυτο
I turned my thoughts toward knowledge; I sought and pursued wisdom and reason, and I recognized that wickedness is foolish and folly is madness.25 εκυκλωσα εγω και η καρδια μου του γνωναι και του κατασκεψασθαι και ζητησαι σοφιαν και ψηφον και του γνωναι ασεβους αφροσυνην και σκληριαν και περιφοραν
More bitter than death I find the woman who is a hunter's trap, whose heart is a snare and whose hands are prison bonds. He who is pleasing to God will escape her, but the sinner will be entrapped by her.26 και ευρισκω εγω πικροτερον υπερ θανατον συν την γυναικα ητις εστιν θηρευματα και σαγηναι καρδια αυτης δεσμοι χειρες αυτης αγαθος προ προσωπου του θεου εξαιρεθησεται απ' αυτης και αμαρτανων συλλημφθησεται εν αυτη
Behold, this have I found, says Qoheleth, adding one thing to another that I might discover the answer27 ιδε τουτο ευρον ειπεν ο εκκλησιαστης μια τη μια του ευρειν λογισμον
which my soul still seeks and has not found: One man out of a thousand have I come upon, but a woman among them all I have not found.28 ον ετι εζητησεν η ψυχη μου και ουχ ευρον ανθρωπον ενα απο χιλιων ευρον και γυναικα εν πασι τουτοις ουχ ευρον
Behold, only this have I found out: God made mankind straight, but men have had recourse to many calculations.29 πλην ιδε τουτο ευρον ο εποιησεν ο θεος συν τον ανθρωπον ευθη και αυτοι εζητησαν λογισμους πολλους
