εαν καθισης δειπνειν επι τραπεζης δυναστων νοητως νοει τα παρατιθεμενα σοι1 When you sit down to eat with a leader, pay close attention to what has been set before your face,
και επιβαλλε την χειρα σου ειδως οτι τοιαυτα σε δει παρασκευασαι2 and put a knife to your throat, if, in such a way, you could hold your soul in your own power.
ει δε απληστοτερος ει μη επιθυμει των εδεσματων αυτου ταυτα γαρ εχεται ζωης ψευδους3 Do not desire his foods, in which is the bread of deceit.
μη παρεκτεινου πενης ων πλουσιω τη δε ση εννοια αποσχου4 Do not be willing to labor so that you may be enriched. But set limits by your prudence.
εαν επιστησης το σον ομμα προς αυτον ουδαμου φανειται κατεσκευασται γαρ αυτω πτερυγες ωσπερ αετου και υποστρεφει εις τον οικον του προεστηκοτος αυτου5 Do not raise your eyes toward wealth that you are not able to have. For they will make themselves wings, like those of an eagle, and they will fly in the sky.
μη συνδειπνει ανδρι βασκανω μηδε επιθυμει των βρωματων αυτου6 Do not eat with an envious man, and do not desire his foods.
ον τροπον γαρ ει τις καταπιοι τριχα ουτως εσθιει και πινει7 For, like a seer and an interpreter of dreams, he presumes what he does not know. “Eat and drink,” he will say to you; and his mind is not with you.
μηδε προς σε εισαγαγης αυτον και φαγης τον ψωμον σου μετ' αυτου εξεμεσει γαρ αυτον και λυμανειται τους λογους σου τους καλους8 The foods that you had eaten, you will vomit up. And you will lose the beauty in your words.
εις ωτα αφρονος μηδεν λεγε μηποτε μυκτηριση τους συνετους λογους σου9 Do not speak into the ears of the unwise. They will despise the doctrine of your eloquence.
μη μεταθης ορια αιωνια εις δε κτημα ορφανων μη εισελθης10 Do not touch the boundaries of little ones, and do not enter into the field of the fatherless.
ο γαρ λυτρουμενος αυτους κυριος κραταιος εστιν και κρινει την κρισιν αυτων μετα σου11 For their close relative is strong, and he will judge their case against you.
δος εις παιδειαν την καρδιαν σου τα δε ωτα σου ετοιμασον λογοις αισθησεως12 Let your heart enter into doctrine, and let your ears enter into words of knowledge.
μη αποσχη νηπιον παιδευειν οτι εαν παταξης αυτον ραβδω ου μη αποθανη13 Do not be willing to take away discipline from a child. For if you strike him with the rod, he will not die.
συ μεν γαρ παταξεις αυτον ραβδω την δε ψυχην αυτου εκ θανατου ρυση14 You will strike him with the rod, and so shall you deliver his soul from Hell.
υιε εαν σοφη γενηται σου η καρδια ευφρανεις και την εμην καρδιαν15 My son, if your soul will become wise, my heart will be glad with you.
και ενδιατριψει λογοις τα σα χειλη προς τα εμα χειλη εαν ορθα ωσιν16 And my temperament will exult, when your lips will have spoken what is upright.
μη ζηλουτω η καρδια σου αμαρτωλους αλλα εν φοβω κυριου ισθι ολην την ημεραν17 Let not your heart compete with sinners. But be in the fear of the Lord all day long.
εαν γαρ τηρησης αυτα εσται σοι εκγονα η δε ελπις σου ουκ αποστησεται18 For you will have hope in the end, and your expectation will not be taken away.
ακουε υιε και σοφος γινου και κατευθυνε εννοιας σης καρδιας19 Listen, my son, and be wise, and direct your soul along the way.
μη ισθι οινοποτης μηδε εκτεινου συμβολαις κρεων τε αγορασμοις20 Do not be willing to be in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in the carousings of those who gather to feed on flesh.
πας γαρ μεθυσος και πορνοκοπος πτωχευσει και ενδυσεται διερρηγμενα και ρακωδη πας υπνωδης21 For those who waste time drinking, and who surrender themselves to symbols, will be consumed. And those who sleep will be clothed in rags.
ακουε υιε πατρος του γεννησαντος σε και μη καταφρονει οτι γεγηρακεν σου η μητηρ22 Listen to your father, who conceived you. And do not despise your mother, when she is old.
-23 Purchase truth, and do not sell wisdom, or doctrine, or understanding.
καλως εκτρεφει πατηρ δικαιος επι δε υιω σοφω ευφραινεται η ψυχη αυτου24 The father of the just exults in gladness; he who has conceived the wise will rejoice in him.
ευφραινεσθω ο πατηρ και η μητηρ επι σοι και χαιρετω η τεκουσα σε25 Let your father and your mother be joyful, and may she who conceived you exult.
δος μοι υιε σην καρδιαν οι δε σοι οφθαλμοι εμας οδους τηρειτωσαν26 My son, offer me your heart, and let your eyes keep to my ways.
πιθος γαρ τετρημενος εστιν αλλοτριος οικος και φρεαρ στενον αλλοτριον27 For a loose woman is a deep pit, and a foreign woman is a constricted well.
ουτος γαρ συντομως απολειται και πας παρανομος αναλωθησεται28 She lies in wait along the way like a robber. And the incautious one whom she sees, she will put to death.
τινι ουαι τινι θορυβος τινι κρισις τινι αηδιαι και λεσχαι τινι συντριμματα δια κενης τινος πελειοι οι οφθαλμοι29 Who has woe? Whose father has woe? Who has quarrels? Who falls into pits? Who has wounds without cause? Who has watery eyes?
ου των εγχρονιζοντων εν οινοις ου των ιχνευοντων που ποτοι γινονται30 Is it not those who linger over wine, and who strive to be drinking from their cups?
μη μεθυσκεσθε οινω αλλα ομιλειτε ανθρωποις δικαιοις και ομιλειτε εν περιπατοις εαν γαρ εις τας φιαλας και τα ποτηρια δως τους οφθαλμους σου υστερον περιπατησεις γυμνοτερος υπερου31 Do not gaze into the wine when it turns gold, when its color shines in the glass. It enters pleasantly,
το δε εσχατον ωσπερ υπο οφεως πεπληγως εκτεινεται και ωσπερ υπο κεραστου διαχειται αυτω ο ιος32 but in the end, it will bite like a snake, and it will spread poison like a king of snakes.
οι οφθαλμοι σου οταν ιδωσιν αλλοτριαν το στομα σου τοτε λαλησει σκολια33 Your eyes will see women who are outsiders, and your heart will utter perversities.
και κατακειση ωσπερ εν καρδια θαλασσης και ωσπερ κυβερνητης εν πολλω κλυδωνι34 And you will be like someone sleeping in the middle of the sea, and like a pilot, fast asleep, who has lost his hold on the helm.
ερεις δε τυπτουσιν με και ουκ επονεσα και ενεπαιξαν μοι εγω δε ουκ ηδειν ποτε ορθρος εσται ινα ελθων ζητησω μεθ' ων συνελευσομαι35 And you will say: “They have beaten me, but I did not feel pain. They have dragged me, and I did not realize it. When will I awaken and find more wine?”
