1 What needeth a man to seek things that are above him, whereas he knoweth not what is profitable for him in his life, in all the days of his pilgrimage, and the time that passeth like a shadow? Or who can tell him what shall be after him under the sun?	1 Meglio un buon nome che un buon profumo e il giorno della morte che quello della nascita.
2 A good name is better than precious ointments: and the day of death than the day of one's birth.	2 Meglio andare in una casa dove si fa cordoglio, che in una casa dove si fa baldoria, perché è questa la fine di tutti gli uomini e il vivo così ci riflette.
3 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to the house of feasting: for in that we are put in mind of the end of all, and the living thinketh what is to come.	3 Meglio la tristezza del riso, perché davanti a un volto triste il cuore si fa migliore.
4 Anger is better than laughter: because by the sadness of the countenance the mind of the offender is corrected.	4 Il pensiero del sapiente è rivolto alla casa in cordoglio, il pensiero dello stolto alla casa in allegria.
5 The heart of the wise is where there is mourning, and the heart of fools where there is mirth.	5 Meglio ascoltare il rimprovero del sapiente piuttosto che l'adulazione degli stolti,
6 It is better to be rebuked by a wise man, than to be deceived by the flattery of fools.	6 perché come lo scoppiettio degli sterpi sotto la pentola, così è il riso dello stolto. Ma anche questo è vanità,
7 For as the crackling of thorns burning under a pot, so is the laughter of a fool: now this also is vanity.	7 perché l'oppressione può rendere stolto il sapiente, e un donativo può corrompere il cuore.
8 Oppression troubleth the wise, and shall destroy the strength of his heart.	8 Meglio la fine di una cosa che il suo inizio, meglio la longanimità che la superbia.
9 Better is the end of a speech than the beginning. Better is the patient man than the presumptuous.	9 Non essere facile ad irritarti nell'intimo, perché l'irritazione ha sede nel seno degli stolti.
10 Be not quickly angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of a fool.	10 Non ti domandare com'è che il tempo passato è migliore di quello di oggi, perché questo problema non viene da saggezza.
11 Say not: What thinkest thou is the cause that former times were better than they are now? for this manner of question is foolish.	11 E' bene avere oltre alla sapienza un patrimonio: è un vantaggio per quelli che vedono il sole,
12 Wisdom with riches is more profitable, and bringeth more advantage to them that see the sun.	12 perché si vive all'ombra della sapienza, si vive all'ombra del danaro; ma vale di più il sapere, perché la sapienza fa vivere chi la possiede.
13 For as wisdom is a defence, so money is a defence : but learning and wisdom excel in this, that they give life to him that possesseth them.	13 Cerca di capire l'opera di Dio, perché nessuno può raddrizzare ciò che egli ha fatto curvo.
14 Consider the works of God, that no man can correct whom he hath despised.	14 Nei giorni felici sii lieto, nei giorni del dolore rifletti: gli uni come gli altri vengono per volere di Dio, perché l'uomo non possa sapere mai nulla del proprio futuro.
15 In the good day enjoy good things, and beware beforehand of the evil day: for God hath made both the one and the other, that man may not find against him any just complaint.	15 Tutto ho veduto nei giorni miei vani. C'è il giusto che perisce nonostante la sua giustizia, e l'empio che vive a lungo nonostante la sua malvagità.
16 These things also I saw in the days of my vanity: A just man perisheth in his justice, and a wicked man liveth a long time in his wickedness.	16 Cerca perciò di non essere né troppo giusto né troppo saggio, se non vuoi perire.
17 Be not over just: and be not more wise than is necessary, lest thou become stupid.	17 Ma non essere nemmeno troppo cattivo né troppo stolto, se non vuoi perire prima del tuo tempo.
18 Be not overmuch wicked: and be not foolish, lest thou die before thy time.	18 E' bene che tu stia attaccato a una cosa, ma che tu non ti discosti nemmeno dall'altra. Quel che conta è che tu tema Dio, e riuscirai in entrambe le cose.
19 It is good that thou shouldst hold up the just, yea and from him withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God, neglecteth nothing.	19 La sapienza rappresenta per il saggio una forza maggiore di quella di dieci potenti in una città,
20 Wisdom hath strengthened the wise more than ten princes of the city.	20 per quanto sulla terra non ci sia nessun uomo che sia giusto, che faccia il bene senza peccare.
21 For there is no just man upon earth, that doth good, and sinneth not.	21 Inoltre, non prestare attenzione a tutte le parole che si dicono, perché non ti capiti di sentire il tuo servo parlar male di te,
22 But do not apply thy heart to all words that are spoken: lest perhaps thou hear thy servant reviling thee.	22 ché la tua coscienza sa che anche tu, molte volte, hai parlato male degli altri.
23 For thy conscience knoweth that thou also hast often spoken evil of others.	23 Poiché è con la sapienza che avevo fatte tutte queste considerazioni, decisi di diventare sapiente, ma la sapienza era lontana da me.
24 I have tried all things in wisdom. I have said: I will be wise: and it departed farther from me,	24 Lontano è il reale ed estremamente profondo. Nessuno ne verrà a capo.
25 Much more than it was: it is a great depth, who shall find it out?	25 Allora mi detti a riflettere nel mio cuore per cercare la sapienza e l'interpretazione delle cose, facendo esperienza del male, dell'insipienza, della stoltezza e della follia.
26 I have surveyed all things with my mind, to know, and consider, and seek out wisdom and reason: and to know the wickedness of the fool, and the error of the imprudent:	26 E questo ho trovato, che la donna è più amara della morte, perché essa è un laccio, il suo cuore è una rete e catene le sue braccia. Chi è gradito a Dio ne può scampare, ma il peccatore ci resta preso.
27 And I have found a woman more bitter than death, who is the hunter's snare, and her heart is a net, and her hands are bands. He that pleaseth God shall escape from her: but he that is a sinner, shall be caught by her.	27 Ecco, questo è ciò che ho trovato, ha detto Qohèlet, nel cercare la ragione di tutto, cosa per cosa:
28 Lo this have I found, said Ecclesiastes, weighing one thing after another, that I might find out the account,	28 aquello che cerco, non l'ho trovato.
29 Which yet my soul seeketh, and I have not found it. One man among a thousand I have found, a woman among them all I have not found.	29 Ma questo l'ho trovato: Dio ha fatto l'uomo semplice; è lui che va in cerca di tanti e tanti perché.
30 Only this I have found, that God made man right, and he hath entangled himself with an infinity of questions. Who is as the wise man? and who hath known the resolution of the word?
