1 And Job answered, and said:	1 Job prit la parole et dit:
2 Indeed I know it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with	2 Oui, je le reconnais, tout cela est vrai: comment un homme aurait-il raison contre Dieu?
3 If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one for a thousand.	3 S’il voulait discuter avec lui, pourrait-il répondre une fois sur mille?
4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath resisted him, and hath had peace ?	4 Il pense avec sagesse, sa force a tout pouvoir, peut-on lui résister impunément?
5 Who hath removed mountains, and they whom he overthrew in his wrath, knew it not.	5 Il déplace les montagnes sans qu’elles le sachent, il les retourne s’il se met en colère.
6 Who shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.	6 Il ébranle la terre sur son socle et ses colonnes vacillent.
7 Who commandeth tile sun and it riseth not: and shutteth up the stars as it were under a seal:	7 Il suffit qu’il parle, le soleil ne brille plus, un tour de clé, et ce sont les étoiles.
8 Who alone spreadeth out the heavens, and walketh upon the waves of the sea.	8 Il a déployé, tout seul, la voûte aux étoiles, il chemine sur le plancher des eaux.
9 Who maketh Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the inner parts of the south.	9 Il a fait la Grande Ourse, et puis Orion, et les Pléiades et les Chambres du Sud.
10 Who doth things great and incomprehensible, and wonderful, of which there is no number.	10 Il fait des choses si grandes qu’on ne peut les sonder, des merveilles impossibles à compter!
11 If he come to me, I shall not see him: if he depart I shall not understand.	11 S’il passe près de moi, je ne le vois pas, il me frôle sans que je l’aperçoive.
12 If he examine on a sudden, who shall answer him? or who can say: Why dost thou so?	12 S’il prend de force, va-t-on l’en empêcher, ou lui dire: “Que fais-tu là?”
13 God, whose wrath no mall can resist, and under whom they stoop that bear up the world.	13 Dieu ne se reprend pas quand il s’est emporté, ceux qui aidaient Rahab sont toujours sous ses pieds.
14 What am I then, that I should answer him, and have words with him?	14 Voulez-vous que j’aille, moi, lui répliquer et me mettre à discuter avec lui,
15 I, who although I should have any just thing, would not answer, but would make supplication to my judge.	15 ou à supplier mon juge qui ne me répond pas quand je suis dans mon droit?
16 And if he should hear me when I call, I should not believe that he had heard my voice.	16 Je pourrais l’appeler, attendant une réponse, mais comment croire qu’il entendra ma voix?
17 For he shall crush me in a whirlwind, and multiply my wounds even without cause.	17 C’est lui qui m’écrase pour un cheveu, qui multiplie sans raison mes blessures.
18 He alloweth not my spirit to rest, and he filleth me with bitterness.	18 Il ne me laisse pas reprendre mon souffle tandis qu’il m’envoie jusqu’à plus soif la peine.
19 If strength be demanded, he is most strong: if equity of judgment, no man dare bear witness for me.	19 Employer la force? Il sera le plus fort. Aller aux juges? Qui fera la convocation?
20 If I would justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I would shew myself innocent, he shall prove me wicked.	20 Je peux être juste, mes paroles m’accuseront, même si je suis parfait, elles me condamneront.
21 Although I should be simple, even this my soul shall be ignorant of, and I shall be weary of my life.	21 Mais suis-je parfait? Je ne le sais pas: la vie n’a pas de sens!
22 One thing there is that I have spoken, both the innocent and the wicked he consumeth.	22 Tout est pareil et je peux dire: il supprime l’innocent avec le coupable.
23 If he scourge, let him kill at once, and not laugh at the pains of the innocent.	23 Quand une catastrophe répand soudain la mort, il se moque de l’épreuve des innocents.
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked, he covereth the face of the judges thereof: and if it be not he, who is it then?	24 Quand un pays tombe aux mains des méchants, il met un bandeau sur les yeux des juges. Si ce n’est pas lui, qui donc alors?
25 My days have been swifter than a post: they have fled away and have not seen good.	25 Mes jours ont passé plus vite qu’un coureur: ils fuyaient sans connaître le bonheur.
26 They have passed by as ships carrying fruits, as an eagle flying to the prey.	26 Ils glissaient comme une barque de joncs, comme un aigle qui fond sur sa proie.
27 If I say: I will not speak so: I change my face, and am tormented with sorrow.	27 J’ai beau dire: “Laissons là ces plaintes, montrons un autre visage: le sourire!”
28 I feared all my works, knowing that thou didst not spare the offender.	28 mes épreuves me laissent angoissé car je sais que tu ne me vois pas innocent.
29 But if so also I am wicked, why have I laboured in vain?	29 Si je dois être coupable, à quoi bon me fatiguer pour rien?
30 If I be washed as it were with snow waters, and my hands shall shine ever so clean :	30 J’aurais beau me laver à l’eau de neige et me blanchir les mains avec du savon,
31 Yet thou shalt plunge me in filth, and my garments shall abhor me,	31 tu me jetterais aussitôt dans la boue, et même ma tunique m’aurait en dégoût!
32 For I shall not answer a man that is like myself: nor one that may be heard with me equally in judgment.	32 Il n’est pas quelqu’un comme moi, pour que je lui dise: Allons ensemble au tribunal!
33 There is none that may be able to reprove both, and to put his hand between both.	33 Il faudrait un arbitre entre nous, pour nous prendre l’un et l’autre par l’épaule,
34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me.	34 pour écarter son bâton qui me frappe et l’épouvante où me jettent ses terreurs.
35 I will speak, and will not fear him: for I cannot answer while I am in fear.	35 Mais puisqu’il n’en est pas ainsi, je veux parler sans crainte, seul avec moi-même.
