¹ Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said:	¹ Prese allora la parola Sofar di Naama, e disse:
² Shall not he that speaketh much, hear also? or shall a man full of talk be justified?	² « Può essere che il parolaio non abbia risposta, e che il linguacciuto abbia ragione?
³ Shall men hold their peace to thee only? and when thou hast mocked others, shall no man confute thee?	³ Tu solo farai tacere gli uomini, e dopo aver scherniti gli altri, da nessuno sarai confutato?
⁴ For thou hast said: My word is pure, and I am clean in thy sight.	⁴ Tu hai detto: La mia parola è pura e sono senza macchia nel tuo cospetto.
⁵ And I wish that God would speak with thee, and would open his lips to thee,	⁵ Oh! volesse Dio parlar lui con te, e aprirti le sue labbra,
⁶ That he might shew thee the secrets of wisdom, and that his law is manifold, and thou mightest understand that he exacteth much less of thee, than thy iniquity deserveth.	⁶ per manifestarti i segreti della sapienza, i molteplici aspetti della sua legge! Allora capiresti che esige da te molto meno di quello che non meritino le tue colpe.
⁷ Peradventure thou wilt comprehend the steps of God, and wilt find out the Almighty perfectly?	⁷ Pretendi forse di investigare le vie di Dio, e di comprendere perfettamente l'Onnipotente?
⁸ He is higher than heaven, and what wilt thou do ? he is deeper than hell, and how wilt thou know?	⁸ E' più alto del cielo, e come farai (ad arrivarci)? E' più profondo dell'inferno, e come potrai scrutarlo?
⁹ The measure of him is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.	⁹ La sua misura è più lunga della terra, e più larga del mare.
¹⁰ If he shall overturn all things, or shall press them together, who shall contradict him?	¹⁰ Se mette sossopra tutte le cose, o le confonde insieme, chi potrà dirgli nulla?
¹¹ For he knoweth the vanity of men, and when he seeth iniquity, doth he not consider it?	¹¹ Egli ben conosce la vanità degli uomini ed è possibile che vedendo l'iniquità non se ne curi?
¹² A vain man is lifted up into pride, and thinketh himself born free like a wild ass's colt.	¹² L'uomo stolto si leva in superbia, e si crede nato libero come il puledro dell'asino salvatico.
¹³ Rut thou hast hardened thy heart, and hast spread thy hands to him.	¹³ Ma se tu, che hai indurato il cuore nello stendere le mani verso di lui,
¹⁴ If thou wilt put away from thee the iniquity that is in thy hand, and lot not injustice remain in thy tabernacle:	¹⁴ toglierai l'iniquità dalla tua mano, e non farai rimaner l'ingiustizia nella tua dimora,
¹⁵ Then mayst thou lift up thy face without spot, and thou shalt be steadfast, and shalt not fear.	¹⁵ allora potrai alzare la tua faccia senza macchia, sarai incrollabile e senza paura,
¹⁶ Thou shalt also forget misery, and remember it only as waters that are passed away.	¹⁶ dimenticherai la miseria; te ne ricorderai come d'acqua passata.
¹⁷ And brightness like that of the noonday, shall arise to thee at evening: and when thou shalt think thyself consumed, thou shalt rise as the day star.	¹⁷ Sul far della sera ti sorgerà una specie di luce meridiana, e quando ti crederai finito, sorgerai come la stella del mattino.
¹⁸ And thou shalt have confidence, hope being set before thee, and being buried thou shalt sleep secure.	¹⁸ Sarai pieno di fiducia per la speranza che ti attende, e anche sotterrato dormirai tranquillo.
¹⁹ Thou shalt rest, and there shall be none to make thee afraid: and many shall entreat thy face.	¹⁹ Riposerai, e non verrà nessuno a spaventarti, e moltissimi supplicheranno la tua faccia.
²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall decay, and the way to escape shall fail them, and their hope the abomination of the soul.	²⁰ Ma gli occhi degli empi verranno meno, non vi sarà scampo per essi, e la loro speranza diverrà l'abominazione della loro anima ».
