| 1 No increpes al anciano, sino exhórtalo como a un padre; a los jóvenes, como a hermanos; | 1 You should not rebuke an old man, but rather plead with him, as if he were your father; with young men, like brothers; |
| 2 a las ancianas, como a madres; a las jóvenes, como a hermanas, con toda pureza. | 2 with old women, like mothers; with young women, in all chastity, like sisters. |
| 3 Honra a las viudas, a las que son verdaderamente viudas. | 3 Honor those widows who are true widows. |
| 4 Pero si alguna viuda tiene hijos o nietos, que estos aprendan primero a cumplir con sus deberes con la propia familia y a corresponder como es debido a lo que han recibido de los progenitores, porque esto es agradable a los ojos de Dios. | 4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let her first learn to manage her own household, and to fulfill, in turn, her own obligation to her parents; for this is acceptable before God. |
| 5 La que es verdaderamente viuda, y ha quedado sola, tiene puesta su esperanza en Dios y persevera en las súplicas y en las oraciones noche y día. | 5 But she who is truly a widow and is destitute, let her hope in God, and let her be urgent in supplications and prayers, night and day. |
| 6 En cambio, la que se da a los placeres, aunque viva, está muerta. | 6 For she who is living in pleasures is dead, while living. |
| 7 Ordena estas cosas, para que sean irreprochables. | 7 And give instruction in this, so that they may be beyond reproach. |
| 8 Pues si alguno no cuida de los suyos y sobre todo de los de su casa, ha renegado de la fe y es peor que uno que no cree. | 8 But if anyone has no concern for his own, and especially for those of his own household, he has denied the faith, and he is worse than an unbeliever. |
| 9 Para que una viuda sea inscrita en la lista se requiere que no tenga menos de sesenta años, que haya sido mujer de un solo marido | 9 Let a widow be chosen who is no less than sixty years of age, who was the wife of one husband, |
| 10 y esté acreditada por sus buenas obras: si crio bien a sus hijos, si practicó la hospitalidad, si lavó los pies de los santos, si asistió a los atribulados, si procuró hacer todo tipo de obras buenas. | 10 who has testimony of her good works: whether she has educated children, or has provided hospitality, or has washed the feet of the saints, or has ministered to those suffering tribulation, or has pursued any kind of good work. |
| 11 No aceptes a las viudas jóvenes, pues, cuando se avivan en ellas los impulsos sensuales que alejan de Cristo, quieren casarse, | 11 But avoid the younger widows. For once they have flourished in Christ, they will want to marry, |
| 12 y se ven condenadas por haber roto su compromiso anterior. | 12 resulting in damnation, because they have disregarded the primacy of faith. |
| 13 Y al mismo tiempo, como además están ociosas, se acostumbran a ir por las casas; con lo cual, además de ociosas, se hacen también charlatanas y entrometidas, hablando lo que no conviene. | 13 And being at the same time also idle, they learn to go from house to house, being not only idle, but also talkative and curious, speaking of things which do not concern them. |
| 14 Quiero, pues, que las jóvenes se casen, tengan hijos, gobiernen su propia casa y no den al adversario ningún pretexto para que critique. | 14 Therefore, I want the younger women to marry, to procreate children, to be mothers of families, to provide no ready opportunity for the adversary to speak evil. |
| 15 Pues ya algunas se han descarriado siguiendo a Satanás. | 15 For certain ones have already been turned back to Satan. |
| 16 Si alguna creyente tiene viudas, que las asista, para que no se grave a la Iglesia y esta pueda asistir a las que son verdaderamente viudas. | 16 If any among the faithful have widows, let him minister to them and not burden the Church, so that there may be enough for those who are true widows. |
| 17 Los presbíteros que presiden bien son dignos de doble honor, principalmente los que se afanan en la predicación y en la enseñanza. | 17 Let priests who lead well be held worthy of twice the honor, especially those who labor in the Word and in doctrine. |
| 18 Pues dice la Escritura: No pondrás bozal al buey que trilla y El obrero es digno de su salario. | 18 For Scripture says: “You shall not muzzle an ox as it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his pay.” |
| 19 No admitas una acusación contra un presbítero, a menos que se apoye en dos o tres testigos. | 19 Do not be willing to accept an accusation against a priest, except under two or three witnesses. |
| 20 A los que pequen, repréndelos delante de todos, para que los demás cobren temor. | 20 Reprove sinners in the sight of everyone, so that the others may have fear. |
| 21 Te conjuro delante de Dios y de Cristo Jesús y de los ángeles elegidos que observes estas cosas sin prejuicios y sin dejarte llevar por favoritismos. | 21 I testify before God and Christ Jesus and the elect Angels, that you should observe these things without prejudgment, doing nothing which shows favoritism to either side. |
| 22 A nadie impongas las manos precipitadamente, ni te hagas cómplice de pecados ajenos. Consérvate puro. | 22 You should not be quick to impose hands on anyone, nor should you take part in the sins of outsiders. Keep yourself chaste. |
| 23 En adelante ya no bebas más agua sola, sino toma un poco de vino a causa del estómago y de tus frecuentes enfermedades. | 23 Do not continue to drink only water, but make use of a little wine, for the sake of your stomach and your frequent infirmities. |
| 24 Los pecados de algunos son manifiestos incluso antes del juicio; los de otros, en cambio, lo son inmediatamente después. | 24 The sins of some men have been made manifest, preceding them to judgment, but those of others are manifested later. |
| 25 De igual modo, también las buenas obras son manifiestas y las que no son buenas no pueden permanecer ocultas. | 25 Similarly, too, good deeds have been made manifest, but even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden. |
