| 1 También vosotros un tiempo estabais muertos por vuestras culpas y pecados, | 1 And you were dead, through the crimes and the sins |
| 2 cuando seguíais el proceder de este mundo, según el príncipe de la potestad del aire, el espíritu que ahora actúa en los rebeldes contra Dios. | 2 which used to make up your way of life when you were living by the principles of this world, obeying theruler who dominates the air, the spirit who is at work in those who rebel. |
| 3 Como ellos, también nosotros vivíamos en el pasado siguiendo las tendencias de la carne, obedeciendo los impulsos del instinto y de la imaginación; y, por naturaleza, estábamos destinados a la ira, como los demás. | 3 We too were al among them once, living only by our natural inclinations, obeying the demands ofhuman self-indulgence and our own whim; our nature made us no less liable to God's retribution than the rest ofthe world. |
| 4 Pero Dios, rico en misericordia, por el gran amor con que nos amó, | 4 But God, being rich in faithful love, through the great love with which he loved us, |
| 5 estando nosotros muertos por los pecados, nos ha hecho revivir con Cristo —estáis salvados por pura gracia—; | 5 even when we were dead in our sins, brought us to life with Christ -- it is through grace that you havebeen saved- |
| 6 nos ha resucitado con Cristo Jesús, nos ha sentado en el cielo con él, | 6 and raised us up with him and gave us a place with him in heaven, in Christ Jesus. |
| 7 para revelar en los tiempos venideros la inmensa riqueza de su gracia, mediante su bondad para con nosotros en Cristo Jesús. | 7 This was to show for al ages to come, through his goodness towards us in Christ Jesus, howextraordinarily rich he is in grace. |
| 8 En efecto, por gracia estáis salvados, mediante la fe. | 8 Because it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith; not by anything of your own, but by agift from God; |
| 9 Y esto no viene de vosotros: es don de Dios. Tampoco viene de las obras, para que nadie pueda presumir. | 9 not by anything that you have done, so that nobody can claim the credit. |
| 10 Somos, pues, obra suya. Dios nos ha creado en Cristo Jesús, para que nos dediquemos a las buenas obras, que de antemano dispuso él que practicásemos. | 10 We are God's work of art, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has alreadydesignated to make up our way of life. |
| 11 Por tanto vosotros, los que un tiempo erais gentiles según la carne, llamados incircuncisos por los que se llamaban circuncisos en razón de una operación practicada en la carne, recordad | 11 Do not forget, then, that there was a time when you who were gentiles by physical descent, termed theuncircumcised by those who speak of themselves as the circumcised by reason of a physical operation, |
| 12 que entonces vivíais sin Cristo: extranjeros a la ciudadanía de Israel, ajenos a las alianzas y sus promesas, sin esperanza y sin Dios en el mundo. | 12 do not forget, I say, that you were at that time separate from Christ and excluded from membership ofIsrael, aliens with no part in the covenants of the Promise, limited to this world, without hope and without God. |
| 13 Ahora, gracias a Cristo Jesús, los que un tiempo estabais lejos estáis cerca por la sangre de Cristo. | 13 But now in Christ Jesus, you that used to be so far off have been brought close, by the blood of Christ. |
| 14 Él es nuestra paz: el que de los dos pueblos ha hecho uno, derribando en su cuerpo de carne el muro que los separaba: la enemistad. | 14 For he is the peace between us, and has made the two into one entity and broken down the barrierwhich used to keep them apart, by destroying in his own person the hostility, |
| 15 Él ha abolido la ley con sus mandamientos y decretos, para crear, de los dos, en sí mismo, un único hombre nuevo, haciendo las paces. | 15 that is, the Law of commandments with its decrees. His purpose in this was, by restoring peace, tocreate a single New Man out of the two of them, |
| 16 Reconcilió con Dios a los dos, uniéndolos en un solo cuerpo mediante la cruz, dando muerte, en él, a la hostilidad. | 16 and through the cross, to reconcile them both to God in one Body; in his own person he kil ed thehostility. |
| 17 Vino a anunciar la paz: paz a vosotros los de lejos, paz también a los de cerca. | 17 He came to bring the good news of peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. |
| 18 Así, unos y otros, podemos acercarnos al Padre por medio de él en un mismo Espíritu. | 18 Through him, then, we both in the one Spirit have free access to the Father. |
| 19 Así pues, ya no sois extranjeros ni forasteros, sino conciudadanos de los santos, y miembros de la familia de Dios. | 19 So you are no longer aliens or foreign visitors; you are fel ow-citizens with the holy people of God andpart of God's household. |
| 20 Estáis edificados sobre el cimiento de los apóstoles y profetas, y el mismo Cristo Jesús es la piedra angular. | 20 You are built upon the foundations of the apostles and prophets, and Christ Jesus himself is thecornerstone. |
| 21 Por él todo el edificio queda ensamblado, y se va levantando hasta formar un templo consagrado al Señor. | 21 Every structure knit together in him grows into a holy temple in the Lord; |
| 22 Por él también vosotros entráis con ellos en la construcción, para ser morada de Dios, por el Espíritu. | 22 and you too, in him, are being built up into a dwelling-place of God in the Spirit. |
