EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 El que teme al Señor no sufrirá ningún mal y en la prueba será librado una y otra vez.	1 No evil wil befal one who fears the Lord, such a one will be rescued even in the ordeal.
2 Un hombre sabio nunca detesta la Ley, pero el que finge observarla es como un barco en la tempestad.	2 No one who hates the Law is wise, one who is hypocritical about it is like a storm-tossed ship.
3 Un hombre inteligente confía en la Ley y la tiene tanta fe como a un oráculo divino.	3 An intelligent person will put faith in the Law, for such a one the Law is as dependable as a prophecy.
4 Prepara lo que vas a decir, y así serás escuchado, resume lo que sabes, y luego responde.	4 Prepare what you have to say and you will get a hearing, marshal your information before you answer.
5 Los sentimientos del necio son una rueda de carro y su conversación, como un eje que da vueltas.	5 The feelings of a fool are like a cart-wheel, a fool's thought revolves like a turning axle.
6 Un amigo burlón es como un caballo en celo: relincha bajo cualquier jinete.	6 A rutting stal ion is like a sarcastic friend; he neighs, whoever rides him.
7 ¿Por qué un día es más importante que otro, si a todos los días del año la luz les viene del sol?	7 Why is one day better than another, though the sun gives the same daylight throughout the year?
8 Es la ciencia del Señor la que los hizo diferentes, y él diversificó los tiempos y las fiestas:	8 They have been differentiated in the mind of the Lord, who has diversified the seasons and feasts;
9 a unos días los exaltó y consagró, y a otros los computó entre los días ordinarios.	9 some he has made more important and has hal owed, others he has made ordinary days.
10 Todos los hombres provienen del suelo, y Adán fue creado de la tierra;	10 Human beings come from the ground, Adam himself was formed out of earth;
11 pero, en su gran sabiduría, el Señor los distinguió y los hizo marchar por caminos diversos:	11 in the fullness of his wisdom the Lord has made distinctions between them, and diversified theirconditions.
12 a unos los bendijo y exaltó, los consagró y los acercó a él; a otros los maldijo y humilló, y los derribó de sus puestos.	12 Some of them he has blessed, hal owing and setting them near him; others he has cursed andhumiliated by degrading them from their positions.
13 Como está la arcilla en las manos del alfarero, que dispone de ella según su voluntad, así están los hombres en las manos de su Creador, y él les retribuirá según su decisión.	13 Like clay in the hands of the potter to mould as it pleases him, so are human beings in the hands oftheir Maker to reward as he judges right.
14 Frente al mal, está el bien y frente a la muerte, la vida: así, frente al hombre bueno, está el pecador.	14 Opposite evil stands good, opposite death, life; so too opposite the devout stands the sinner.
15 Considera asimismo todas las obras del Altísimo: están de dos en dos, una frente a otra.	15 Contemplate al the works of the Most High, you wil find they go in pairs, by opposites.
16 Yo, el último en llegar, me mantuve alerta como quien recoge detrás de los viñadores.	16 Although the last to come, I have kept my eyes open like a man picking up what the grape-pickershave left.
17 Por la bendición del Señor, he llegado a tiempo, y como un viñador, he llenado el lagar.	17 By the blessing of the Lord I have come in first, and like a true grape-picker have fil ed my winepress.
18 Sepan que no me fatigué para mí solamente, sino para todos los que buscan la instrucción.	18 And note, I have not been working merely for myself, but for al who seek instruction.
19 Escúchenme, grandes del pueblo, y ustedes, jefes de la asamblea, préstenme atención.	19 Listen to me, important public figures, presidents of the assembly, give ear!
20 Sea hijo o mujer, hermano o amigo, a nadie des autoridad sobre ti mientras vivas. Tampoco entregues tus bienes a otro, no sea que te arrepientas y los tengas que reclamar.	20 Neither to son nor wife, brother nor friend, give power over yourself during your own lifetime. And donot give your property to anyone else, in case you regret it and have to ask for it back.
21 Mientras vivas y tengas aliento, no te dejes enajenar por nadie:	21 As long as you live and there is breath in your body, do not yield power over yourself to anyone;
22 es mejor que tus hijos te pidan que tener tus ojos fijos en sus manos.	22 better for your children to come begging to you, than for you to have to go begging to them.
23 En todo lo que hagas, sé tú el que dirige, y no manches con nada tu reputación.	23 In al you do be the master, and leave a reputation unstained.
24 Cuando lleguen a su término los días de tu vida, a la hora de la muerte, reparte tu herencia.	24 The day your life draws to a close, at the hour of death, then distribute your heritage.
25 Al asno el forraje, el bastón y la carga; al servidor el pan, la disciplina y el trabajo.	25 Fodder, the stick and burdens for a donkey, bread, discipline and work for a slave.
26 Obliga a trabajar a tu esclavo, y encontrarás descanso; déjalo desocupado, y buscará la libertad.	26 Work your slave hard, and you wil have peace of mind, leave his hands idle, and he wil be asking forhis freedom.
27 El yugo y las riendas doblegan la nuca, y para el servidor perverso, están la tortura y el tormento.	27 Yoke and harness wil bow the neck, for a bad servant, torments and the rack.
28 Fuérzalo a trabajar, para que no se quede ocioso, porque el ocio enseña muchas cosas malas.	28 Set him to work, so that he will not be idle; idleness teaches every kind of mischief.
29 Oblígalo a trabajar como le corresponde, y si no obedece, ata sus pies con cadenas.	29 Keep him at his duties, where he should be, if he is disobedient, clap him in irons.
30 Pero a nadie le exijas más de la cuenta, y no hagas nada sin justicia.	30 But do not be over-exacting with anyone, and do nothing contrary to justice.
31 Si no tienes más que un servidor, considéralo como a ti mismo, porque lo has adquirido con sangre;	31 You have only one slave? Treat him like yourself, since you have acquired him with blood.
32 si no tienes más que un servidor, trátalo como a un hermano, porque lo necesitas tanto como a ti mismo.	32 You have only one slave? Treat him as a brother, since you need him as you need yourself.
33 Si tú lo maltratas y él termina por escaparse, ¿por qué camino lo irás a buscar?	33 If you ill-treat him and he runs away, which way wil you go to look for him?
