| 2 para conocer la sabiduría y la instrucción, para entender las palabras profundas, | 2 That men may know wisdom and instruction, understand words of insight, |
| 3 para obtener una instrucción esmerada –justicia, equidad y rectitud– | 3 receive instruction in wise dealing, righteousness, justice, and equity; |
| 4 para dar perspicacia a los incautos, y al joven, ciencia y reflexión; | 4 that prudence may be given to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth-- |
| 5 Que escuche el sabio, y acrecentará su saber, y el inteligente adquirirá el arte de dirigir. | 5 the wise man also may hear and increase in learning, and the man of understanding acquire skill, |
| 6 para entender los proverbios y las sentencias agudas, las palabras de los sabios y sus enigmas. | 6 to understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles. |
| 7 El temor del Señor es el comienzo de la sabiduría, los necios desprecian la sabiduría y la instrucción. | 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. |
| 8 Escucha, hijo mío, la instrucción de tu padre y no rechaces la enseñanza de tu madre, | 8 Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and reject not your mother's teaching; |
| 9 porque son una diadema de gracia para tu cabeza y un collar para tu cuello. | 9 for they are a fair garland for your head, and pendants for your neck. |
| 10 Hijo mío, si los pecadores intentan seducirte, tú no aceptes. | 10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. |
| 11 Si ellos dicen: «Ven con nosotros, tendamos una emboscada sangrienta, acechemos por puro gusto al inocente; | 11 If they say, "Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us wantonly ambush the innocent; |
| 12 traguémoslos vivos como el Abismo, todos enteros, como los que bajan a la Fosa; | 12 like Sheol let us swallow them alive and whole, like those who go down to the Pit; |
| 13 hallaremos toda clase de bienes preciosos, llenaremos nuestras casas con el botín; | 13 we shall find all precious goods, we shall fill our houses with spoil; |
| 14 tendrás tu parte igual que nosotros, todos haremos una bolsa común». | 14 throw in your lot among us, we will all have one purse"-- |
| 15 hijo mío, no los acompañes por el camino, retira tus pies de sus senderos, | 15 my son, do not walk in the way with them, hold back your foot from their paths; |
| 16 porque sus pies corren hacia el mal y se apresuran para derramar sangre. | 16 for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. |
| 17 Pero en vano se tiende la red, si pueden verla todos los pájaros: | 17 For in vain is a net spread in the sight of any bird; |
| 18 ellos tienden contra sí mismos una emboscada sangrienta, están al acecho contra sus propias vidas. | 18 but these men lie in wait for their own blood, they set an ambush for their own lives. |
| 19 Tal es la suerte del que obtiene ganancias injustas; le quitan la vida al que las posee. | 19 Such are the ways of all who get gain by violence; it takes away the life of its possessors. |
| 20 La Sabiduría clama por las calles, en las plazas hace oír su voz; | 20 Wisdom cries aloud in the street; in the markets she raises her voice; |
| 21 llama en las esquinas más concurridas, a la entrada de las puertas de la ciudad, dice sus palabras: | 21 on the top of the walls she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: |
| 22 «¿Hasta cuándo, incautos, amarán la ingenuidad? ¿Hasta cuándo los insolentes se complacerán en su insolencia y los necios aborrecerán la ciencia? | 22 "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? |
| 23 Tengan en cuenta mi reproche: yo voy a abrirles mi corazón y les haré conocer mis palabras. | 23 Give heed to my reproof; behold, I will pour out my thoughts to you; I will make my words known to you. |
| 24 Porque llamo y ustedes se resisten, extiendo mi mano y nadie presta atención, | 24 Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded, |
| 25 porque ustedes desoyen todos mis consejos y no aceptan mi reproche, | 25 and you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, |
| 26 yo, a mi vez, me reiré de la ruina de ustedes, me burlaré cuando los asalte el terror, | 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when panic strikes you, |
| 27 cuando los invada el terror como una tormenta y les llegue la ruina como un huracán. cuando les sobrevengan la angustia y la tribulación: | 27 when panic strikes you like a storm, and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. |
| 28 entonces me llamarán, y yo no responderé, me buscarán ansiosamente, y no me encontrarán. | 28 Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me. |
| 29 Porque ellos aborrecieron la ciencia y no eligieron el temor del Señor, | 29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD, |
| 30 porque no quisieron mi consejo y despreciaron todos mis reproches, | 30 would have none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof, |
| 31 gustarán el fruto de su propia conducta, se hartarán de sus consejos. | 31 therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way and be sated with their own devices. |
| 32 Porque a los ingenuos los mata su propio extravío y la desidia pierde a los necios, | 32 For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacence of fools destroys them; |
| 33 pero el que me escucha vivirá seguro y estará tranquilo, sin temer ningún mal». | 33 but he who listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of evil." |
