BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Jefté el galaadita, era un valiente guerrero. Era hijo de una prostituta. Y era Galaad el que había engendrado a Jefté.	1 Jephthah the Gileadite was a valiant warrior. He was a prostitute's son. Gilead was Jephthah's father,
2 Pero la mujer de Galaad le había dado hijos, y crecieron los hijos de la mujer y echaron a Jefté diciéndole: «Tú no tendrás herencia en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de otra mujer».	2 but Gilead's wife also bore him sons, and the sons of this wife, when they grew up, drove Jephthahaway, saying, 'No share of the paternal heritage for you, since you are a son of another woman.'
3 Jefté huyó lejos de sus hermanos y se quedó en el país de Tob. Se le juntó una banda de gente miserable, que hacía correrías con él.	3 Jephthah fled far from his brothers and settled in the territory of Tob. Jephthah enlisted a group ofadventurers who used to go raiding with him.
4 Andando el tiempo, los ammonitas vinieron a combatir contra Israel.	4 It was some time after this that the Ammonites made war on Israel.
5 Y cuando los ammonitas estaban atacando a Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron a buscar a Jefté al país de Tob.	5 And when the Ammonites had attacked Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah from theterritory of Tob.
6 Dijeron a Jefté: «Ven, tú serás nuestro caudillo en la guerra con los ammonitas».	6 'Come', they said, 'and be our commander, so that we can fight the Ammonites.'
7 Pero Jefté respondió a los ancianos de Galaad: «¿No sois vosotros los que me odiasteis y me echasteis de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué acudís a mí ahora que estáis en aprieto?»	7 Jephthah replied to the elders of Gilead, 'Didn't you hate me and drive me out of my father's house?Why come to me now, when you are in trouble?'
8 Los ancianos de Galaad replicaron a Jefté: «Por eso ahora volvemos donde ti: ven con nosotros; tú atacarás a los ammonitas y serás nuestro jefe y el de todos los habitantes de Galaad».	8 The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, 'That is why we are turning to you now. Come with us; fight theAmmonites and be our chief, chief of al the people living in Gilead.'
9 Jefté respondió a los ancianos de Galaad: «Si me hacéis volver para combatir a los ammonitas y Yahveh me los entrega, yo seré vuestro jefe».	9 Jephthah then said to the elders of Gilead, 'If you bring me home to fight the Ammonites and Yahwehdefeats them for me, I am to be your chief?'
10 Respondieron a Jefté los ancianos de Galaad: «Yahveh sea testigo entre nosotros si no hacemos como tú has dicho».	10 And the elders of Gilead then said to Jephthah, 'Yahweh be witness between us, if we do not do asyou have said!'
11 Jefté partió con los ancianos de Galaad y el pueblo le hizo su jefe y caudillo; y Jefté repitió todas sus condiciones delante de Yahveh en Mispá.	11 So Jephthah set off with the elders of Gilead. The people put him at their head as chief andcommander; and Jephthah repeated al his conditions at Mizpah in Yahweh's presence.
12 Jefté envió al rey de los ammonitas mensajeros que le dijeran: «¿Qué tenemos que ver tú y yo para que vengas a atacarme en mi propio país?»	12 Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites to say to him, 'What do you have against us,for you to come and make war on my country?'
13 El rey de los ammonitas respondió a los mensajeros de Jefté: «Porque Israel, cuando subía de Egipto, se apoderó de mi país desde el Arnón hasta el Yabboq y el Jordán. Así que ahora devuélvemelo por las buenas».	13 The king of the Ammonites replied to Jephthah's messengers, 'The reason is that when Israel cameup from Egypt, they seized my country from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; so now restore it to mepeaceful y.'
14 Jefté envió de nuevo mensajeros al rey de los ammonitas	14 Jephthah sent messengers back to the king of the Ammonites
15 y le dijo: «Así habla Jefté: Israel no se ha apoderado ni del país de Moab ni del de los ammonitas.	15 with this answer, 'Jephthah says this, "Israel seized neither the country of Moab nor the country of theAmmonites.
16 Cuando subió de Egipto, Israel caminó por el desierto hasta el mar de Suf y llegó a Cadés.	16 When Israel came out of Egypt, they marched through the desert as far as the Sea of Reeds and,having reached Kadesh,
17 Entonces Israel envió mensajeros al rey de Edom para decirle: “Déjame, por favor, pasar por tu país”, pero el rey de Edom no les atendió. Los envió también al rey de Moab, el cual tampoco accedió, e Israel se quedó en Cadés;	17 Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom to say: Please let me pass through your country, butthe king of Edom would not listen. They sent similarly to the king of Moab, but he refused, and Israel remained atKadesh;
18 luego, avanzando por el desierto, rodeó el país de Edom y el de Moab y llegó al oriente del país de Moab. Acamparon a la otra parte del Arnón, sin cruzar la frontera de Moab, pues el Arnón es el límite de Moab.	18 later, moving on through the desert and skirting the countries of Edom and Moab until arriving to theeast of Moabite territory, the people camped on the other side of the Arnon but did not enter Moabite territory,the Arnon being the Moabite frontier.
19 Israel envió mensajeros a Sijón, rey de los amorreos, que reinaba en Jesbón, y le dijo: “Déjame, por favor, pasar por tu país hasta llegar a mi destino.”	19 Israel then sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, ruling in Heshbon. Israel's message was:Please let me pass through your country to my destination.
20 Pero Sijón le negó a Israel el paso por su territorio, reunió toda su gente, que acampó en Yahsá, y atacó a Israel.	20 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory; he mustered his whole army; they encampedat Jahaz, and he then joined battle with Israel.
21 Yahveh, Dios de Israel, puso a Sijón y a todo su pueblo en manos de Israel, que los derrotó, y conquistó Israel todo el país de los amorreos que habitaban allí.	21 Yahweh, God of Israel, delivered Sihon and his whole army into the power of Israel, who defeatedthem; as the result of which, Israel took possession of the entire territory of the Amorites living in that region.
22 Así conquistaron todo el territorio de los amorreos, desde el Arnón hasta el Yabboq y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.	22 Israel took possession of all the Amorite territory from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert tothe Jordan.
23 Con que Yahveh, Dios de Israel, quitó su heredad a los amorreos en favor de su pueblo Israel, ¿y tú se la vas a quitar?	23 And now that Yahweh, God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites before his people Israel, do youthink you can dispossess us?
24 ¿No posees ya todo lo que tu dios Kemós ha quitado para ti a sus poseedores? Igualmente nosotros poseemos todo lo que Yahveh nuestro Dios ha quitado para nosotros a sus poseedores.	24 Will you not keep as your possession whatever Chemosh, your god, has given you? And, just thesame, we shal keep as ours whatever Yahweh our God has given us, to inherit from those who were before us!
25 ¿Vas a ser tú más que Balaq, hijo de Sippor, rey de Moab? ¿Pudo acaso él hacerse fuerte contra Israel y luchar contra él?	25 Are you a better man than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he pick a quarrel with Israel? Didhe make war on them?
26 Cuando se estableció Israel en Jesbón y en sus filiales, en Aroer y en sus filiales y en todas las ciudades que están a ambos lados del Arnón, (trescientos años) ¿por qué no las habéis recuperado desde entonces?	26 When Israel settled in Heshbon and its dependencies, and in Aroer and its dependencies, or in any ofthe towns on the banks of the Arnon (three hundred years ago), why did you not recover them then?
27 Yo no te he ofendido; eres tú el que te portas mal conmigo si me atacas. Yahveh, el Juez, juzgue hoy entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Ammón».	27 I for my part have done you no harm, but you are wronging me by making war on me. Let Yahwehthe Judge give judgement today between the Israelites and the king of the Ammonites." '
28 Pero el rey de los ammonitas no hizo caso de las palabras que Jefté le mandó decir.	28 But the king of the Ammonites took no notice of the message that Jephthah sent him.
29 El espíritu de Yahveh vino sobre Jefté, que recorrió Galaad y Manasés, pasó por Mispá de Galaad y de Mispá de Galaad pasó donde los ammonitas.	29 The spirit of Yahweh was on Jephthah, who crossed Gilead and Manasseh, crossed by way ofMizpah in Gilead, and from Mizpah in Gilead crossed into Ammonite territory.
30 Y Jefté hizo un voto a Yahveh: «Si entregas en mis manos a los ammonitas,	30 And Jephthah made a vow to Yahweh, 'If you deliver the Ammonites into my grasp,
31 el primero que salga de las puertas de mi casa a mi encuentro cuando vuelva victorioso de los ammonitas, será para Yahveh y lo ofreceré en holocausto».	31 the first thing to come out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from fightingthe Ammonites shal belong to Yahweh, and I shal sacrifice it as a burnt offering.'
32 Jefté pasó donde los ammonitas para atacarlos, y Yahveh los puso en sus manos.	32 Jephthah crossed into Ammonite territory to attack them, and Yahweh delivered them into his grasp.
33 Los derrotó desde Aroer hasta cerca de Minnit (veinte ciudades) y hasta Abel Keramim. Fue grandísima derrota y los ammonitas fueron humillados delante de los israelitas.	33 He beat them from Aroer to the border of Minnith (twenty towns) and to Abel-Keramim. It was a verysevere defeat, and the Ammonites were humbled by the Israelites.
34 Cuando Jefté volvió a Mispá, a su casa, he aquí que su hija salía a su encuentro bailando al son de las panderetas. Era su única hija; fuera de ella no tenía ni hijo ni hija.	34 As Jephthah returned to his house at Mizpah, his daughter came out to meet him, dancing to thesound of tambourines. She was his only child; apart from her, he had neither son nor daughter.
35 Al verla, rasgó sus vestiduras y gritó: «¡Ay, hija mía! ¡Me has destrozado! ¿Habías de ser tú la causa de mi desgracia? Abrí la boca ante Yahveh y no puedo volverme atrás».	35 When he saw her, he tore his clothes and exclaimed, 'Oh my daughter, what misery you havebrought upon me! You have joined those who bring misery into my life! I have made a promise before Yahwehwhich I cannot retract.'
36 Ella le respondió: «Padre mío, has abierto tu boca ante Yahveh, haz conmigo lo que salió de tu boca, ya que Yahveh te ha concedido vengarte de tus enemigos los ammonitas».	36 She replied, 'Father, you have made a promise to Yahweh; treat me as the promise that you havemade requires, since Yahweh has granted you vengeance on your enemies the Ammonites.'
37 Después dijo a su padre: «Que se me conceda esta gracia: déjame dos meses para ir a vagar por las montañas y llorar con mis compañeras mi virginidad».	37 She then said to her father, 'Grant me this! Let me be free for two months. I shal go and wander inthe mountains, and with my companions bewail my virginity.'
38 El le dijo: «Vete». Y la dejó marchar dos meses. Ella se fue con sus compañeras y estuvo llorando su virginidad por los montes.	38 He replied, 'Go,' and let her go away for two months. So she went away with her companions andbewailed her virginity in the mountains.
39 Al cabo de los dos meses, volvió donde su padre y él cumplió en ella el voto que había hecho. La joven no había conocido varón. Y se hizo costumbre en Israel:	39 When the two months were over she went back to her father, and he treated her as the vow that hehad uttered bound him. She had remained a virgin. And hence, the custom in Israel
40 de año en año las hijas de Israel van a lamentarse cuatro días al año por la hija de Jefté el galaadita.	40 for the daughters of Israel to leave home year by year and lament over the daughter of Jephthah theGileadite for four days every year.
