1 Hijos míos, os escribo esto para que no pequéis. Pero si alguno peca, tenemos a uno que abogue ante el Padre: a Jesucristo, el Justo.	1 My children, I am writing this to you so that you may not commit sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one.
2 El es víctima de propiciación por nuestros pecados, no sólo por los nuestros, sino también por los del mundo entero.	2 He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world.
3 En esto sabemos que le conocemos: en que guardamos sus mandamientos.	3 The way we may be sure that we know him is to keep his command ments.
4 Quien dice: «Yo le conozco» y no guarda sus mandamientos es un mentiroso y la verdad no está en él.	4 Whoever says, "I know him," but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 Pero quien guarda su Palabra, ciertamente en él el amor de Dios ha llegado a su plenitud. En esto conocemos que estamos en él.	5 But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. This is the way we may know that we are in union with him:
6 Quien dice que permanece en él, debe vivir como vivió él.	6 whoever claims to abide in him ought to live (just) as he lived.
7 Queridos, no os escribo un mandamiento nuevo, sino el mandamiento antiguo, que tenéis desde el principio. Este mandamiento antiguo es la Palabra que habéis escuchado.	7 Beloved, I am writing no new commandment to you but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard.
8 Y sin embargo, os escribo un mandamiento nuevo - lo cual es verdadero en él y en vosotros - pues las tinieblas pasan y la luz verdadera brilla ya.	8 And yet I do write a new commandment to you, which holds true in him and among you, for the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.
9 Quien dice que está en la luz y aborrece a su hermano, está aún en las tinieblas.	9 Whoever says he is in the light, yet hates his brother, is still in the darkness.
10 Quien ama a su hermano permanece en la luz y no tropieza.	10 Whoever loves his brother remains in the light, and there is nothing in him to cause a fall.
11 Pero quien aborrece a su hermano está en las tinieblas, camina en las tinieblas, no sabe a dónde va, porque las tinieblas han cegado sus ojos.	11 Whoever hates his brother is in darkness; he walks in darkness and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
12 Os escribo a vosotros, hijos míos, porque se os han perdonado los pecados por su nombre.	12 I am writing to you, children, because your sins have been forgiven for his name's sake.
13 Os escribo a vosotros, padres, porque conocéis al que es desde el principio. Os escribo a vosotros, jóvenes, porque habéis vencido al Maligno.	13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have conquered the evil one.
14 Os he escrito a vosotros, hijos míos, porque conocéis al Padre, Os he escrito, padres, porque conocéis al que es desde el principio. Os he escrito, jóvenes, porque sois fuertes y la Palabra de Dios permanece en vosotros y habéis vencido al Maligno.	14 I write to you, children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong and the word of God remains in you, and you have conquered the evil one.
15 No améis al mundo ni lo que hay en el mundo. Si alguien ama al mundo, el amor del Padre no está en él.	15 Do not love the world or the things of the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 Puesto que todo lo que hay en el mundo - la concupiscencia de la carne, la concupiscencia de los ojos y la jactancia de las riquezas - no viene del Padre, sino del mundo.	16 For all that is in the world, sensual lust, enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life, is not from the Father but is from the world.
17 El mundo y sus concupiscencias pasan; pero quien cumple la voluntad de Dios permanece para siempre.	17 Yet the world and its enticement are passing away. But whoever does the will of God remains forever.
18 Hijos míos, es la última hora. Habéis oído que iba a venir un Anticristo; pues bien, muchos anticristos han aparecido, por lo cual nos damos cuenta que es ya la última hora.	18 Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that the antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. Thus we know this is the last hour.
19 Salieron de entre nosotros; pero no eran de los nuestros. Si hubiesen sido de los nuestros, habrían permanecido con nosotros. Pero sucedió así para poner de manifiesto que no todos son de los nuestros.	19 They went out from us, but they were not really of our number; if they had been, they would have remained with us. Their desertion shows that none of them was of our number.
20 En cuanto a vosotros, estáis ungidos por el Santo y todos vosotros lo sabéis.	20 But you have the anointing that comes from the holy one, and you all have knowledge.
21 Os he escrito, no porque desconozcáis la verdad, sino porque la conocéis y porque ninguna mentira viene de la verdad.	21 I write to you not because you do not know the truth but because you do, and because every lie is alien to the truth.
22 ¿Quién es el mentiroso sino el que niega que Jesús es el Cristo? Ese es el Anticristo, el que niega al Padre y al Hijo.	22 Who is the liar? Whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Whoever denies the Father and the Son, this is the antichrist.
23 Todo el que niega al Hijo tampoco posee al Padre. Quien confiesa al Hijo posee también al Padre.	23 No one who denies the Son has the Father, but whoever confesses the Son has the Father as well.
24 En cuanto a vosotros, lo que habéis oído desde el principio permanezca en vosotros. Si permanece en vosotros lo que habéis oído desde el principio, también vosotros permaneceréis en el Hijo y en el Padre,	24 Let what you heard from the beginning remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father.
25 y esta es la promesa que él mismo os hizo: la vida eterna.	25 And this is the promise that he made us: eternal life.
26 Os he escrito esto respecto a los que tratan de engañaros.	26 I write you these things about those who would deceive you.
27 Y en cuanto a vosotros, la unción que de El habéis recibido permanece en vosotros y no necesitáis que nadie os enseñe. Pero como su unción os enseña acerca de todas las cosas - y es verdadera y no mentirosa - según os enseñó, permaneced el él.	27 As for you, the anointing that you received from him remains in you, so that you do not need anyone to teach you. But his anointing teaches you about everything and is true and not false; just as it taught you, remain in him.
28 Y ahora, hijos míos, permaneced en él para que, cuando se manifieste, tengamos plena confianza y no quedemos avergonzados lejos de él en su Venida.	28 And now, children, remain in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not be put to shame by him at his coming.
29 Si sabéis que él es justo, reconoced que todo el que obra la justicia ha nacido de él.	29 If you consider that he is righteous, you also know that everyone who acts in righteousness is begotten by him.
