Deuteronomio 20

BIBLIA	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Cuando salgas a la guerra contra tus enemigos, y veas caballos, carros y un pueblo más numeroso que tú, no les tengas miedo; porque está contigo Yahveh tu Dios, el que te sacó del país de Egipto.	1 "When you go out to war against your enemies and you see horses and chariots and an army greater than your own, do not be afraid of them, for the LORD, your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt, will be with you.
2 Cuando estéis para entablar combate, el sacerdote se adelantará y hablará al pueblo.	2 "When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and say to the soldiers:
3 Les dirá: «Escucha, Israel; hoy vais a entablar combate con vuestros enemigos; no desmaye vuestro corazón, no tengáis miedo ni os turbéis, ni tembléis ante ellos,	3 'Hear, O Israel! Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Be not weakhearted or afraid; be neither alarmed nor frightened by them.
4 porque Yahveh vuestro Dios marcha con vosotros para pelear en favor vuestro contra vuestros enemigos y salvaros».	4 For it is the LORD, your God, who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies and give you victory.'
5 Luego los escribas hablarán al pueblo y dirán: «¿Quién ha edificado una casa nueva y no la ha estrenado todavía? Váyase y vuelva a su casa, no sea que muera en el combate y la estrene otro hombre.	5 "Then the officials shall say to the soldiers, 'Is there anyone who has built a new house and not yet had the housewarming? Let him return home, lest he die in battle and another dedicate it.
6 «¿Quién ha plantado una viña y todavía no la ha disfrutado? Váyase y vuelva a su casa, no sea que muera en el combate y la disfrute otro.	6 Is there anyone who has planted a vineyard and never yet enjoyed its fruits? Let him return home, lest he die in battle and another enjoy its fruits in his stead.
7 «¿Quién se ha desposado con una mujer y no se ha casado aún con ella? Váyase y vuelva a su casa, no sea que muera en el combate y se case con ella otro hombre».	7 Is there anyone who has betrothed a woman and not yet taken her as his wife? Let him return home, lest he die in battle and another take her to wife.'
8 Los escribas dirán además al pueblo: «¿Quién tiene miedo y siente enflaquecer su ánimo? Váyase y vuelva a su casa, para que no desanime el corazón de sus hermanos como lo está el suyo».	8 In fine, the officials shall say to the soldiers, 'Is there anyone who is afraid and weakhearted? Let him return home, lest he make his fellows as fainthearted as himself.'
9 En cuanto los escribas hayan acabado de hablar al pueblo, se pondrán al frente de él jefes de tropa.	9 "When the officials have finished speaking to the soldiers, military officers shall be appointed over the army.
10 Cuando te acerques a una ciudad para combatir contra ella, le propondrás la paz.	10 "When you march up to attack a city, first offer it terms of peace.
11 Si ella te responde con la paz y te abre sus puertas, todo el pueblo que se encuentre en ella te deberá tributo y te servirá.	11 If it agrees to your terms of peace and opens its gates to you, all the people to be found in it shall serve you in forced labor.
12 Pero si no hace la paz contigo y te declara la guerra, la sitiarás.	12 But if it refuses to make peace with you and instead offers you battle, lay siege to it,
13 Yahveh tu Dios la entregará en tus manos, y pasarás a filo de espada a todos sus varones;	13 and when the LORD, your God, delivers it into your hand, put every male in it to the sword;
14 las mujeres, los niños, el ganado, todo lo que haya en la ciudad, todos sus despojos, lo tomarás como botín. Comerás los despojos de los enemigos que Yahveh tu Dios te haya entregado.	14 but the women and children and livestock and all else in it that is worth plundering you may take as your booty, and you may use this plunder of your enemies which the LORD, your God, has given you.
15 Así has de tratar a las ciudades muy alejadas de ti, que no forman parte de estas naciones.	15 "That is how you shall deal with any city at a considerable distance from you, which does not belong to the peoples of this land.
16 En cuanto a las ciudades de estos pueblos que Yahveh tu Dios te da en herencia, no dejarás nada con vida,	16 But in the cities of those nations which the LORD, your God, is giving you as your heritage, you shall not leave a single soul alive.
17 sino que las consagrarás al anatema: a hititas, amorreos, cananeos, perizitas, jivitas, y jebuseos, como te ha mandado Yahveh tu Dios,	17 You must doom them all-the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites-as the LORD, your God, has commanded you,
18 para que no os enseñen a imitar todas esas abominaciones que ellos hacían en honor de sus dioses: ¡pecaríais contra Yahveh vuestro Dios!	18 lest they teach you to make any such abominable offerings as they make to their gods, and you thus sin against the LORD, your God.
19 Si, al atacar una ciudad, tienes que sitiarla mucho tiempo para tomarla, no destruirás su arbolado metiendo en él el hacha; te alimentarás de él sin talarlo. ¿Son acaso hombres los árboles del campo para que los trates como a sitiados?	19 "When you are at war with a city and have to lay siege to it for a long time before you capture it, you shall not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them. You may eat their fruit, but you must not cut down the trees. After all, are the trees of the field men, that they should be included in your siege?
20 Sin embargo podrás destruir y cortar los árboles que sabes que no son frutales, y hacer con ellos obras de asedio contra esa ciudad que está en guerra contigo, hasta que caiga.	20 However, those trees which you know are not fruit trees you may destroy, cutting them down to build siegeworks with which to reduce the city that is resisting you.
