Judit 13

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Cuando se hizo tarde, sus oficiales se apresusaron a retirarse y Bagoas cerró la tienda por el exterior, después de haber apartado de la presencia de su señor a los que todavía quedaban; y todos se fueron a dormir, fatigados por el exceso de bebida;	1 It grew late and his staff hurried away. Bagoas closed the tent from the outside, having shown outthose who stil lingered in his lord's presence. They went to their beds wearied with too much drinking,
2 quedaron en la tienda tan sólo Judit y Holofernes, desplomado sobre su lecho y rezumando vino.	2 and Judith was left alone in the tent with Holofernes who had col apsed wine-sodden on his bed.
3 Judit había mandado a su sierva que se quedara fuera de su dormitorio y esperase a que saliera, como los demás días. Porque, en efecto, ella había dicho que saldría para hacer su oración y en este mismo sentido había hablado a Bagoas.	3 Judith then told her maid to stay just outside the bedroom and wait for her to come out, as she didevery morning. She had let it be understood she would be going out to her prayers and had also spoken of herintention to Bagoas.
4 Todos se habían retirado; nadie, ni grande ni pequeño, quedó en el dormitorio. Judit, puesta de pie junto al lecho, dijo en su corazón: «¡Oh Señor, Dios de toda fuerza! Pon los ojos, en esta hora, a la empresa de mis manos para exaltación de Jerusalén.	4 By now everyone had left Holofernes, and no one, either important or unimportant, was left in thebedroom. Standing beside the bed, Judith murmured to herself: Lord God, to whom al strength belongs, prosperwhat my hands are now to do for the greater glory of Jerusalem;
5 Es la ocasión de esforzarse por tu heredad y hacer que mis decisiones sean la ruina de los enemigos que se alzan contra nosotros».	5 now is the time to recover your heritage and to further my plans to crush the enemies arrayed againstus.
6 Avanzó, después, hasta la columna del lecho que estaba junto a la cabeza de Holofernes, tomó de allí su cimitarra,	6 With that she went up to the bedpost by Holofernes' head and took down his scimitar;
7 y acercándose al lecho, agarró la cabeza de Holofernes por los cabellos y dijo: «¡Dame fortaleza, Dios de Israel, en este momento!»	7 coming closer to the bed she caught him by the hair and said, 'Make me strong today, Lord God ofIsrael!'
8 Y, con todas sus fuerzas, le descargó dos golpes sobre el cuello y le cortó la cabeza.	8 Twice she struck at his neck with all her might, and cut off his head.
9 Después hizo rodar el tronco fuera del lecho, arrancó las colgaduras de las columnas y saliendo entregó la cabeza de Holofernes a su sierva,	9 She then rol ed his body off the bed and pulled down the canopy from the bedposts. After which, shewent out and gave the head of Holofernes to her maid
10 que la metió en la alforja de las provisiones. Luego salieron las dos juntos a hacer la oración, como de ordinario, atravesaron el campemento, contornearon el barranco, subieron por el monte de Betulia y se presentaron ante las puertas de la ciudad.	10 who put it in her food bag. The two then left the camp together, as they always did when they went topray. Once they were out of the camp, they skirted the ravine, climbed the slope to Bethulia and made for thegates.
11 Judit gritó desde lejos a los centinelas de las puertas: «¡Abrid, abrid la puerta! El Señor, nuestro Dios, está con nosotros para hacer todavía hazañas en Israel y mostrar su poder contra nuestros enemigos, como lo ha hecho hoy mismo».	11 From a distance, Judith shouted to the guards on the gates, 'Open the gate! Open! For the Lord ourGod is with us stil , displaying his strength in Israel and his might against our enemies, as he has done today!'
12 Cuando los hombres de la ciudad oyeron su voz, se apresuraron a bajar a la puerta y llamaron a los ancianos.	12 Hearing her voice, the townsmen hurried down to the town gate and summoned the elders.
13 Acudieron todos corriendo, desde el más grande al más chico, porque no tenían esperanza de que ella volviera; abrieron, pues, la puerta, las recibieron, y encendiendo una hoguera para que se pudiera ver, hicieron corro en torno a ellas.	13 Everyone, great and smal , came running down, since her arrival was unexpected. They threw thegate open, welcomed the women, lit a fire to see by and crowded round them.
14 Judit, con fuerte voz, les dijo: «¡Alabad a Dios, alabadle! Alabad a Dios, que no ha apartado su misericordia de la casa de Israel, sino que esta noche ha destrozado a nuestros enemigos por mi mano».	14 Then Judith raised her voice and said, 'Praise God! Praise him! Praise the God who has notwithdrawn his mercy from the House of Israel, but has shattered our enemies by my hand tonight!'
15 Y sacando de la alforja la cabeza, se la mostró, diciéndoles: «Mirad la cabeza de Holofernes, jefe supremo del ejército asirio, y mirad las colgaduras bajo las cuales se acostaba en su borracheras. ¡El Señor le ha herido por mano de mujer!	15 She pul ed the head out of the bag and held it for them to see. 'This is the head of Holofernes,general-in-chief of the Assyrian army; here is the canopy under which he lay drunk! The Lord has struck himdown by the hand of a woman!
16 ¡Vive el Señor!, el que me ha guardado en el camino que emprendí, que fue seducido, para perdición suya, por mi rostro, pero no ha cometido conmigo ningún pecado que me manche o me deshonre».	16 Glory to the Lord who has protected me in the course I took! My face seduced him, only to his ownundoing; he committed no sin with me to shame me or disgrace me.'
17 Todo el pueblo quedó lleno de estupor y postrándose adoraron a Dios y dijeron a una: «¡Bendito seas, Dios nuestro, que has aniquilado el día de hoy a los enemigos de tu pueblo!»	17 Overcome with emotion, the people al prostrated themselves and worshipped God, exclaiming withone voice, 'Blessings on you, our God, for confounding your people's enemies today!'
18 Ozías dijo a Judit: «¡Bendita seas, hija del Dios Altísimo más que todas las mujeres de la tierra! Y bendito sea Dios, el Señor, Creador del cielo y de la tierra, que te ha guiado para cortar la cabeza del jefe de nuestros enemigos.	18 Uzziah then said to Judith: May you be blessed, my daughter, by God Most High, beyond al womenon earth; and blessed be the Lord God, Creator of heaven and earth, who guided you to cut off the head of theleader of our enemies!
19 Jamás tu confianza faltará en el corazón de los hombres que recordarán la fuerza de Dios eternamente.	19 The trust which you have shown wil not pass from human hearts, as they commemorate the power ofGod for evermore.
20 Que Dios te conceda, para exaltación perpetua, el ser favorecida con todos los bienes, porque no vacilaste en exponer tu vida a causa de la humillación de nuestra raza. Detuviste nuestra ruina procediendo rectamente ante nuestro Dios». Todo el pueblo respondió: «¡Amén, amén!»	20 God grant you may be always held in honour and rewarded with blessings, since you did not consideryour own life when our nation was brought to its knees, but warded off our ruin, walking in the right path beforeour God. And the people al said, 'Amen! Amen!'
