| 1 Roboam se fue a Siquem, porque todo Israel había ido a Siquem para proclamarle rey. | 1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. |
| 2 Lo supo Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat, que estaba todavía en Egipto, adonde había ido huyendo del rey Salomón y se volvió Jeroboam de Egipto. | 2 And when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was still in Egypt, whither he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from Egypt. |
| 3 Enviaron a llamarle y llegó Jeroboam con toda la asamblea de Israel y hablaron a Roboam diciendo: | 3 And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and said to Rehoboam, |
| 4 «Tu padre ha hecho pesado nuestro yugo; ahora tú aligera la dura servidumbre de tu padre y el pesado yugo que puso sobre nosotros, y te serviremos». | 4 "Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke upon us, and we will serve you." |
| 5 El les dijo: «Id, y dentro de tres días volved a mí», y el pueblo se fue. | 5 He said to them, "Depart for three days, then come again to me." So the people went away. |
| 6 El rey Roboam pidió consejo a los ancianos que habían servido a su padre Salomón en vida de éste, diciendo: «¿ Qué me aconsejáis que responda a este pueblo?» | 6 Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, "How do you advise me to answer this people?" |
| 7 Ellos le respondieron: «Si tú te haces hoy servidor de este pueblo y les sirves y les das buenas palabras, ellos serán siervos tuyos para siempre». | 7 And they said to him, "If you will be a servant to this people today and serve them, and speak good words to them when you answer them, then they will be your servants for ever." |
| 8 Pero él abandonó el consejo que los ancianos le aconsejaron y pidió consejo a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y estaban a su servicio. | 8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him. |
| 9 Les dijo: «¿Qué me aconsejáis que responda a este pueblo que me ha hablado diciendo: aligera el yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?» | 9 And he said to them, "What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me, 'Lighten the yoke that your father put upon us'?" |
| 10 Los jóvenes que se habían criado con él respondieron diciendo: «Esto debes responder a este pueblo que te ha dicho: “Tu padre hizo pesado nuestro yugo; ahora tú aligera nuestro yugo”, esto debes responder: Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre. | 10 And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, "Thus shall you speak to this people who said to you, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, but do you lighten it for us'; thus shall you say to them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's loins. |
| 11 Un yugo pesado cargó mi padre, mas yo haré más pesado vuestro yugo; mi padre os azotaba con azotes pero yo os azotaré con escorpiones». | 11 And now, whereas my father laid upon you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.'" |
| 12 Vino Jeroboam con todo el pueblo a Roboam al tercer día, según lo había dicho el rey: «Volved a mí al tercer día». | 12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king said, "Come to me again the third day." |
| 13 El rey repondió al pueblo con dureza, abandonando el consejo que los ancianos le aconsejaron, | 13 And the king answered the people harshly, and forsaking the counsel which the old men had given him, |
| 14 y hablándoles según el consejo de los jóvenes diciendo: «Mi padre hizo pesado vuestro yugo, yo lo haré más pesado todavía. Mi padre os ha azotado con azotes, mas yo os azotaré con escorpiones». | 14 he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions." |
| 15 No escuchó el rey al pueblo, pues se trataba de una intervención de Yahveh para cumplimiento de la palabra que Yahveh había anunciado a Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat, por medio de Ajías de Silo. | 15 So the king did not hearken to the people; for it was a turn of affairs brought about by the LORD that he might fulfil his word, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. |
| 16 Viendo todo Israel que el rey no le oía, replicó el pueblo al rey diciendo: «¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? ¡No tenemos herencia en el hijo de Jesé! ¡A tus tiendas, Israel! ¡Mira ahora por tu casa, David!» Israel se fue a sus tiendas. | 16 And when all Israel saw that the king did not hearken to them, the people answered the king, "What portion have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David." So Israel departed to their tents. |
| 17 Roboam reinó sobre los israelitas que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá. | 17 But Rehoboam reigned over the people of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah. |
| 18 El rey Roboam envió a Adoram, jefe de la leva, pero todo Israel le mató a pedradas; el rey Roboam se apresuró a subir a su carro para huir a Jerusalén. | 18 Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was taskmaster over the forced labor, and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. And King Rehoboam made haste to mount his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. |
| 19 Israel está en desobediencia contra la casa de David hasta el día de hoy. | 19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day. |
| 20 Cuando todo Israel supo que Jeroboam había vuelto, enviaron a llamarle a la asamblea y le hicieron rey sobre todo Israel; no hubo quien siguiera a la casa de David, aparte sólo la tribu de Judá. | 20 And when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. There was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only. |
| 21 En llegando a Jerusalén reunió Roboam a toda la casa de Judá y a la tribu de Benjamín, 180.000 hombres guerreros escogidos, para combatir contra la casa de Israel y devolver el reino a Roboam, hijo de Salomón. | 21 When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. |
| 22 Pero fue dirigida la palabra de Dios a Semaías, hombre de Dios, diciendo: | 22 But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God: |
| 23 «Habla a Roboam, hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y a toda la casa de Judá, a Benjamín y al resto del pueblo y diles: | 23 "Say to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, |
| 24 Así habla Yahveh: No subáis a combatir con vuestros hermanos los israelitas. Que cada uno se vuelva a su casa porque esto es cosa mía». Ellos escucharon la palabra de Yahveh, y se volvieron para ir conforme a la palabra de Yahveh. | 24 'Thus says the LORD, You shall not go up or fight against your kinsmen the people of Israel. Return every man to his home, for this thing is from me.'" So they hearkened to the word of the LORD, and went home again, according to the word of the LORD. |
| 25 Jeroboam fortificó Siquem, en la montaña de Efraím, y habitó en ella. Salió de ella y fortificó Penuel. | 25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and dwelt there; and he went out from there and built Penuel. |
| 26 Jeroboam se dijo en su corazón: «En esta situación el reino acabará por volver a la casa de David. | 26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, "Now the kingdom will turn back to the house of David; |
| 27 Si este pueblo continúa subiendo para ofrecer sacrificios en la Casa de Yahveh en Jerusalén, el corazón de este pueblo se volverá a su señor, a Roboam, rey de Judá, y me matarán». | 27 if this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah." |
| 28 Tomó consejo el rey, hizo dos becerros de oro, y dijo al pueblo: «Basta ya de subir a Jerusalén. Este es tu dios, Israel, el que te hizo subir de la tierra de Egipto». | 28 So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold. And he said to the people, "You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt." |
| 29 Colocó uno en Betel, | 29 And he set one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan. |
| 30 y el pueblo fue con el otro hasta Dan. | 30 And this thing became a sin, for the people went to the one at Bethel and to the other as far as Dan. |
| 31 Hizo Casas en los altos y estableció sacerdotes del común del pueblo que no eran de los hijos de Leví. | 31 He also made houses on high places, and appointed priests from among all the people, who were not of the Levites. |
| 32 Hizo Jeroboam una fiesta en el mes octavo, el día quince del mes, parecida a la fiesta de Judá, y subió al altar. Así hizo en Betel, ofreciendo sacrificios a los becerros que había hecho y estableciendo en Betel sacerdotes para los altos que había instituido. | 32 And Jeroboam appointed a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices upon the altar; so he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made. |
| 33 Subió al altar que había hecho en Betel el día quince del octavo mes, el mes que se había discurrido por su cuenta para instituir una fiesta para los israelitas, y subió al altar para quemar incienso. | 33 He went up to the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and he ordained a feast for the people of Israel, and went up to the altar to burn incense. |
