1 Chi ama il suo figliolo lo castiga sovente per averne in futuro consolazione e perchè egli non abbia a picchiare alle porte dei vicini. | 1 He that loveth his son, frequently chastiseth him, that he may rejoice in his latter end, and not grope after the doors of his neighbours. |
2 Chi istruisce il suo figliolo ne avrà lode e se ne glorierà in mezzo alla gente di sua famiglia. | 2 He that instructeth his son shall be praised in him, and shall glory in him in the midst of them of his household. |
3 Chi istruisce il suo figliolo muoverà ad invidia il nemico, e si glorierà di lui coi suoi amici. | 3 He that teacheth his son, maketh his enemy jealous, and in the midst of his friends he shall glory in him. |
4 Se suo padre muore, sarà come non fosse morto, perchè lascia dietro di sè uno simile a lui. | 4 His father is dead, and he is as if he were not dead: for he hath left one behind him that is like himself. |
5 Lo vide in vita e ne ebbe consolazione, nella sua morte non ebbe tristezza, e non restò confuso dinanzi ai nemici. | 5 While he lived he saw and rejoiced in him: and when he died he was not sorrowful, neither was he confounded before his enemies. |
6 Egli ha lasciato per i nemici un difensore della casa, e per gli amici chi saprà essere grato. | 6 For he left behind him a defender of his house against his enemies, and one that will requite kindness to his friends. |
7 Chi accarezza il figlio ne dovrà fasciar le piaghe, e ad ogni grido sentirà straziarsi le viscere. | 7 For the souls of his sons he shall bind up his wounds, and at every cry his bowels shall be troubled. |

13 Istruisci il tuo figliolo e affaticati intorno a lui, per non cadere nella sua vergogna. | 13 Bow down his neck while he is young, and beat his sides while he is a child, lest he grow stubborn, and regard thee not, and so be a sorrow of heart to thee. |
14 Val più un povero sano e robusto, che un ricco debole e finito dalle malattie. | 14 Instruct thy son, and labour about him, lest his lewd behaviour be an offence to thee. |
15 La sanità dell'anima che consiste nella santità della giustizia, vai più dell'oro e dell'argento e un corpo robusto vai più d'immense ricchezze. | 15 Better is a poor man who is sound, and strong of constitution, than a rich man who is weak and afflicted with evils. |
16 Non c'è ricchezza maggiore della sanità del corpo, nè piacere maggiore della gioia del cuore. | 16 Health of the soul in holiness of justice, is better then all gold and silver: and a sound body, than immense revenues. |
17 E' preferibile la morte ad una vita amara, e l'eterno riposo alla sofferenza continua. | 17 There is no riches above the riches of the health of the body: and there is no pleasure above the joy of the heart. |
18 Beni riposti in bocca chiusa sono come apparecchiate vivande poste in torno ad un sepolcro. | 18 Better is death than a bitter life: and everlasting rest, than continual sickness. |
19 Che giovano le libazioni all'idolo? Non può nè mangiare, nè sentire l'odore. | 19 Good things that are hidden in a mouth that is shut, are as masses of meat set about a grave. |
20 Così avviene a chi è perseguitato dal Signore e porta la mercede della sua iniquità. | 20 What good shall an offering do to an idol? for it can neither eat, nor smell: |
21 Vedendo cogli occhi geme, e sospira come un eunuco che abbraccia una vergine. | 21 So is he that is persecuted by the Lord, bearing the reward of his iniquity: |
22 Non t'abbandonare alla tristezza, e non t'affliggere coi tuoi pensieri. | 22 He seeth with his eyes, and groaneth, as an eunuch embracing a virgin, and sighing. |
23 La giocondità del cuore è la vita dell'uomo, è un tesoro inesauribile di sanità, l'allegrezza dell'uomo dà la lunga vita. | 23 Give not up thy soul to sadness, and afflict not thyself in thy own counsel. |
24 Abbi pietà della tua anima, per piacere a Dio sii continente, raccogli il tuo cuore nella santità di Dio e caccia lungi da te la tristezza. | 24 The joyfulness of the heart, is the life of a man, and a never failing treasure of holiness: and the joy of a man is length of life. |
25 Perchè la tristezza ne ha fatti morir molti, e non serve a nulla. | 25 Have pity on thy own soul, pleasing God, and contain thyself: gather up thy heart in his holiness: and drive away sadness far from thee. |
26 L'invidia e l'ira abbreviano la vita, e i pensieri fan diventar vecchi avanti tempo. | 26 For sadness hath killed many, and there is no profit in it. |
27 Il cuore sereno e buono è in banchetti e i suoi banchetti son preparati con diligenza. | 27 Envy and anger shorten a man's days, and pensiveness will bring old age before the time. |
