1 When the Philistines captured the ark of God, they carried it from Ebenezer to Ashdod;	1 Les Philistins avaient donc capturé l’Arche de Dieu, ils la transportèrent d’Ében-Ha-Ézer à Ashdod.
2 then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon and set it up beside Dagon.	2 Ils prirent l’Arche de Dieu et la placèrent dans le temple de Dagon à côté de la statue de Dagon.
3 And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the LORD. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place.	3 Le lendemain, lorsque les habitants d’Ashdod se levèrent, tôt le matin, et vinrent au temple de Dagon, ils virent Dagon par terre: il était tombé sur sa face devant l’Arche de Yahvé. Ils relevèrent Dagon et le remirent à sa place.
4 But when they rose early on the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the LORD, and the head of Dagon and both his hands were lying cut off upon the threshold; only the trunk of Dagon was left to him.	4 Le lendemain de bon matin, ils se levèrent et, cette fois encore, Dagon était par terre, sur le nez, devant l’Arche de Yahvé. Le tronc de Dagon était resté en place, mais la tête et les deux mains lui manquaient et gisaient sur le seuil;
5 This is why the priests of Dagon and all who enter the house of Dagon do not tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.	5 c’est d’ailleurs pour cela que les prêtres de Dagon et tous ceux qui entrent dans le temple de Dagon à Ashdod, encore aujourd’hui, ne foulent pas de leurs pieds le seuil de Dagon.
6 The hand of the LORD was heavy upon the people of Ashdod, and he terrified and afflicted them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory.	6 La main de Yahvé s’abattit sur les habitants d’Ashdod, il les tourmenta et envoya des tumeurs aussi bien sur Ashdod que sur ses environs.
7 And when the men of Ashdod saw how things were, they said, "The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us; for his hand is heavy upon us and upon Dagon our god."	7 Lorsque les habitants d’Ashdod virent ce qui leur arrivait, ils dirent: “Il ne faut pas que l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël reste chez nous, car il a eu la main lourde avec nous et notre Dieu Dagon.”
8 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, "What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?" They answered, "Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to Gath." So they brought the ark of the God of Israel there.	8 Ils firent donc avertir tous les princes des Philistins et les réunirent chez eux. Ils leur dirent: “Qu’allons-nous faire de l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël?” Les autres répondirent: “L’Arche du Dieu d’Israël ira à Gat.” On emmena donc l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël.
9 But after they had brought it around, the hand of the LORD was against the city, causing a very great panic, and he afflicted the men of the city, both young and old, so that tumors broke out upon them.	9 Or, dès qu’on l’eut amenée, la main de Yahvé se fit pesante sur la ville: ce fut une grande panique. Il frappa les habitants, du plus petit jusqu’au plus grand, et il leur sortit des tumeurs.
10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But when the ark of God came to Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, "They have brought around to us the ark of the God of Israel to slay us and our people."	10 Ils renvoyèrent donc l’Arche de Dieu à Ékron, mais lorsque l’Arche de Dieu arriva à Ékron, les habitants de la ville s’écrièrent: “Ils nous ont amené l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël pour nous faire périr, nous et notre peuple!”
11 They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, "Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, that it may not slay us and our people." For there was a deathly panic throughout the whole city. The hand of God was very heavy there;	11 On rassembla donc tous les princes des Philistins: “Renvoyez l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël, dirent-ils, qu’elle retourne d’où elle vient. Sinon nous allons mourir, nous et notre peuple.” Il y avait en effet une terrible panique dans toute la ville, tellement la main de Dieu s’était faite pesante.
12 the men who did not die were stricken with tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.	12 Ceux qui ne mouraient pas étaient frappés de tumeurs, et une grande lamentation montait de la ville jusqu’au ciel.
