1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior, but he was the son of a harlot. Gilead was the father of Jephthah.	1 Jiftach, der Gileaditer, war ein tapferer Held; er war der Sohn einer Dirne und Gilead war sein Vater.
2 And Gilead's wife also bore him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they thrust Jephthah out, and said to him, "You shall not inherit in our father's house; for you are the son of another woman."	2 Auch Gileads Ehefrau gebar ihm Söhne. Als nun die Söhne der Ehefrau herangewachsen waren, jagten sie Jiftach fort und sagten zu ihm: Du sollst im Haus unseres Vaters nicht erben; denn du bist der Sohn einer anderen Frau.
3 Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and worthless fellows collected round Jephthah, and went raiding with him.	3 Da floh Jiftach vor seinen Brüdern. Er ließ sich im Land Tob nieder, und Männer, die nichts zu verlieren hatten, scharten sich um ihn und zogen mit ihm (zu Streifzügen) aus.
4 After a time the Ammonites made war against Israel.	4 Nach einiger Zeit begannen die Ammoniter Krieg mit Israel.
5 And when the Ammonites made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to bring Jephthah from the land of Tob;	5 Als nun die Ammoniter mit Israel Krieg begannen, machten sich die Ältesten Gileads auf den Weg, um Jiftach aus dem Land Tob zu holen.
6 and they said to Jephthah, "Come and be our leader, that we may fight with the Ammonites."	6 Sie sagten zu Jiftach: Komm, sei unser Anführer, dann können wir gegen die Ammoniter kämpfen.
7 But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "Did you not hate me, and drive me out of my father's house? Why have you come to me now when you are in trouble?"	7 Jiftach erwiderte den Ältesten Gileads: Habt ihr mich nicht gehasst und aus dem Haus meines Vaters verjagt? Warum kommt ihr jetzt zu mir, da ihr in Bedrängnis seid?
8 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "That is why we have turned to you now, that you may go with us and fight with the Ammonites, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead."	8 Die Ältesten Gileads antworteten Jiftach: Eben darum haben wir uns jetzt dir wieder zugewandt. Du sollst mit uns gehen und gegen die Ammoniter kämpfen; du sollst unser Oberhaupt und der Anführer aller Bewohner Gileads werden.
9 Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "If you bring me home again to fight with the Ammonites, and the LORD gives them over to me, I will be your head."	9 Jiftach entgegnete den Ältesten Gileads: Wenn ihr mich zum Kampf gegen die Ammoniter zurückholt und der Herr sie vor meinen Augen preisgibt, werde ich dann wirklich euer Oberhaupt sein?
10 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "The LORD will be witness between us; we will surely do as you say."	10 Die Ältesten Gileads antworteten Jiftach: Der Herr soll unser Zeuge sein: Wirklich, so wie du es eben gesagt hast, so werden wir es machen.
11 So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and leader over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD at Mizpah.	11 Daraufhin ging Jiftach mit den Ältesten Gileads und die Leute machten ihn zu ihrem Oberhaupt und Anführer. Jiftach aber brachte in Mizpa alle seine Angelegenheiten vor den Herrn.
12 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites and said, "What have you against me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?"	12 Danach schickte Jiftach Boten zum König der Ammoniter und ließ ihn fragen: Was haben wir gegeneinander, dass du herangerückt bist, um in meinem Land Krieg zu führen?
13 And the king of the Ammonites answered the messengers of Jephthah, "Because Israel on coming from Egypt took away my land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; now therefore restore it peaceably."	13 Der König der Ammoniter antwortete den Boten Jiftachs: Israel hat mir mein Land zwischen dem Arnon und dem Jabbok, bis hin zum Jordan, weggenommen, als es aus Ägypten heraufzog. Gib es jetzt freiwillig wieder zurück!
14 And Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the Ammonites	14 Darauf schickte Jiftach noch einmal Boten zum König der Ammoniter
15 and said to him, "Thus says Jephthah: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites,	15 und ließ ihm sagen: So spricht Jiftach: Israel hat das Land Moabs und das Land der Ammoniter nicht weggenommen.
16 but when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh.	16 Als Israel aus Ägypten heraufzog, wanderte es durch die Wüste bis zum Schilfmeer und kam nach Kadesch.
17 Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, 'Let us pass, we pray, through your land'; but the king of Edom would not listen. And they sent also to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel remained at Kadesh.	17 Da schickte Israel Boten zum König von Edom und ließ ihm sagen: Ich möchte durch dein Land ziehen. Aber der König von Edom hörte nicht darauf. Auch zum König von Moab schickten sie, aber auch er wollte nicht (hören). Deshalb blieb Israel in Kadesch.
18 Then they journeyed through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and arrived on the east side of the land of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon; but they did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the boundary of Moab.	18 Es zog dann durch die Wüste, umging das Land Edoms und das Land Moabs und kam so in das Gebiet östlich vom Land Moabs. Sie schlugen jenseits des Arnon ihr Lager auf, kamen also gar nicht in das Gebiet Moabs; denn der Arnon ist die Grenze Moabs.
19 Israel then sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, 'Let us pass, we pray, through your land to our country.'	19 Dann sandte Israel Boten zu Sihon, dem König der Amoriter, dem König von Heschbon, und ließ ihm sagen: Wir möchten durch dein Gebiet in unser Land ziehen.
20 But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory; so Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped at Jahaz, and fought with Israel.	20 Sihon aber glaubte nicht, dass Israel nur durch sein Gebiet durchziehen wollte. Er sammelte daher seine Männer, schlug in Jahaz sein Lager auf und eröffnete den Kampf gegen Israel.
21 And the LORD, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them; so Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites, who inhabited that country.	21 Der Herr, der Gott Israels, aber gab Sihon und alle seine Männer in die Gewalt Israels. Israel schlug sie und eroberte das ganze Land, das die Amoriter bewohnten.
22 And they took possession of all the territory of the Amorites from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan.	22 So nahmen sie das ganze Land der Amoriter vom Arnon bis zum Jabbok und von der Wüste bis zum Jordan in Besitz.
23 So then the LORD, the God of Israel, dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel; and are you to take possession of them?	23 Der Herr, der Gott Israels, hat also die Amoriter vor den Augen seines Volkes Israel vertrieben. Und du willst es nun aus seinem Besitz vertreiben?
24 Will you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? And all that the LORD our God has dispossessed before us, we will possess.	24 Ist es nicht so: Wen Kemosch, dein Gott, vertreibt, dessen Besitz nimmst du, und wen immer der Herr, unser Gott, vor unseren Augen vertreibt, dessen Besitz nehmen wir.
25 Now are you any better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever go to war with them?	25 Bist du denn wirklich besser als der Moabiterkönig Balak, der Sohn Zippors? Hat er denn mit Israel einen Streit oder einen Krieg angefangen?
26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, three hundred years, why did you not recover them within that time?	26 Israel saß dreihundert Jahre lang in Heschbon und seinen Tochterstädten, in Aroër und seinen Tochterstädten und in allen Städten, die zu beiden Seiten des Arnon liegen. Warum habt ihr diese Städte nicht in jener Zeit an euch gerissen?
27 I therefore have not sinned against you, and you do me wrong by making war on me; the LORD, the Judge, decide this day between the people of Israel and the people of Ammon."	27 Was mich betrifft, so habe ich dir kein Unrecht getan, aber du willst mir Böses antun, indem du den Kampf gegen mich eröffnest. Der Herr soll unser Richter sein; er möge heute im Streit zwischen den Israeliten und den Ammonitern entscheiden.
28 But the king of the Ammonites did not heed the message of Jephthah which he sent to him.	28 Doch der König der Ammoniter hörte nicht auf die Botschaft, die ihm Jiftach schickte.
29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed on to Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed on to the Ammonites.	29 Da kam der Geist des Herrn über Jiftach und Jiftach zog durch Gilead und Manasse nach Mizpa in Gilead und von Mizpa in Gilead zog er gegen die Ammoniter.
30 And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD, and said, "If thou wilt give the Ammonites into my hand,	30 Jiftach legte dem Herrn ein Gelübde ab und sagte: Wenn du die Ammoniter wirklich in meine Gewalt gibst
31 then whoever comes forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return victorious from the Ammonites, shall be the LORDs, and I will offer him up for a burnt offering."	31 und wenn ich wohlbehalten von den Ammonitern zurückkehre, dann soll, was immer mir (als Erstes) aus der Tür meines Hauses entgegenkommt, dem Herrn gehören und ich will es ihm als Brandopfer darbringen.
32 So Jephthah crossed over to the Ammonites to fight against them; and the LORD gave them into his hand.	32 Darauf zog Jiftach gegen die Ammoniter in den Kampf und der Herr gab sie in seine Gewalt.
33 And he smote them from Aroer to the neighborhood of Minnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel-keramim, with a very great slaughter. So the Ammonites were subdued before the people of Israel.	33 Er schlug sie im ganzen Gebiet zwischen Aroër und Minnit bis hin nach Abel-Keramim vernichtend (und nahm) zwanzig Städte (ein). So wurden die Ammoniter vor den Augen der Israeliten gedemütigt.
34 Then Jephthah came to his home at Mizpah; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.	34 Als Jiftach nun nach Mizpa zu seinem Haus zurückkehrte, da kam ihm seine Tochter entgegen; sie tanzte zur Pauke. Sie war sein einziges Kind; er hatte weder einen Sohn noch eine andere Tochter.
35 And when he saw her, he rent his clothes, and said, "Alas, my daughter! you have brought me very low, and you have become the cause of great trouble to me; for I have opened my mouth to the LORD, and I cannot take back my vow."	35 Als er sie sah, zerriss er seine Kleider und sagte: Weh, meine Tochter! Du machst mich niedergeschlagen und stürzt mich ins Unglück. Ich habe dem Herrn mit eigenem Mund etwas versprochen und kann nun nicht mehr zurück.
36 And she said to him, "My father, if you have opened your mouth to the LORD, do to me according to what has gone forth from your mouth, now that the LORD has avenged you on your enemies, on the Ammonites."	36 Sie erwiderte ihm: Mein Vater, wenn du dem Herrn mit eigenem Mund etwas versprochen hast, dann tu mit mir, was du versprochen hast, nachdem dir der Herr Rache an deinen Feinden, den Ammonitern, verschafft hat.
37 And she said to her father, "Let this thing be done for me; let me alone two months, that I may go and wander on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions."	37 Und sie sagte zu ihrem Vater: Nur das eine möge mir gewährt werden: Lass mir noch zwei Monate Zeit, damit ich in die Berge gehe und zusammen mit meinen Freundinnen meine Jugend beweine.
38 And he said, "Go." And he sent her away for two months; and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.	38 Er entgegnete: Geh nur!, und ließ sie für zwei Monate fort. Sie aber ging mit ihren Freundinnen hin und beweinte ihre Jugend in den Bergen.
39 And at the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had made. She had never known a man. And it became a custom in Israel	39 Als zwei Monate zu Ende waren, kehrte sie zu ihrem Vater zurück und er tat mit ihr, was er gelobt hatte; sie aber hatte noch mit keinem Mann Verkehr gehabt. So wurde es Brauch in Israel,
40 that the daughters of Israel went year by year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year.	40 dass Jahr für Jahr die Töchter Israels (in die Berge) gehen und die Tochter des Gileaditers Jiftach beklagen, vier Tage lang, jedes Jahr.
