1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior, but he was the son of a harlot. Gilead was the father of Jephthah.	1 Jephté, le Galaadite, était un vaillant guerrier. Il était fils d'une prostituée. Et c'est Galaad qui avaitengendré Jephté.
2 And Gilead's wife also bore him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they thrust Jephthah out, and said to him, "You shall not inherit in our father's house; for you are the son of another woman."	2 Mais la femme de Galaad lui enfanta aussi des fils, et les fils de cette femme, ayant grandi,chassèrent Jephté en lui disant: "Tu n'auras pas de part à l'héritage de notre père, car tu es le fils d'une femmeétrangère."
3 Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and worthless fellows collected round Jephthah, and went raiding with him.	3 Jephté s'enfuit loin de ses frères et s'établit dans le pays de Tob. Il se forma autour de lui une bandede gens de rien qui faisaient campagne avec lui.
4 After a time the Ammonites made war against Israel.	4 Or, à quelque temps de là, les Ammonites s'en vinrent combattre Israël.
5 And when the Ammonites made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to bring Jephthah from the land of Tob;	5 Et lorsque les Ammonites eurent attaqué Israël, les anciens de Galaad allèrent chercher Jephté aupays de Tob.
6 and they said to Jephthah, "Come and be our leader, that we may fight with the Ammonites."	6 "Viens, lui dirent-ils, sois notre commandant, afin que nous combattions les Ammonites."
7 But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "Did you not hate me, and drive me out of my father's house? Why have you come to me now when you are in trouble?"	7 Mais Jephté répondit aux anciens de Galaad: "N'est-ce pas vous qui m'avez pris en haine et chassé dela maison de mon père? Pourquoi venez-vous à moi, maintenant que vous êtes dans la détresse?"
8 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "That is why we have turned to you now, that you may go with us and fight with the Ammonites, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead."	8 Les anciens de Galaad répliquèrent à Jephté: "C'est pour cela que maintenant nous sommes revenus àtoi. Viens avec nous, tu combattras les Ammonites et tu seras notre chef, celui de tous les habitants de Galaad."
9 Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "If you bring me home again to fight with the Ammonites, and the LORD gives them over to me, I will be your head."	9 Jephté répondit aux anciens de Galaad: "Si vous me faites revenir pour combattre les Ammonites etque Yahvé les livre à ma merci, alors je serai votre chef" --
10 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "The LORD will be witness between us; we will surely do as you say."	10 "Que Yahvé soit témoin entre nous, répondirent à Jephté les anciens de Galaad, si nous ne faisonspas comme tu l'as dit!"
11 So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and leader over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD at Mizpah.	11 Jephté partit donc avec les anciens de Galaad. Le peuple le mit à sa tête comme chef etcommandant; et Jephté répéta toutes ses conditions à Miçpa, en présence de Yahvé.
12 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites and said, "What have you against me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?"	12 Jephté envoya des messagers au roi des Ammonites pour lui dire: "Qu'y a-t-il donc entre toi et moipour que tu sois venu faire la guerre à mon pays?"
13 And the king of the Ammonites answered the messengers of Jephthah, "Because Israel on coming from Egypt took away my land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; now therefore restore it peaceably."	13 Le roi des Ammonites répondit aux messagers de Jephté: "C'est parce qu'Israël, au temps où ilmontait d'Egypte, s'est emparé de mon pays, depuis l'Arnon jusqu'au Yabboq et au Jourdain. Rends-lemaintenant de bon gré!"
14 And Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the Ammonites	14 Jephté envoya de nouveau des messagers au roi des Ammonites,
15 and said to him, "Thus says Jephthah: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites,	15 et il lui dit: "Ainsi parle Jephté. Israël ne s'est emparé ni du pays de Moab, ni de celui desAmmonites.
16 but when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh.	16 Quand il est monté d'Egypte, Israël a marché dans le désert jusqu'à la mer des Roseaux et il estparvenu à Cadès.
17 Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, 'Let us pass, we pray, through your land'; but the king of Edom would not listen. And they sent also to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel remained at Kadesh.	17 Alors Israël a envoyé des messagers au roi d'Edom pour lui dire: Laisse-moi, je te prie, traverser tonpays! mais le roi d'Edom ne voulut rien entendre. Il en envoya aussi au roi de Moab, qui refusa, et Israëldemeura à Cadès,
18 Then they journeyed through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and arrived on the east side of the land of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon; but they did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the boundary of Moab.	18 puis, s'avançant dans le désert, il contourna le pays d'Edom et celui de Moab et parvint à l'orient dupays de Moab. Le peuple campa au-delà de l'Arnon, et il n'entra pas dans le territoire de Moab, car l'Arnon est lafrontière de Moab.
19 Israel then sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, 'Let us pass, we pray, through your land to our country.'	19 Israël envoya ensuite des messagers à Sihôn, roi des Amorites, qui régnait à Heshbôn, et Israël luifit dire: Laisse-moi, je te prie, traverser ton pays jusqu'à ma destination.
20 But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory; so Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped at Jahaz, and fought with Israel.	20 Mais Sihôn refusa à Israël le passage sur son territoire, il rassembla toute son armée, qui campa àYahaç, et il engagea le combat contre Israël.
21 And the LORD, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them; so Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites, who inhabited that country.	21 Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël, livra Sihôn et toute son armée aux mains d'Israël qui les défit, et Israël pritpossession de tout le pays des Amorites qui habitaient cette contrée.
22 And they took possession of all the territory of the Amorites from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan.	22 Il fut ainsi en possession de tout le pays des Amorites, depuis l'Arnon jusqu'au Yabboq et depuis ledésert jusqu'au Jourdain.
23 So then the LORD, the God of Israel, dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel; and are you to take possession of them?	23 Et maintenant que Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël, a dépossédé les Amorites devant son peuple Israël, toi, tunous déposséderais?
24 Will you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? And all that the LORD our God has dispossessed before us, we will possess.	24 Est-ce que tu ne possèdes pas tout ce que Kemosh, ton dieu, a mis en ta possession? De même toutce que Yahvé, notre Dieu, a enlevé à ses possesseurs, nous le possédons!
25 Now are you any better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever go to war with them?	25 Vaudrais-tu donc mieux que Balaq, fils de Cippor, roi de Moab? Est-il entré en contestation avecIsraël? Lui a-t-il fait la guerre?
26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, three hundred years, why did you not recover them within that time?	26 Quand Israël s'est établi à Heshbôn et dans ses dépendances, à Aroër et dans ses dépendances, ainsique dans toutes les villes qui sont sur les rives de l'Arnon (300 ans), pourquoi ne les avez-vous pas reprises à cemoment-là?
27 I therefore have not sinned against you, and you do me wrong by making war on me; the LORD, the Judge, decide this day between the people of Israel and the people of Ammon."	27 Pour moi, je n'ai pas péché contre toi, mais toi, tu agis mal envers moi en me faisant la guerre. QueYahvé, le Juge, juge aujourd'hui entre les enfants d'Israël et le roi des Ammonites."
28 But the king of the Ammonites did not heed the message of Jephthah which he sent to him.	28 Mais le roi des Ammonites n'écouta pas les paroles que Jephté lui avait fait transmettre.
29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed on to Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed on to the Ammonites.	29 L'esprit de Yahvé fut sur Jephté, qui parcourut Galaad et Manassé, passa par Miçpé de Galaad et, deMiçpé de Galaad, passa chez les Ammonites.
30 And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD, and said, "If thou wilt give the Ammonites into my hand,	30 Et Jephté fit un voeu à Yahvé: "Si tu livres entre mes mains les Ammonites,
31 then whoever comes forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return victorious from the Ammonites, shall be the LORDs, and I will offer him up for a burnt offering."	31 celui qui sortira le premier des portes de ma maison pour venir à ma rencontre quand je reviendraivainqueur du combat contre les Ammonites, celui-là appartiendra à Yahvé, et je l'offrirai en holocauste."
32 So Jephthah crossed over to the Ammonites to fight against them; and the LORD gave them into his hand.	32 Jephté passa chez les Ammonites pour les attaquer et Yahvé les livra entre ses mains.
33 And he smote them from Aroer to the neighborhood of Minnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel-keramim, with a very great slaughter. So the Ammonites were subdued before the people of Israel.	33 Il les battit depuis Aroër jusque vers Minnit (vingt villes), et jusqu'à Abel-Keramim. Ce fut une trèsgrande défaite; et les Ammonites furent abaissés devant les Israélites.
34 Then Jephthah came to his home at Mizpah; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.	34 Lorsque Jephté revint à Miçpé, à sa maison, voici que sa fille sortit à sa rencontre en dansant au sondes tambourins. C'était son unique enfant. En dehors d'elle il n'avait ni fils, ni fille.
35 And when he saw her, he rent his clothes, and said, "Alas, my daughter! you have brought me very low, and you have become the cause of great trouble to me; for I have opened my mouth to the LORD, and I cannot take back my vow."	35 Dès qu'il l'eut aperçue, il déchira ses vêtements et s'écria: "Ah! ma fille, vraiment tu m'accables! Tues de ceux qui font mon malheur! Je me suis engagé, moi, devant Yahvé, et ne puis revenir en arrière."
36 And she said to him, "My father, if you have opened your mouth to the LORD, do to me according to what has gone forth from your mouth, now that the LORD has avenged you on your enemies, on the Ammonites."	36 Elle lui répondit: "Mon père, tu t'es engagé envers Yahvé, traite-moi selon l'engagement que tu aspris, puisque Yahvé t'a accordé de te venger de tes ennemis, les Ammonites."
37 And she said to her father, "Let this thing be done for me; let me alone two months, that I may go and wander on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions."	37 Puis elle dit à son père: "Que ceci me soit accordé! Laisse-moi libre pendant deux mois. Je m'en iraierrer sur les montagnes et, avec mes compagnes, je pleurerai sur ma virginité" --
38 And he said, "Go." And he sent her away for two months; and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.	38 "Va", lui dit-il, et il la laissa partir pour deux mois. Elle s'en alla donc, elle et ses compagnes, et ellepleura sa virginité sur les montagnes.
39 And at the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had made. She had never known a man. And it became a custom in Israel	39 Les deux mois écoulés, elle revint vers son père et il accomplit sur elle le voeu qu'il avait prononcé.Elle n'avait pas connu d'homme. Et de là vient cette coutume en Israël:
40 that the daughters of Israel went year by year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year.	40 d'année en année les filles d'Israël s'en vont se lamenter quatre jours par an sur la fille de Jephté leGalaadite.
