1 After the death of Joshua the people of Israel inquired of the LORD, "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?"	1 Dopo la morte di Giosuè gli Israeliti consultarono il Signore per sapere chi di loro dovesse muovere a combattere contro i Cananei.
2 The LORD said, "Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand."	2 Il Signore rispose: "E' Giuda che muoverà per primo. Darò in suo potere la regione che assale".
3 And Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him.	3 Allora Giuda disse a suo fratello Simeone: "Vieni con me, e combatteremo insieme contro i Cananei nel territorio che mi è toccato in sorte; poi verrò anch'io insieme a te, nel territorio a te assegnato". Simeone andò con lui.
4 Then Judah went up and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they defeated ten thousand of them at Bezek.	4 Giuda si mosse e il Signore mise in suo potere Cananei e Perizziti: gli uomini di Giuda uccisero in Bezek diecimila nemici.
5 They came upon Adoni-bezek at Bezek, and fought against him, and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.	5 In Bezek essi trovarono il re di Bezek: lo assalirono sconfiggendo Cananei e Perizziti.
6 Adoni-bezek fled; but they pursued him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.	6 Il re di Bezek fuggì, ma lo inseguirono, lo catturarono e gli amputarono i pollici e gli alluci.
7 And Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and their great toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has requited me." And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.	7 Disse allora il re di Bezek: "Settanta re coi pollici e gli alluci tagliati raccoglievano gli avanzi sotto la mia tavola: come io ho fatto, così Dio mi ha reso". Fu portato a Gerusalemme e qui morì.
8 And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.	8 Quelli di Giuda avevano assalito Gerusalemme e, espugnatala, ne avevano passati gli abitanti a fil di spada; poi l'avevano data alle fiamme.
9 And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwelt in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland.	9 Poi quelli di Giuda si diressero verso sud a combattere contro i Cananei che abitavano la zona montagnosa, il Negheb e la Sefela.
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba); and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.	10 Marciarono contro i Cananei di Ebron, città che prima si chiamava Kiriat-Arba, e sconfissero Sesai, Achiman e Talmai.
11 From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher.	11 Da Ebron gli uomini di Giuda marciarono contro gli abitanti di Debir, città che prima si chiamava Kiriat-Sefer.
12 And Caleb said, "He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and takes it, I will give him Achsah my daughter as wife."	12 Caleb disse: "A colui che riuscirà a battere Kiriat-Sefer e a conquistarla, darò in sposa mia figlia Acsa".
13 And Othni-el the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.	13 Colui che conquistò Kiriat-Sefer fu Otniel, figlio di Kenaz, fratello minore di Caleb. Così Caleb gli dette in sposa sua figlia Acsa.
14 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field; and she alighted from her ass, and Caleb said to her, "What do you wish?"	14 Quando essa arrivò alla casa dello sposo, egli la convinse a chiedere a suo padre un campo. Essa, allora, scesa dall'asino, sospirò profondamente e Caleb le chiese che cosa avesse.
15 She said to him, "Give me a present; since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water." 16 And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad; and they went and settled with the people.	16 I discendenti di Obab il Kenita, suocero di Mosè, mossero dalla Città delle Palme insieme a quelli di Giuda, verso quella parte del deserto di Giuda che è nel Negheb di Arad. Poi continuarono la loro marcia e si stanziarono con gli Amaleciti.
17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called Hormah.	17 Giuda proseguì con suo fratello Simeone e sconfissero i Cananei che abitavano in Zefat. La città fu votata allo sterminio e per questo fu chiamata Corma.
18 Judah also took Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.	18 Giuda non riuscì a conquistare né Gaza col suo territorio, né Ascalon col suo territorio, né Accaron col suo territorio.
19 And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain, because they had chariots of iron.	19 Il Signore protesse invece Giuda nella conquista della zona montuosa: Giuda non riuscì a vincere gli abitanti della pianura, perché essi avevano carri di ferro.
20 And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said; and he drove out from it the three sons of Anak.	20 Ebron fu assegnata, come aveva detto Mosè, a Caleb, il quale ne cacciò i tre figli di Anak.
21 But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who dwelt in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have dwelt with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.	21 I Beniaminiti non cacciarono i Gebusei che abitavano Gerusalemme; così questi abitarono in Gerusalemme insieme ai Beniaminiti, come accade ancora ai nostri giorni.
22 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and the LORD was with them.	22 Quelli della tribù di Giuseppe si mossero anch'essi e marciarono contro Betel e il Signore fu con loro.
23 And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.)	23 Essi mandarono esploratori contro Betel, città che prima si chiamava Luz.
24 And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, "Pray, show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you."	24 Essi scorsero un uomo che usciva dalla città; gli dissero: "Mostraci la via per penetrare nella città e noi ti risparmieremo".
25 And he showed them the way into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go.	25 L'uomo indicò loro la via per penetrarvi. Allora quelli di Giuseppe passarono gli abitanti a fil di spada, ma risparmiarono quell'uomo e tutti i suoi parenti.
26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city, and called its name Luz; that is its name to this day.	26 Costui se ne andò nel paese degli Hittiti, dove costruì una città che chiamò Luz, nome che conserva anche oggi.
27 Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taa-nach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; but the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land.	27 Manasse non scacciò gli abitanti di Bet-Sean e delle città sue dipendenti, né quelli di Taanach e delle città sue dipendenti; né quelli di Dor e delle città sue dipendenti, né quelli di Ibleam e delle città sue dipendenti, né quelli di Meghiddo e delle città sue dipendenti; così i Cananei riuscirono a mantenersi in questa regione.
28 When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.	28 Ma poiché Israele era più forte di loro, li sottomise a pagare il tributo, pur non essendo riuscito a privarli della loro terra.
29 And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.	29 Neanche Efraim cacciò i Cananei che abitavano in Ghezer; e così in Ghezer i Cananei abitarono in mezzo ad Efraim.
30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to forced labor.	30 Neanche Zabulon cacciò gli abitanti di Kitron, né quelli di Naalol; così i Cananei, pur pagando il tributo, restarono in mezzo a Zabulon.
31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob;	31 Neanche Aser cacciò gli abitanti di Acco, né quelli di Sidone, di Aclab, di Aczib, di Elba, di Afik, di Recob.
32 but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.	32 Così la gente di Aser abitò in mezzo ai Cananei della regione, perché non li cacciò dalla loro terra.
33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.	33 Neanche Neftali cacciò gli abitanti di Bet-Semes, né quelli di Bet-Anat e così abitò in mezzo ai Cananei della regione, per quanto sia quelli di Bet-Semes che quelli di Bet-Anat gli pagassero il tributo.
34 The Amorites pressed the Danites back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain;	34 In quanto alla gente di Dan, essa fu stretta nella zona montuosa dagli Amorrei, che le impedirono di scendere nella pianura.
35 the Amorites persisted in dwelling in Har-heres, in Aijalon, and in Sha-albim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily upon them, and they became subject to forced labor.	35 Così gli Amorrei riuscirono a tenersi in Ar-Cheres, in Aialon e in Saalbim, e solo quando la casa di Giuseppe divenne più potente, essi furono sottoposti a tributo.
36 And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.	36 Il territorio degli Amorrei si estendeva dalla salita di Akrabbim, da Sela in là.
