1 After the death of Joshua the people of Israel inquired of the LORD, "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?"	1 Nach Josuas Tode aber fragten die Israeliten beim HERRN an: »Wer von uns soll zuerst gegen die Kanaanäer hinaufziehen, um mit ihnen zu kämpfen?«
2 The LORD said, "Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand."	2 Der HERR antwortete: »Juda soll hinaufziehen; hiermit gebe ich das Land in seine Gewalt.«
3 And Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him.	3 Da richtete Juda die Aufforderung an seinen Bruderstamm Simeon: »Ziehe mit mir in das durchs Los mir zugeteilte Gebiet hinauf und laß uns die Kanaanäer gemeinsam bekriegen; dann will auch ich mit dir in deinen Losanteil ziehen.« So zog denn Simeon mit ihm.
4 Then Judah went up and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they defeated ten thousand of them at Bezek.	4 Als nun die Judäer hinaufgezogen waren, gab der HERR die Kanaanäer und Pherissiter in ihre Gewalt: sie schlugen sie bei Besek, zehntausend Mann.
5 They came upon Adoni-bezek at Bezek, and fought against him, and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.	5 Als sie dann bei Besek auf Adoni-Besek stießen, griffen sie ihn an und besiegten die Kanaanäer und Pherissiter.
6 Adoni-bezek fled; but they pursued him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.	6 Als dann Adoni-Besek die Flucht ergriff, verfolgten sie ihn, nahmen ihn gefangen und hieben ihm die Daumen an seinen Händen und die beiden großen Zehen ab.
7 And Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and their great toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has requited me." And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.	7 Da sagte Adoni-Besek: »Siebzig Könige, denen die Daumen an ihren Händen und die großen Zehen abgehauen waren, haben Brocken (oder: ihr Brot) unter meinem Tische auflesen müssen: wie ich getan habe, so hat Gott mir wieder vergolten.« Man brachte ihn dann nach Jerusalem, wo er starb. –
8 And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.	8 Die Judäer belagerten hierauf Jerusalem, eroberten es, machten die Einwohnerschaft mit dem Schwert nieder und steckten die Stadt in Brand.
9 And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwelt in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland.	9 Darauf zogen die Judäer hinab, um die Kanaanäer zu bekriegen, die im Gebirge sowie im Südland und in der Niederung wohnten.
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba); and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.	10 Die Judäer zogen also gegen die Kanaanäer, die in Hebron wohnten – Hebron hieß aber früher Kirjath-Arba –, und besiegten den Sesai, den Ahiman und den Thalmai.
11 From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher.	11 Von dort zog er (d.h. Kaleb) gegen die Einwohner von Debir – Debir hieß aber früher Kirjath-Sepher.
12 And Caleb said, "He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and takes it, I will give him Achsah my daughter as wife."	12 Da machte Kaleb bekannt: »Wer Kirjath-Sepher bezwingt und erobert, dem gebe ich meine Tochter Achsa zur Frau.«
13 And Othni-el the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.	13 Als nun Othniel, der Sohn des Kenas, der jüngere Bruder Kalebs, die Stadt eroberte, gab er ihm seine Tochter Achsa zur Frau.
14 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field; and she alighted from her ass, and Caleb said to her, "What do you wish?"	14 Als sie ihm nun zugeführt wurde, überredete sie ihn, ein Stück Ackerland von ihrem Vater erbitten zu dürfen; und als sie dann vom Esel herabsprang und Kaleb sie fragte: »Was wünschest du?«,
15 She said to him, "Give me a present; since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water." And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.	15 antwortete sie ihm: »Gib mir doch ein Abschiedsgeschenk! Denn da du mich in das Südland verheiratet hast, so gib mir auch Wasserquellen mit!« Da gab Kaleb ihr die oberen und die unteren Quellen.
16 And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad; and they went and settled with the people.	16 Auch die Söhne (= Nachkommen) des Keniters (Hobab), des Schwagers Moses, waren mit den Judäern aus der Palmenstadt in die Steppe Juda hinaufgezogen, die im Süden (oder: beim Südland) von Arad liegt; sie machten sich dann auf und siedelten sich unter dem Volke (d.h. unter den Amalekitern) an.
17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called Hormah.	17 Darauf zogen die Judäer mit ihrem Bruderstamm Simeon zu Felde; sie besiegten die Kanaanäer, die in Zephath wohnten, vollstreckten den Bann an der Stadt und gaben ihr den Namen Horma (d.h. Bann; vgl. 4.Mose 21,3). –
18 Judah also took Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.	18 Doch konnten die Judäer Gaza mit dem zugehörigen Gebiete sowie Askalon und sein Gebiet und Ekron nebst seinem Gebiet nicht erobern (?);
19 And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain, because they had chariots of iron.	19 doch war der HERR mit den Judäern, so daß sie das Bergland in Besitz nahmen; dagegen die Bewohner der Niederung vermochten sie nicht zu vertreiben, weil diese eiserne Streitwagen hatten.
20 And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said; and he drove out from it the three sons of Anak.	20 Hebron aber gaben sie, wie Mose bestimmt hatte, dem Kaleb, und dieser vertrieb dann von dort die drei Enaksöhne.
21 But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who dwelt in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have dwelt with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.	21 Aber die Jebusiter, die Bewohner Jerusalems, konnten die Benjaminiten nicht vertreiben; daher sind die Jebusiter neben den Benjaminiten in Jerusalem wohnen geblieben bis auf den heutigen Tag.
22 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and the LORD was with them.	22 Die vom Hause Joseph aber zogen ebenfalls in den Streit, und zwar gegen Bethel, und der HERR war mit ihnen.
23 And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.)	23 Das Haus Joseph ließ nämlich Bethel auskundschaften – die Stadt hieß vormals Lus –;
24 And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, "Pray, show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you."	24 und als die Späher einen Mann aus der Stadt herauskommen sahen, sagten sie zu ihm: »Zeige uns doch einen Zugang in die Stadt, wir wollen dich auch dafür belohnen.«
25 And he showed them the way into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go.	25 Als er ihnen nun eine Stelle gezeigt hatte, wo man in die Stadt eindringen konnte, eroberten sie den Ort und machten alle Einwohner mit dem Schwert nieder; den Mann aber und seine ganze Familie ließen sie frei abziehen.
26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city, and called its name Luz; that is its name to this day.	26 Der Mann begab sich dann in das Land der Hethiter und gründete dort eine Stadt, die er Lus nannte; so heißt der Ort noch heutigen Tages.
27 Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taa-nach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; but the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land.	27 Der Stamm Manasse aber konnte die Bewohner von Beth-Sean nebst den zugehörigen Ortschaften nicht vertreiben, ebensowenig die Bewohner von Thaanach, von Dor, von Jibleam und von Megiddo nebst den zu ihnen gehörenden Ortschaften; daher gelang es den Kanaanäern, in dieser Gegend wohnen zu bleiben.
28 When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.	28 Als später aber die Israeliten erstarkt waren, machten sie die Kanaanäer fronpflichtig, ohne sie jedoch völlig vertreiben zu können. –
29 And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.	29 Ebensowenig vertrieb der Stamm Ephraim die Kanaanäer, die in Geser wohnten; daher blieben die Kanaanäer mitten unter ihnen in Geser wohnen. –
30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to forced labor.	30 Der Stamm Sebulon vertrieb nicht die Bewohner von Kitron und auch nicht die Bewohner von Nahalol; daher blieben die Kanaanäer mitten unter ihnen wohnen, wurden aber fronpflichtig. –
31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob;	31 Asser vertrieb nicht die Bewohner von Akko und die Bewohner von Sidon, sowie von Ahlab (Mahaleb?), von Achsib, von Helba, von Aphik und von Rehob;
32 but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.	32 daher blieben die Asseriten mitten unter den einheimischen Kanaanäern wohnen, denn sie hatten sie nicht vertreiben können. –
33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.	33 Der Stamm Naphthali vertrieb nicht die Bewohner von Beth-Semes und auch nicht die Bewohner von Beth-Anath. So blieb denn dieser Stamm mitten unter den einheimischen Kanaanäern wohnen; doch wurden die Bewohner von Beth-Semes und von Beth-Anath ihnen fronpflichtig. –
34 The Amorites pressed the Danites back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain;	34 Die Amoriter aber drängten den Stamm Dan ins Gebirge zurück und ließen ihn nicht in die Niederung herabkommen.
35 the Amorites persisted in dwelling in Har-heres, in Aijalon, and in Sha-albim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily upon them, and they became subject to forced labor.	35 So gelang es denn den Amoritern, in Har-Heres, in Ajjalon und in Saalbim wohnen zu bleiben; doch lag die Hand des Stammes Joseph immer schwerer auf ihnen, so daß sie schließlich fronpflichtig wurden. –
36 And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.	36 Das Gebiet der Amoriter (Edomiter?) aber erstreckte sich von der Skorpionenhöhe bis nach Sela hin und weiter hinauf.
