1 After the death of Joshua the people of Israel inquired of the LORD, "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?"	1 Or, après la mort de Josué, les Israélites consultèrent Yahvé en disant: "Qui de nous montera d'abord contreles Cananéens pour les combattre?"Juges1, 2 Et Yahvé répondit: "C'est Juda qui montera le premier; voici que je livre le pays entre ses mains."Juges1, 3 Alors Juda dit à Siméon son frère: "Monte avec moi dans le territoire que le sort m'a assigné, nousattaquerons les Cananéens et, à mon tour, je monterai avec toi dans ton territoire." Et Siméon marcha avec lui.
2 The LORD said, "Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand."
3 And Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him.
4 Then Judah went up and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they defeated ten thousand of them at Bezek.	4 Juda monta donc et Yahvé livra en leurs mains les Cananéens et les Perizzites, et, à Bézeq, ils défirent10.000 hommes.
5 They came upon Adoni-bezek at Bezek, and fought against him, and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.	5 Ayant rencontré à Bézeq Adoni-Bézeq, ils lui livrèrent bataille et défirent les Cananéens et lesPerizzites.
6 Adoni-bezek fled; but they pursued him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.	6 Adoni-Bézeq s'enfuit, mais ils le poursuivirent, le saisirent et lui coupèrent les pouces des mains et despieds.
7 And Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and their great toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has requited me." And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.	7 Adoni-Bézeq dit alors: "70 rois, avec les pouces des mains et des pieds coupés, ramassaient lesmiettes sous ma table. Comme j'ai fait, Dieu me rend." On l'emmena à Jérusalem et c'est là qu'il mourut.
8 And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.	8 (Les fils de Juda attaquèrent Jérusalem, ils la prirent, la passèrent au fil de l'épée et mirent le feu à laville.)
9 And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwelt in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland.	9 Après quoi, les fils de Juda descendirent pour combattre les Cananéens, qui habitaient la Montagne, leNégeb et le Bas-Pays.
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba); and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.	10 Puis Juda marcha contre les Cananéens qui habitaient Hébron -- le nom d'Hébron était autrefoisQiryat-Arba -- et il battit Shéshaï, Ahimân et Talmaï.
11 From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher.	11 De là, il marcha contre les habitants de Debir -- le nom de Debir était autrefois Qiryat-Séphèr.
12 And Caleb said, "He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and takes it, I will give him Achsah my daughter as wife."	12 Et Caleb dit: "Celui qui vaincra Qiryat-Séphèr et la prendra, je lui donnerai ma fille Aksa pourfemme."Juges1, 13 Celui qui la prit fut Otniel, fils de Qenaz, le frère cadet de Caleb, et celui-ci lui donna sa fille Aksapour femme.
13 And Othni-el the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.
14 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field; and she alighted from her ass, and Caleb said to her, "What do you wish?"	14 Lorsqu'elle arriva, il lui suggéra de demander à son père un champ. Alors elle sauta à bas de son âne,et Caleb lui demanda: "Que veux-tu?"
15 She said to him, "Give me a present; since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water." And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.	15 Elle lui répondit: "Accorde-moi une faveur. Puisque tu m'as reléguée au pays du Négeb, donne-moidonc des sources d'eau." Et Caleb lui donna les sources d'en haut et les sources d'en bas.
16 And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad; and they went and settled with the people.	16 Les fils de Hobab, le Qénite, beau-père de Moïse, montèrent de la ville des Palmiers avec les fils deJuda jusqu'au désert de Juda qui est dans le Négeb d'Arad, et ils vinrent habiter avec le peuple.
17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called Hormah.	17 Puis Juda s'en alla avec Siméon son frère. Ils battirent les Cananéens qui habitaient Cephat et lavouèrent à l'anathème. C'est pourquoi on donna à la ville le nom de Horma.
18 Judah also took Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.	18 Puis Juda s'empara de Gaza et de son territoire, d'Ascalon et de son territoire, d'Eqrôn et de sonterritoire.
19 And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain, because they had chariots of iron.	19 Et Yahvé fut avec Juda qui se rendit maître de la Montagne, mais il ne put déposséder les habitantsde la plaine, parce qu'ils avaient des chars de fer.
20 And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said; and he drove out from it the three sons of Anak.	20 Comme Moïse l'avait recommandé, on donna Hébron à Caleb, lequel en chassa les trois fils d'Anaq.
21 But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who dwelt in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have dwelt with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.	21 Quant aux Jébuséens qui habitaient Jérusalem, les fils de Benjamin ne les dépossédèrent pas, etjusqu'aujourd'hui les Jébuséens ont habité Jérusalem avec les fils de Benjamin.
22 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and the LORD was with them.	22 La maison de Joseph, elle aussi, monta à Béthel et Yahvé fut avec elle.
23 And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.)	23 La maison de Joseph fit faire une reconnaissance contre Béthel. (Le nom de la ville était autrefoisLuz.)
24 And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, "Pray, show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you."	24 Ceux qui étaient en observation virent un homme qui sortait de la ville. Ils lui dirent: "Indique-nouspar où l'on peut y entrer et nous te ferons grâce."
25 And he showed them the way into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go.	25 Il leur indiqua par où entrer dans la ville. Ils passèrent la ville au fil de l'épée, mais laissèrent allerl'homme avec tout son clan.
26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city, and called its name Luz; that is its name to this day.	26 Cet homme s'en alla au pays des Hittites et il bâtit une ville à laquelle il donna le nom de Luz. C'estle nom qu'elle porte encore aujourd'hui.
27 Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taa-nach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; but the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land.	27 Manassé ne déposséda pas Bet-Shéân et ses dépendances, ni Tanak et ses dépendances, ni leshabitants de Dor et de ses dépendances, ni les habitants de Yibleam et de ses dépendances, ni les habitants deMegiddo et de ses dépendances; les Cananéens persistèrent dans ce pays.
28 When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.	28 Cependant, quand Israël fut devenu plus fort, il soumit les Cananéens à la corvée, mais il ne lesdéposséda pas.
29 And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.	29 Ephraïm non plus ne déposséda pas les Cananéens qui habitaient Gézèr, de telle sorte que lesCananéens continuèrent d'y habiter avec lui.
30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to forced labor.	30 Zabulon ne déposséda pas les habitants de Qitrôn, ni ceux de Nahalol. Les Cananéens demeurèrentau milieu de Zabulon, mais ils furent astreints à la corvée.
31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob;	31 Asher ne déposséda pas les habitants d'Akko, ni ceux de Sidon, de Mahaleb, d'Akzib, d'Helbah,d'Aphiq ni de Rehob.
32 but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.	32 Les Ashérites demeurèrent donc au milieu des Cananéens qui habitaient le pays, car ils ne lesdépossédèrent pas.
33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.	33 Nephtali ne déposséda pas les habitants de Bet-Shémesh, ni ceux de Bet-Anat, et il habita au milieudes Cananéens qui habitaient le pays, mais les habitants de Bet-Shémesh et de Bet-Anat furent astreints par lui àla corvée.
34 The Amorites pressed the Danites back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain;	34 Les Amorites refoulèrent dans la montagne les fils de Dan et ils ne les laissèrent pas descendre dansla plaine.
35 the Amorites persisted in dwelling in Har-heres, in Aijalon, and in Sha-albim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily upon them, and they became subject to forced labor.	35 Les Amorites se maintinrent à Har-Hérès, à Ayyalôn et à Shaalbim, mais lorsque la main de lamaison de Joseph se fit plus lourde, ils furent soumis à la corvée.
36 And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.	36 (Le territoire des Edomites s'étend à partir de la montée des Scorpions, à la Roche, et va ensuite enmontant.)
