1 After the death of Joshua the people of Israel inquired of the LORD, "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?"	1 Dopo la morte di Giosuè, i figli di Israele domandarono a Jahvè: «Chi di noi per primo andrà a combattere contro i Cananei?»
2 The LORD said, "Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand."	2 Jahvè disse: «Andrà Giuda: ecco, metto il paese in suo potere».
3 And Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him.	3 Allora Giuda disse al fratello Simeone: «Parti con me per la regione che mi è toccata in sorte e combattiamo contro i Cananei: anchio poi verrò con te nella regione che ti è toccata in sorte». Simeone si unì a lui.
4 Then Judah went up and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they defeated ten thousand of them at Bezek.	4 Allora Giuda partì e Jahvè mise nella loro mano i Cananei e i Ferezei; essi ne sconfissero diecimila presso Bezek.
5 They came upon Adoni-bezek at Bezek, and fought against him, and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.	5 Trovarono a Bezek Adoni-Bezek, gli diedero battaglia e sconfissero Cananei e Ferezei.
6 Adoni-bezek fled; but they pursued him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.	6 Adoni-Bezek si diede alla fuga, ma essi lo inseguirono, lo catturarono e gli amputarono i pollici delle mani e dei piedi.
7 And Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and their great toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has requited me." And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.	7 Allora Adoni-Bezek esclamò: «Settanta re, mutilati dei pollici alle mani e ai piedi, solevano raccogliere le briciole sotto la mia tavola. Come ho ‘atto io, così Dio mi ripaga!» Lo condussero a Gerusalemme, dove morì.
8 And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.	8 I figli di Giuda andarono poi a combattere contro Gerusalemme, la conquistarono, la passarono a fil di spada e misero la città a fuoco.
9 And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwelt in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland.	9 Poi i figli di Giuda scesero ad attaccare i Cananei, che abitavano la montagna, il Negheb e la Shefela.
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba); and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.	10 Giuda andò anche contro i Cananei che abitavano Hebron — Hebron si chiamava prima Kiriat-Arba — e sconfisse Sheshai, Akhiman e Talmai;
11 From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher.	11 di là marciò contro gli abitanti di Debir — Debir si chiamava prima Kiriat-Sefer —.
12 And Caleb said, "He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and takes it, I will give him Achsah my daughter as wife."	12 In quell'occasione Chaleb aveva detto: «A colui che batterà Kiriat-Sefer e la conquisterà, darò in moglie Achsa mia figlia».
13 And Othni-el the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.	13 La prese Otniel figlio di Kenaz, fratello minore di Chaleb: questi gli diede in moglie la figlia Achsa.
14 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field; and she alighted from her ass, and Caleb said to her, "What do you wish?"	14 Allora, come essa andò in sposa, egli la indusse a domandare al padre un campo. Essa saltò giù dall’asino e Chaleb le disse: «Che hai?»
15 She said to him, "Give me a present; since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water." And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.	15 Essa rispose: «Fammi un dono nuziale: poiché mi hai assegnato una regione asciutta, dammi almeno una sorgente d’acqua». E Chaleb le concesse la sorgente superiore e la sorgente inferiore.
16 And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad; and they went and settled with the people.	16 I figli di Khobab il Kenita, suocero di Mosè, salirono con i figli di Giuda dalla città delle Palme al deserto di Giuda, che è a sud di Arad, e andarono ad abitare con quel popolo.
17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called Hormah.	17 Giuda poi marciò con il fratello Simeone: sconfissero i Cananei che abitavano a Zefat; la votarono all’anatema. Perciò la città fu chiamata Khorma.
18 Judah also took Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.	18 Giuda conquistò anche Gaza con il territorio; Ascalon con il territorio; Ekron con il territorio.
19 And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain, because they had chariots of iron.	19 Jahvè era con Giuda: così egli si impadronì della montagna, mentre non riuscì a cacciare gli abitanti della valle, perché avevano carri ferrati.
20 And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said; and he drove out from it the three sons of Anak.	20 Hebron, come Mosè aveva disposto, fu assegnata a Chaleb che ne cacciò i tre figli di Anak.
21 But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who dwelt in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have dwelt with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.	21 Invece i figli di Beniamin non riuscirono a cacciare i Gebusei che abitavano a Serusalemime: così i Gebusei abitano a Gerusalemme con i figli di Beniamin fino a oggi.
22 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and the LORD was with them.	22 Anche la casa di Giuseppe fece una spedizione contro Bethel: Jahvè fu con loro.
23 And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.)	23 La casa di Giuseppe fece una ricognizione a Bethel — la città si chiamava prima Luz —:
24 And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, "Pray, show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you."	24 gli osservatori videro un uomo che usciva dalla città e gli dissero: «Mostraci un accesso alla città e noi ti faremo grazia».
25 And he showed them the way into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go.	25 Egli allora indicò un accesso alla città: essi passarono la città a fil di spada e lasciarono libero quell’uomo con tutta la famiglia.
26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city, and called its name Luz; that is its name to this day.	26 L’uomo andò nel paese degli Hittiti, vi fondò una città e la chiamò Luz: questo è il suo nome fino a oggi.
27 Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taa-nach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; but the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land.	27 Manasse non occupò Bet-Shean con le dipendenze, Taanach con Te dipendenze, né cacciò gli abitanti di Dor e delle dipendenze, di Jibleam e delle dipendenze, gli abitanti di Meghiddo e delle dipendenze: i Cananei continuarono ad abitare in quella regione.
28 When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.	28 Quando Israele fu più forte, ridusse i Cananei in schiavitù, ma non riuscì a cacciarli.
29 And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.	29 Così Efraim non riuscì a cacciare i Cananei che abitavano Gezer: anzi i Cananei continuarono ad abitare in mezzo a lui a Gezer.
30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to forced labor.	30 Zabulon non riuscì a cacciare gli abitanti di Kitron né gli abitanti di Nahalol: anzi i Cananei continuarono ad abitare in mezzo a lui e furono ridotti in schiavitù.
31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob;	31 Asher non riuscì a cacciare gli abitanti di Acco e gli abitanti di Sidone, di Akhlab, di Achzib, di Khelba, di Afek e di Rekhob;
32 but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.	32 anzi gli Asheriti abitarono in mezzo ai Cananei, perché non erano riusciti a cacciarli.
33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.	33 Neftali non riuscì a cacciare gli abitanti di Bet-Shemesh, gli abitanti di Bet-Anat; anzi essi abitarono in mezzo ai Cananei che abitavano quella regione; gli abitanti di Bet-Shemesh e di Bet-Anat furono ridotti in schiavitù.
34 The Amorites pressed the Danites back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain;	34 Gli Amorrei tenevano i figli di Dan confinati sulla montagna impedendo loro di scendere a valle:
35 the Amorites persisted in dwelling in Har-heres, in Aijalon, and in Sha-albim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily upon them, and they became subject to forced labor.	35 gli Amorrei continuarono ad abitare in Har-Kheres, in Aialon e in Shaalbim, ma, come si rafforzò la casa di Giuseppe, essi furono ridotti in schiavitù.
36 And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.	36 I confini degli Amorrei si stendevano dalla salita di Akrabbim, da Sela in su.
