Joshua 24

1 Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God.	1 E raunò Iosuè tutte le schiatte (de' figliuoli) d' Israel in Sichem; e chiamò i maggiori delle nazioni (e' più nobili) e' principi e' giudici e' maestri; e istettero dinanzi a lui.
2 And Joshua said to all the people, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Your fathers lived of old beyond the Euphrates, Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods.	2 E così favellò al popolo: questo dice Iddio Signore d'Israel: di là dal (fiume) Giordano abitarono i vostri padri dal principio, Tare il quale fue padre di Abraam, e Nacor; e servirono agli dii altrui.
3 Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan, and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac;	3 E io (tolsi e) levai il vostro padre Abraam dei confini di Mesopotamia; e sì lo menai nella terra di Canaan, e multiplicai (e crescetti) il seme suo.
4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. And I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.	4 E sì gli diedi Isaac; e poi ad Isaac sì diedi Iacob ed Esaù; de' quali Esaù sì ebbe (e diedigli) il monte di Seir a possedere; ma Iacob e i suoi figliuoli si andarono giuso nello Egitto.
5 And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt with what I did in the midst of it; and afterwards I brought you out.	5 E mandai Moisè e Aaron; e percossi lo Egitto di molti segni e cose maravigliose.
6 Then I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and you came to the sea; and the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea.	6 E trassi voi e i vostri padri dello Egitto, e veniste al mare; e perseguitarono gli Egizii i vostri padri colli carri loro (armati) e con la (grande) cavalleria, insino al mare rosso.
7 And when they cried to the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and made the sea come upon them and cover them; and your eyes saw what I did to Egypt; and you lived in the wilderness a long time.	7 E gridarono a Dio i figliuoli d' Israel; e Iddio puose tenebre (e oscurità) tra voi e gli Egizii, e mandò loro addosso il mare, e sì gli percosse tutti. E vidono i vostri occhi ciò ch' io ho fatto in Egitto; e abitaste nella solitudine (e nel deserto) molto tempo.
8 Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived on the other side of the Jordan; they fought with you, and I gave them into your hand, and you took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you.	8 E sì vi menai alla terra degli Amorrei, i quali abitavano di là dal (fiume) Giordano; e combattendo. loro contro a voi, io gli diedi nelle vostre mani, e sì possedeste la terra loro, e sì gli uccideste.
9 Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel; and he sent and invited Balaam the son of Beor to curse you,	9 E levossi Balac figliuolo di Sefor re di Moab, e pugnò contro ad Israel; e mandò e chiamò Balaam figliuolo di Beor, acciò che vi maledicesse.
10 but I would not listen to Balaam; therefore he blessed you; so I delivered you out of his hand.	10 E io nol volsi udire; ma per contrario, per lui medesimo vi benedissi, e sì vi liberai delle suemani.
11 And you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho, and the men of Jericho fought against you, and also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I gave them into your hand.	11 E passaste il (fiume) Giordano, e veniste a Gerico. E combatterono contro a voi gli uomini di quella città (sua), l' Amorreo, il Ferezeo, il Cananeo e l'Eteo e lo Iebuseo e l' Eveo; e sì gli misi tutti nelle vostre mani.
12 And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out before you, the two kings of the Amorites; it was not by your sword or by your bow.	12 E mandai dinanzi a voi calabroni (neri); e sì cacciai de' luoghi loro, due re degli Amorrei, non per forza del tuo coltello, nè per virtù del tuo arco.
13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and cities which you had not built, and you dwell therein; you eat the fruit of vineyards and oliveyards which you did not plant.'	13 E dièdivi la terra la quale voi non lavoraste, (e nella quale voi non vi faticaste) e le cittadi le quali voi non edificaste, acciò che voi v' abitaste dentro, e le vigne e gli uliveti che voi non piantaste.
14 "Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.	14 Adunque oggi mai temete Iddio Signore, e sì gli servite col cuore verissimo e perfetto; e cacciate via gli dii ai quali servirono i vostri padri in Mesopotamia e in Egitto, e sì servite a Dio Signore vero.
15 And if you be unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."	15 Ma se vi pare pur male, che voi serviate a Dio, il partito sì v'è dato : eleggetevi oggi quello che vi piace, e a cui vi pare più convenevole di servire, o agli dii ai quali servirono i vostri padri in Mesopotamia, o agli dii degli Amorrei nella terra de' quali voi abitate; ma io e la mia casa sì serviremo a Dio Signore (onnipotente).
16 Then the people answered, "Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;	16 E rispuose il popolo, e sì disse: sia da lungi da noi (e al tutto si parta) che noi abbandoniamo Iddio nostro Signore, e serviamo agli dii altrui.
17 for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed;	17 Iddio nostro Signore sì ci trasse, noi e i nostri padri, della terra d' Egitto, della casa della servitudine (ove eravamo servi e ischiavi); e fece, veggendo noi, segni grandissimi (e cose maravigliose), e sì ci guardò per tutta la via, per la quale noi andammo, e da tutti i popoli i quali passammo.
18 and the LORD drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land; therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God."	18 E cacciò tutte quante le genti, e l' Amorreo abitatore della terra nella quale noi siamo entrati; e imperciò noi serviremo a Dio Signore, imperciò che è Dio nostro (Signore).
19 But Joshua said to the people, "You cannot serve the LORD; for he is a holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins.	19 E disse Iosuè al popolo: io veggio che voi non potrete servire a Dio Signore, imperciò ch' egli è Iddio (Signore) santo e forte, e sì è Iddio zelatore, e non perdonerà alle vostre follie e peccati iscelerati.
20 If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume you, after having done you good."	20 Onde se voi vi partirete da Dio Signore e servirete agli dii altrui, egli si rivolgerà, e sì vi tormenterà, e sì vi farà venire meno, poi ch' egli v' avrà dati tanti beni.
21 And the people said to Joshua, "Nay; but we will serve the LORD."	21 E disse tutto il popolo a Iosuè: certo non sarà così (come tu dì e favelli), ma noi serviremo a Dio Signore.
22 Then Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD, to serve him." And they said, "We are witnesses."	22 Adunque, disse loro Iosuè: voi siete testimonii, però che voi vi avete eletto (due volte) il Signore, acciò che voi il serviate. E rispuosero: testimonii saremo.
23 He said, "Then put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the LORD, the God of Israel."	23 E allora, disse Iosuè, cacciate (e gettate) gli dii altrui del mezzo di voi, e inchinate i vostri cuori a Dio Signore d' Israel.
24 And the people said to Joshua, "The LORD our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey."	24 E disse il popolo a Iosuè: noi serviremo e saremo ubbidienti a Dio nostro Signore, e sì (serveremo e) faremo i suoi comandamenti.
25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem.	25 E in quel dì fece (e trasse) patto (e legamento) Iosuè; (e disse) e propose dinanzi al popolo tutti i comandamenti e giudicii in Sichem.
26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak in the sanctuary of the LORD.	26 E ancora tutte le parole dette dal popolo iscrisse nel volume della legge di Dio Signore; e tolse una grande pietra, e sì la puose sotto la quercia, la quale era nel santuario di Dio Signore.
27 And Joshua said to all the people, "Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it has heard all the words of the LORD which he spoke to us; therefore it shall be a witness against you, lest you deal falsely with your God."	27 E sì disse a tutto il popolo: ecco, che questa pietra vi sarà in testimonio, cioè che voi avete udite tutte le parole di Dio, le quali v' ha favellato (e detto), acciò che voi forse di poi nol voleste negare, e mentire a Dio nostro Signore.
28 So Joshua sent the people away, every man to his inheritance.	28 E lasciò andare tutto il popolo (e la gente) ciascuno nella sua possessione (e abitazione).
29 After these things Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being a hundred and ten years old.	29 E dopo queste cose sì morì Iosuè figliuolo di Nun servo di Dio, essendo nella etade di CX anni.
30 And they buried him in his own inheritance at Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash.	30 E sì 'l sotterrarono nelli confini della sua possessione in Tamnatsare, la quale sì è edificata nel monte di Efraim, dalla parte del settentrione del monte di Gaas.
31 And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua and had known all the work which the LORD did for Israel.	31 E servì Israel a Dio Signore tutti i dì di Iosuè, e degli antichi che vissono poi lungo tempo dopo Iosuè, e che conosceano tutte le opere (maravigliose) di Dio Signore, le quali avea fatte in Israel.
32 The bones of Joseph which the people of Israel brought up from Egypt were buried at Shechem, in the portion of ground which Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money; it became an inheritance of the descendants of Joseph.	32 E ancora poi sì sotterrarono l'ossa di Iosef in Sichem, le quali aveano portate con loro d' Egitto, e puoserle in una parte d' uno campo il quale avea comperato Iacob, [per] cento pecore giovani, dai figliuoli di Emor padre di Sichem, e fue poi possessione de' figliuoli di Iosef.
33 And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him at Gibe-ah, the town of Phinehas his son, which had been given him in the hill country of Ephraim.	33 Ancora Eleazaro (sommo sacerdote e priete) figliuolo d' Aaron si morì; e sotterrorlo Finees, e' suoi figliuoli, nella terra di Gabaat, la quale gli fu data nel monte di Efraim.
