Joshua 24

1 Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God.	1 Giosuè radunò tutte le tribù d'Israele in Sichem e chiamò gli anziani d'Israele, i suoi capi, i suoi giudici e i suoi ufficiali, che si presentarono davanti a Dio.
2 And Joshua said to all the people, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Your fathers lived of old beyond the Euphrates, Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods.	2 Giosuè disse a tutto il popolo: "Così ha parlato il Signore, Dio d'Israele: "Al di là del fiume abitavano anticamente i vostri padri, Terach padre di Abramo e padre di Nacor; essi servivano ad altri dèi.
3 Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan, and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac;	3 Ma io trassi il vostro padre Abramo di là dal fiume e lo feci andare per tutta la terra di Canaan, moltiplicai la sua discendenza e gli diedi Isacco;
4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. And I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.	4 e a Isacco diedi Giacobbe ed Esaù; ad Esaù diedi il monte Seir come suo possesso; Giacobbe e i suoi figli invece discesero in Egitto.
5 And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt with what I did in the midst of it; and afterwards I brought you out.	5 Mandai quindi Mosè ed Aronne e colpii l'Egitto con quello che feci in esso; poi ve ne feci uscire.
6 Then I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and you came to the sea; and the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea.	6 Feci uscire i vostri padri dall'Egitto e arrivarono fino al mare; gli Egiziani inseguirono i vostri padri con carri e cavalieri fino al Mar Rosso.
7 And when they cried to the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and made the sea come upon them and cover them; and your eyes saw what I did to Egypt; and you lived in the wilderness a long time.	7 Essi gridarono al Signore ed egli pose fitte tenebre fra voi e gli Egiziani e fece scorrere su di loro il mare, che li sommerse. I vostri occhi hanno veduto quello che ho fatto in Egitto e voi avete dimorato molto tempo nel deserto.
8 Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived on the other side of the Jordan; they fought with you, and I gave them into your hand, and you took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you.	8 Io vi condussi nella terra degli Amorrei che abitavano al di là del Giordano; fecero guerra contro di voi e io li consegnai nelle vostre mani; voi avete conquistato la loro terra e io li ho distrutti davanti a voi.
9 Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel; and he sent and invited Balaam the son of Beor to curse you,	9 Poi sorse Balak, figlio di Zippor, re di Moab, a combattere contro Israele e mandò a chiamare Balaam, figlio di Beor, per maledirvi.
10 but I would not listen to Balaam; therefore he blessed you; so I delivered you out of his hand.	10 Ma io non volli ascoltare Balaam; egli stesso dovette benedirvi e vi salvai dalle sue mani.
11 And you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho, and the men of Jericho fought against you, and also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I gave them into your hand.	11 Avete poi attraversato il Giordano e siete pervenuti a Gerico; i signori di Gerico vi hanno fatto guerra, come pure gli Amorrei, i Perizziti, i Cananei, gli Hittiti, i Gergesei, gli Evei, i Gebusei; ma io li ho consegnati in vostra mano.
12 And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out before you, the two kings of the Amorites; it was not by your sword or by your bow.	12 Io mandai innanzi a voi le vespe pungenti, che hanno scacciato davanti a voi i due re amorrei, non per la vostra spada, non per il vostro arco.
13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and cities which you had not built, and you dwell therein; you eat the fruit of vineyards and oliveyards which you did not plant.'	13 Vi ho dato una terra che voi non avete coltivato e città che non avete costruito, eppure vi abitate e mangiate dei frutti delle vigne e degli oliveti che non avete piantati".
14 "Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.	14 "Ora, quindi, temete il Signore e servitelo con fedeltà e sincerità; e togliete via gli dèi ai quali hanno servito i vostri padri di là del fiume e in Egitto e servite il Signore.
15 And if you be unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."	15 Ché se vi sembra duro servire il Signore, sceglietevi oggi stesso chi volete servire, se gli dèi che hanno servito i vostri padri di là del fiume, o gli dèi degli Amorrei nella cui terra voi abitate. Io e la mia famiglia serviremo il Signore".
16 Then the people answered, "Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;	16 Il popolo rispose e disse: "Lungi da noi abbandonare il Signore per servire altri dèi!
17 for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed;	17 Poiché il Signore è il nostro Dio, che ha fatto salire noi e i nostri padri dalla terra d'Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitù, ha operato queste grandi meraviglie davanti ai nostri occhi, ci ha protetti per tutta la strada che abbiamo percorso e fra tutti i popoli in mezzo ai quali siamo passati.
18 and the LORD drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land; therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God."	18 Il Signore ha scacciato davanti a noi tutti i popoli e gli Amorrei che abitavano il paese; perciò anche noi vogliamo servire il Signore, perché egli è il nostro Dio".
19 But Joshua said to the people, "You cannot serve the LORD; for he is a holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins.	19 Allora Giosuè disse al popolo: "Voi non potete servire il Signore, perché egli è un Dio santo, un Dio geloso; egli non sopporta le vostre trasgressioni e i vostri peccati.
20 If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume you, after having done you good."	20 Se voi abbandonerete il Signore e servirete dèi stranieri, egli si volterà, vi manderà del male e vi distruggerà, dopo avervi tanto beneficato".
21 And the people said to Joshua, "Nay; but we will serve the LORD."	21 Rispose il popolo a Giosuè: "No, noi serviremo il Signore!".
22 Then Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD, to serve him." And they said, "We are witnesses."	22 Allora Giosuè disse al popolo: "Voi siete testimoni contro voi stessi, che avete scelto il Signore per servirlo!". Quelli risposero: "Siamo testimoni!". Giosuè disse:
23 He said, "Then put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the LORD, the God of Israel."	23 "Allora togliete via gli dèi stranieri che sono in mezzo a voi e indirizzate i vostri cuori al Signore, Dio d'Israele".
24 And the people said to Joshua, "The LORD our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey."	24 Il popolo rispose a Giosuè: "Serviremo il Signore, nostro Dio, e ascolteremo la sua voce".
25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem.	25 Così Giosuè in quel giorno strinse un patto con il popolo e impose loro uno statuto e una regola a Sichem.
26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak in the sanctuary of the LORD.	26 Poi Giosuè scrisse quelle parole nel libro della legge di Dio; prese una grande pietra e la drizzò ivi sotto il terebinto, che era nel santuario del Signore.
27 And Joshua said to all the people, "Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it has heard all the words of the LORD which he spoke to us; therefore it shall be a witness against you, lest you deal falsely with your God."	27 Giosuè disse a tutto il popolo: "Ecco, questa pietra sarà una testimonianza per noi, perché essa ha udito tutte le parole che il Signore ci ha detto; sarà una testimonianza contro di voi, perché voi non rinneghiate il vostro Dio".
28 So Joshua sent the people away, every man to his inheritance.	28 Quindi Giosuè congedò il popolo, ciascuno alla sua eredità.
29 After these things Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being a hundred and ten years old.	29 Dopo queste cose morì Giosuè figlio di Nun, servo del Signore; egli aveva centodieci anni.
30 And they buried him in his own inheritance at Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash.	30 Lo seppellirono nel territorio di sua proprietà a Timnat-Serach, che era sulle montagne di Efraim, a nord del monte Gaas.
31 And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua and had known all the work which the LORD did for Israel.	31 Israele servì il Signore per tutta la vita di Giosuè e per tutti i giorni degli anziani che sopravvissero a Giosuè e che avevano costatato tutte le opere che il Signore aveva fatto per Israele.
32 The bones of Joseph which the people of Israel brought up from Egypt were buried at Shechem, in the portion of ground which Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money; it became an inheritance of the descendants of Joseph.	32 Le ossa di Giuseppe, che i figli d'Israele avevano portato dall'Egitto, le misero nella tomba a Sichem, in una parte del terreno che aveva comprato Giacobbe dai figli di Camor, padre di Sichem, per cento sicli d'argento e che i figli di Giuseppe avevano ricevuto in eredità.
33 And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him at Gibe-ah, the town of Phinehas his son, which had been given him in the hill country of Ephraim.	33 Poi morì anche Eleazaro, figlio di Aronne, e lo seppellirono a Gabaa di Finees, suo figlio, luogo che gli era stato dato sulle montagne di Efraim.
