Joshua 20

1 Then the LORD said to Joshua,	1 Yahvé dit à Josué:
2 "Say to the people of Israel, 'Appoint the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses,	2 "Parle aux Israélites et dis-leur: Donnez-vous les villes de refuge dont je vous ai parlé parl'intermédiaire de Moïse,
3 that the manslayer who kills any person without intent or unwittingly may flee there; they shall be for you a refuge from the avenger of blood.	3 où pourra s'enfuir le meurtrier qui a frappé quelqu'un par inadvertance (involontairement), et quivous serviront de refuge contre le vengeur du sang.
4 He shall flee to one of these cities and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and explain his case to the elders of that city; then they shall take him into the city, and give him a place, and he shall remain with them.	4 (C'est donc vers une de ces villes que le meurtrier devra s'enfuir. Il se tiendra à l'entrée de la porte dela ville et exposera son cas aux anciens de la ville. Ceux-ci l'admettront dans leur ville et lui assigneront un lieuoù il habitera parmi eux.
5 And if the avenger of blood pursues him, they shall not give up the slayer into his hand; because he killed his neighbor unwittingly, having had no enmity against him in times past.	5 Si le vengeur du sang le poursuit, ils ne livreront pas le meurtrier entre ses mains, car c'estinvolontairement qu'il a frappé son prochain, sans avoir eu contre lui de haine invétérée.
6 And he shall remain in that city until he has stood before the congregation for judgment, until the death of him who is high priest at the time: then the slayer may go again to his own town and his own home, to the town from which he fled.'"	6 Il devra rester dans cette ville) jusqu'à ce qu'il comparaisse en jugement devant la communauté(jusqu'à la mort du grand prêtre en fonction à cette époque. 7 So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.	7 On consacra donc Qédesh en Galilée, dans la montagne de Nephtali, Sichem dans la montagned'Ephraïm, et Qiryat-Arba -- c'est Hébron -- dans la montagne de Juda.
8 And beyond the Jordan east of Jericho, they appointed Bezer in the wilderness on the tableland, from the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead, from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan, from the tribe of Manasseh.	8 De l'autre côté du Jourdain de Jéricho à l'orient, on désigna dans le désert, sur le plateau, Béçer de latribu de Ruben, Ramot en Galaad, de la tribu de Gad et Golân en Bashân, de la tribu de Manassé.
9 These were the cities designated for all the people of Israel, and for the stranger sojourning among them, that any one who killed a person without intent could flee there, so that he might not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, till he stood before the congregation.	9 Telles furent les villes désignées pour tous les Israélites et pour les étrangers qui résident parmi eux,pour qu'y pût fuir quiconque aurait frappé quelqu'un par inadvertance, et qu'il échappât à la main du vengeur dusang, jusqu'à sa comparution devant la communauté.
