1 And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases,	1 He cal ed the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases,

3 And he said to them, "Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.	3 He said to them, 'Take nothing for the journey: neither staff, nor haversack, nor bread, nor money; anddo not have a spare tunic.
4 And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.	4 Whatever house you enter, stay there; and when you leave let your departure be from there.
5 And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them."	5 As for those who do not welcome you, when you leave their town shake the dust from your feet asevidence against them.'
6 And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.	6 So they set out and went from village to vil age proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.
7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead,	7 Meanwhile Herod the tetrarch had heard about al that was going on; and he was puzzled, becausesome people were saying that John had risen from the dead,
8 by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen.	8 others that Elijah had reappeared, still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life.
9 Herod said, "John I beheaded; but who is this about whom I hear such things?" And he sought to see him.	9 But Herod said, 'John? I beheaded him. So who is this I hear such reports about?' And he was anxiousto see him.
10 On their return the apostles told him what they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart to a city called Beth-saida.	10 On their return the apostles gave him an account of al they had done. Then he took them with him andwithdrew towards a town called Bethsaida where they could be by themselves.
11 When the crowds learned it, they followed him; and he welcomed them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God, and cured those who had need of healing.	11 But the crowds got to know and they went after him. He made them welcome and talked to them aboutthe kingdom of God; and he cured those who were in need of healing.
12 Now the day began to wear away; and the twelve came and said to him, "Send the crowd away, to go into the villages and country round about, to lodge and get provisions; for we are here in a lonely place."	12 It was late afternoon when the Twelve came up to him and said, 'Send the people away, and they cango to the vil ages and farms round about to find lodging and food; for we are in a lonely place here.'
13 But he said to them, "You give them something to eat." They said, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish--unless we are to go and buy food for all these people."	13 He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' But they said, 'We have no more than five loavesand two fish, unless we are to go ourselves and buy food for al these people.'
14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, "Make them sit down in companies, about fifty each."	14 For there were about five thousand men. But he said to his disciples, 'Get them to sit down in parties ofabout fifty.'
15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.	15 They did so and made them al sit down.
16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.	16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven, and said the blessing overthem; then he broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute among the crowd.
17 And all ate and were satisfied. And they took up what was left over, twelve baskets of broken pieces.	17 They al ate as much as they wanted, and when the scraps left over were col ected they fil ed twelvebaskets.
18 Now it happened that as he was praying alone the disciples were with him; and he asked them, "Who do the people say that I am?"	18 Now it happened that he was praying alone, and his disciples came to him and he put this question tothem, 'Who do the crowds say I am?'
19 And they answered, "John the Baptist; but others say, Elijah; and others, that one of the old prophets has risen."	19 And they answered, 'Some say John the Baptist; others Elijah; others again one of the ancientprophets come back to life.'
20 And he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered, "The Christ of God."	20 'But you,' he said to them, 'who do you say I am?' It was Peter who spoke up. 'The Christ of God,' hesaid.
21 But he charged and commanded them to tell this to no one,	21 But he gave them strict orders and charged them not to say this to anyone.
22 saying, "The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised."	22 He said, 'The Son of man is destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and chief priestsand scribes and to be put to death, and to be raised up on the third day.'
23 And he said to all, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.	23 Then, speaking to al , he said, 'If anyone wants to be a fol ower of mine, let him renounce himself andtake up his cross every day and fol ow me.
24 For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake, he will save it.	24 Anyone who wants to save his life wil lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, wil save it.
25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?	25 What benefit is it to anyone to win the whole world and forfeit or lose his very self?
26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.	26 For if anyone is ashamed of me and of my words, of him the Son of man wil be ashamed when hecomes in his own glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.
27 But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God."	27 'I tel you truly, there are some standing here who wil not taste death before they see the kingdom ofGod.'
28 Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray.	28 Now about eight days after this had been said, he took with him Peter, John and James and went upthe mountain to pray.
29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was altered, and his raiment became dazzling white.	29 And it happened that, as he was praying, the aspect of his face was changed and his clothing becamesparkling white.
30 And behold, two men talked with him, Moses and Elijah,	30 And suddenly there were two men talking to him; they were Moses and Elijah
31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem.	31 appearing in glory, and they were speaking of his passing which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem.
32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, and when they wakened they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.	32 Peter and his companions were heavy with sleep, but they woke up and saw his glory and the two menstanding with him.
33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is well that we are here; let us make three booths, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah"--not knowing what he said.	33 As these were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, 'Master, it is wonderful for us to be here; so let usmake three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.' He did not know what he was saying.
34 As he said this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.	34 As he was saying this, a cloud came and covered them with shadow; and when they went into thecloud the disciples were afraid.
35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!"	35 And a voice came from the cloud saying, 'This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him.'
36 And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silence and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.	36 And after the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. The disciples kept silence and, at that time,told no one what they had seen.
37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him.	37 Now it happened that on the fol owing day when they were coming down from the mountain a largecrowd came to meet him.
38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried, "Teacher, I beg you to look upon my son, for he is my only child;	38 And suddenly a man in the crowd cried out. 'Master,' he said, 'I implore you to look at my son: he is myonly child.
39 and behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him till he foams, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him.	39 A spirit wil suddenly take hold of him, and all at once it gives a sudden cry and throws the boy intoconvulsions with foaming at the mouth; it is slow to leave him, but when it does, it leaves the boy worn out.
40 And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not."	40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, and they could not.'
41 Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here."	41 In reply Jesus said, 'Faithless and perverse generation! How much longer must I be among you andput up with you? Bring your son here.'
42 While he was coming, the demon tore him and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.	42 Even while the boy was coming, the devil threw him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebukedthe unclean spirit and cured the boy and gave him back to his father,
43 And all were astonished at the majesty of God. But while they were all marveling at everything he did, he said to his disciples,	43 and everyone was awestruck by the greatness of God. But while everyone was ful of admiration for alhe did, he said to his disciples,
44 "Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men."	44 'For your part, you must have these words constantly in mind: The Son of man is going to be deliveredinto the power of men.'
45 But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.	45 But they did not understand what he said; it was hidden from them so that they should not see themeaning of it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46 And an argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest.	46 An argument started between them about which of them was the greatest.
47 But when Jesus perceived the thought of their hearts, he took a child and put him by his side,	47 Jesus knew what thoughts were going through their minds, and he took a little child whom he set byhis side
48 and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me; for he who is least among you all is the one who is great."	48 and then he said to them, 'Anyone who welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; andanyone who welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me. The least among you all is the one who is thegreatest.'
49 John answered, "Master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us."	49 John spoke up. 'Master,' he said, 'we saw someone driving out devils in your name, and because he isnot with us we tried to stop him.'
50 But Jesus said to him, "Do not forbid him; for he that is not against you is for you."	50 But Jesus said to him, 'You must not stop him: anyone who is not against you is for you.'
51 When the days drew near for him to be received up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.	51 Now it happened that as the time drew near for him to be taken up, he resolutely turned his facetowards Jerusalem
52 And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him;	52 and sent messengers ahead of him. These set out, and they went into a Samaritan vil age to makepreparations for him,
53 but the people would not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem.	53 but the people would not receive him because he was making for Jerusalem.
54 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to bid fire come down from heaven and consume them?"	54 Seeing this, the disciples James and John said, 'Lord, do you want us to cal down fire from heaven toburn them up?'

57 As they were going along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."	57 As they travel ed along they met a man on the road who said to him, 'I wil fol ow you wherever you go.'
58 And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head."	58 Jesus answered, 'Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hasnowhere to lay his head.'
59 To another he said, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father."	59 Another to whom he said, 'Fol ow me,' replied, 'Let me go and bury my father first.'
60 But he said to him, "Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."	60 But he answered, 'Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of thekingdom of God.'
61 Another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home."	61 Another said, 'I wil fol ow you, sir, but first let me go and say good -- bye to my people at home.'
62 Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."	62 Jesus said to him, 'Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom ofGod.'
