1 Now when the Pharisees gathered together to him, with some of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem,	1 I farisei e alcuni scribi venuti da Gerusalemme si radunarono intorno a Gesù,
2 they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands defiled, that is, unwashed.	2 e vedendo che alcuni dei suoi discepoli mangiavano con mani impure, cioè non lavate —
3 (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they wash their hands, observing the tradition of the elders;	3 difatti i farisei e tutti i Giudei non mangiano senza essersi lavate le mani fino al gomito, attaccati come sono alla tradizione degli antichi,
4 and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they purify themselves; and there are many other traditions which they observe, the washing of cups and pots and vessels of bronze. )	4 e quando tornano dal mercato non mangiano senza aver fatto abluzioni; e molte altre pratiche osservano per tradizione, come purificare coppe, vasi, rami —
5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with hands defiled?"	5 i farisei e gli scribi gli dissero: «Perché i tuoi discepoli non si comportano secondo la tradizione degli antichi e mangiano con mani impure?»
6 And he said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;	6 E Gesù rispose loro: «Isaia ha ben profetizzato di voi, ipocriti, come sta scritto: Questo popolo mi onora con le labbra, ma il suo cuore è lontano da me.
7 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.'	7 È vano il culto che mi rendono insegnando dottrine che sono precetti umani.
8 You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men."	8 Trascurando, infatti, il comandamento di Dio, vi attaccate alla tradizione degli uomini».
9 And he said to them, "You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God, in order to keep your tradition!	9 Disse ancora loro: «Bene davvero eludete il comandamento di Dio per osservare la vostra tradizione!
10 For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die';	10 Mosè difatti ha detto: Onora tuo padre e tua madre, è chi maledice il padre o la madre sia messo a morte.
11 but you say, 'If a man tells his father or his mother, What you would have gained from me is Corban' (that is, given to God) --	11 Voi, invece, dite:“Se uno dice al padre o alla madre: Sia corban— cioè offerta sacra — ciò con cui avrei dovuto aiutarvi”
12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother,	12 non gli consentite di fare più nulla per il padre e la madre,
13 thus making void the word of God through your tradition which you hand on. And many such things you do."	13 annullando così la parola di Dio a pro della tradizione da voi trasmessa. E di cose simili ne fate tante!»
14 And he called the people to him again, and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand:	14 E richiamata a sé la folla diceva: «Ascoltatemi tutti e comprendete!
15 there is nothing outside a man which by going into him can defile him; but the things which come out of a man are what defile him."	15 Non c’è nulla fuori dell’uomo che, entrando in lui, possa contaminarlo; ma ciò che esce dalla bocca, questo contamina l’uomo.
16 .	16 Chi ha orecchie per intendere, intenda!»
17 And when he had entered the house, and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable.	17 E quando fu entrato in casa, lontano dalla folla, i suoi discepoli lo interrogarono su questa parabola.
18 And he said to them, "Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a man from outside cannot defile him,	18 Ed egli disse loro; «Fino a questo punto anche voi siete senza intelligenza? Non capite che nulla di ciò che dal di fuori entra nell’uomo può contaminarlo,
19 since it enters, not his heart but his stomach, and so passes on?" (Thus he declared all foods clean.)	19 perché non gli entra nel cuore ma nel ventre, e va a finire in una fogna?» Così dichiarava puri tutti i cibi.
20 And he said, "What comes out of a man is what defiles a man.	20 Diceva ancora: «Ciò che esce dall’uomo, quello contamina l’uomo.
21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery,	21 È dal di dentro, infatti, cioè dal cuore degli uomini, che escono i pensieri cattivi, fornicazioni, furti, omicidi,
22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.	22 adulteri, cupidigie, malvagità, frodi, lascivie, invidia, maldicenza, orgoglio, stoltezza.
23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a man."	23 Sono tutte queste cose cattive che escono dal di dentro e contaminano l’uomo».
24 And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house, and would not have any one know it; yet he could not be hid.	24 Poi, partito di là, se ne andò nel territorio di Tiro e di Sidone. Ed entrò in una casa desiderando che nessuno lo sapesse, ma non poté restare nascosto.
25 But immediately a woman, whose little daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell down at his feet.	25 Una donna, infatti, la cui figlia era posseduta da uno spirito immondo, non appena sentì parlare di lui venne a gettarglisi ai piedi.
26 Now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.	26 Questa donna, che era pagana e sirofenicia di origine, lo pregava di scacciare il demonio da sua figlia.
27 And he said to her, "Let the children first be fed, for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."	27 Gesù le disse: «Lascia che dapprima si sazino i figli; non sta bene prendere il pane dei figli e gettarlo ai cagnolini».
28 But she answered him, "Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."	28 Ma essa rispose: «È vero, Signore, però i cagnolini, sotto la tavola, mangiano le briciole dei figli!»
29 And he said to her, "For this saying you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter."	29 E Gesù le disse: «Per questa tua parola, va’, il demonio è uscito da tua figlia!»
30 And she went home, and found the child lying in bed, and the demon gone.	30 Tornata a casa, essa trovò la fanciulla che riposava sul letto, e il demonio era uscito.
31 Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, through the region of the Decapolis.	31 Di nuovo, lasciato il territorio di Tiro, Gesù si diresse, per Sidone, verso il mare di Galilea, in mezzo al territorio della Decapoli.
32 And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech; and they besought him to lay his hand upon him.	32 Gli conducono un sordomuto e pregano di imporgli la mano.
33 And taking him aside from the multitude privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue;	33 Ed egli, trattolo in disparte fuori dalla folla, gli mise le dita negli. orecchi e gli toccò la lingua con la saliva;
34 and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened."	34 poi, levando gli occhi al cielo, sospirò e gli disse: «Effatà!» cioè «Apriti».
35 And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.	35 E subito a colui si aprirono gli orecchi, si sciolse il nodo della lingua e parlava normalmente.
36 And he charged them to tell no one; but the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.	36 Gesù ordinò che non lo dicessero a nessuno, ma quanto più lo comandava tanto più lo divulgavano.
37 And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well; he even makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak."	37 E, al colmo dell’ammirazione, dicevano: «Egli ha fatto ogni cosa bene! Fa udire i sordi e parlare i muti!»
