Jeremiah 37

1 Zedekiah the son of Josiah, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah, reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim.	1 Sedecia, figlio di Giosia, divenne re in luogo di Conia, figlio di Ioiakìm. Nabucodònosor, re di Babilonia, lo costituì re nel paese di Giuda;
2 But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to the words of the LORD which he spoke through Jeremiah the prophet.	2 ma né lui né i suoi ministri né il popolo del paese vollero ascoltare le parole che il Signore aveva detto per mezzo di Geremia il profeta.
3 King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Ma-aseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "Pray for us to the LORD our God."	3 Il re Sedecia inviò Iucàl, figlio di Selemìa, e il sacerdote Sofonìa, figlio di Maasìa, a Geremia, a dirgli: "Intercedi per noi presso il Signore, Dio nostro".
4 Now Jeremiah was still going in and out among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.	4 Ora Geremia andava e veniva in mezzo al popolo perché non l'avevano ancora messo in prigione.
5 The army of Pharaoh had come out of Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news of them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.	5 Intanto l'esercito del faraone era uscito dall'Egitto; ne ebbero notizia i Caldei che stavano assediando Gerusalemme e si allontanarono da Gerusalemme.
6 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet:	6 La parola del Signore fu rivolta al profeta Geremia in questi termini:
7 "Thus says the LORD, God of Israel: Thus shall you say to the king of Judah who sent you to me to inquire of me, 'Behold, Pharaoh's army which came to help you is about to return to Egypt, to its own land.	7 "Così dice il Signore, Dio d'Israele: Così direte al re di Giuda che vi ha mandato a me per consultarmi: Ecco, l'esercito del faraone sta uscendo in vostro favore per aiutarvi: ma ritornerà al suo paese, l'Egitto.
8 And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city; they shall take it and burn it with fire.	8 I Caldei ritorneranno e combatteranno contro questa città, la prenderanno e la bruceranno con il fuoco".
9 Thus says the LORD, Do not deceive yourselves, saying, "The Chaldeans will surely stay away from us," for they will not stay away.	9 Così dice il Signore: "Non ingannate voi stessi dicendo: "I Caldei si sono allontanati definitivamente da noi!". No, non si sono allontanati.
10 For even if you should defeat the whole army of Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and there remained of them only wounded men, every man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.'"	10 Che seppure voi poteste battere l'intero esercito dei Caldei che combattono contro di voi e rimanessero tra loro soltanto dei feriti, ognuno si alzerebbe dalla propria tenda e incendierebbe con il fuoco questa città".
11 Now when the Chaldean army had withdrawn from Jerusalem at the approach of Pharaoh's army,	11 Mentre si allontanava l'esercito dei Caldei da Gerusalemme a causa dell'esercito del faraone,
12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to receive his portion there among the people.	12 Geremia volle uscire da Gerusalemme per andare nel territorio di Beniamino a prendere la sua eredità.
13 When he was at the Benjamin Gate, a sentry there named Irijah the son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans."	13 Ma quando lui giunse presso la Porta di Beniamino, dove stava a guardia un uomo di nome Ieria, figlio di Selemìa, figlio di Anania, costui arrestò il profeta Geremia, dicendo: "Tu stai passando ai Caldei!".
14 And Jeremiah said, "It is false; I am not deserting to the Chaldeans." But Irijah would not listen to him, and seized Jeremiah and brought him to the princes.	14 Geremia rispose: "Menzogna! Io non sto passando ai Caldei!", ma Ieria non volle ascoltarlo; arrestò Geremia e lo consegnò ai prìncipi.
15 And the princes were enraged at Jeremiah, and they beat him and imprisoned him in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for it had been made a prison.	15 I prìncipi s'indignarono contro Geremia, lo batterono e lo misero nella prigione, nella casa dello scriba Gionata, che avevano trasformata in prigione.
16 When Jeremiah had come to the dungeon cells, and remained there many days,	16 Geremia entrò nella prigione-cisterna in mezzo al fetore e vi rimase molti giorni.
17 King Zedekiah sent for him, and received him. The king questioned him secretly in his house, and said, "Is there any word from the LORD?" Jeremiah said, "There is." Then he said, "You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon."	17 Il re Sedecia mandò a prenderlo e lo interrogò nella sua casa in segreto. Disse: "C'è una parola da parte del Signore?". Geremia rispose: "C'è!" e aggiunse: "In mano del re di Babilonia sarai consegnato!".
18 Jeremiah also said to King Zedekiah, "What wrong have I done to you or your servants or this people, that you have put me in prison?	18 Quindi Geremia disse al re Sedecia: "In che cosa ho peccato contro di te e contro i tuoi ministri e contro questo popolo perché mi avete messo in prigione?
19 Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, 'The king of Babylon will not come against you and against this land?	19 Dove sono i vostri profeti che vi hanno profetizzato: "Non arriverà il re di Babilonia contro di voi e contro questo paese"?
20 Now hear, I pray you, O my lord the king: let my humble plea come before you, and do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, lest I die there."	20 Ma tu, o re mio signore, ascolta, ti prego! La mia supplica giunga dinanzi a te e non farmi ritornare nella casa dello scriba Gionata, affinché io non vi muoia".
21 So King Zedekiah gave orders, and they committed Jeremiah to the court of the guard; and a loaf of bread was given him daily from the bakers' street, until all the bread of the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.	21 Allora Sedecia dette ordine di custodire Geremia nel cortile della guardia e di dargli una pagnotta di pane al giorno, portandola dalla via dei fornai, finché non venne a mancare del tutto il pane nella città. Geremia rimase nel cortile della guardia.
