Sirach 29

1 He that shows mercy will lend to his neighbor, and he that strengthens him with his hand keeps the commandments.	1 Celui qui fait miséricorde prête à son prochain, et celui qui a la main généreuse garde les préceptes.
2 Lend to your neighbor in the time of his need; and in turn, repay your neighbor promptly.	2 Prête à ton prochain au temps de sa nécessité; mais à ton tour paye ta dette au prochain au temps fixé.
3 Confirm your word and keep faith with him, and on every occasion you will find what you need.	3 Tiens ta parole et agis loyalement avec lui, et tu trouveras toujours ce qui t'est nécessaire.
4 Many persons regard a loan as a windfall, and cause trouble to those who help them.	4 Beaucoup regardent comme une trouvaille ce qu'ils ont emprunté, et causent de l'ennui à ceux qui les ont secourus.
5 A man will kiss another's hands until he gets a loan, and will lower his voice in speaking of his neighbor's money; but at the time for repayment he will delay, and will pay in words of unconcern, and will find fault with the time.	5 Jusqu'à ce qu'ils aient reçu, ils baisent la main de celui qui leur prête, et ils font des promesses d'une voix humble;
6 If the lender exert pressure, he will hardly get back half, and will regard that as a windfall. If he does not, the borrower has robbed him of his money, and he has needlessly made him his enemy; he will repay him with curses and reproaches, and instead of glory will repay him with dishonor.	6 mais quand il faut rendre, ils demandent du temps, ils prononcent des paroles de chagrin et de murmure, et ils prétextent que les temps sont mauvais.
7 Because of such wickedness, therefore, many have refused to lend; they have been afraid of being defrauded needlessly.	7 S'ils peuvent payer, ils s'en défendent; ils rendent à peine la moitié de la dette, et ils regardent cela comme une trouvaille.
8 Nevertheless, be patient with a man in humble circumstances, and do not make him wait for your alms.	8 S'ils ne le peuvent, ils frustrent le créancier de son argent et se font de lui gratuitement un ennemi.
9 Help a poor man for the commandment's sake, and because of his need do not send him away empty.	9 Ils le payent en injures et en malédictions, et ils lui rendent l'outrage pour la grâce et le bien qu'il leur a fait.
10 Lose your silver for the sake of a brother or a friend, and do not let it rust under a stone and be lost.	10 Beaucoup ne prêtent pas, non par dureté, mais parce qu'ils craignent d'être trompés gratuitement.
11 Lay up your treasure according to the commandments of the Most High, and it will profit you more than gold.	11 Néanmoins sois magnanime envers le misérable, et ne le fais pas languir pour son aumône.
12 Store up almsgiving in your treasury, and it will rescue you from all affliction;	12 Assiste le pauvre à cause du commandement, et ne le renvoie pas les mains vides, à cause de sa misère.
13 more than a mighty shield and more than a heavy spear, it will fight on your behalf against your enemy.	13 Perds ton argent pour ton frère et pour ton ami, et ne le cache pas sous une pierre, sans profit.
14 A good man will be surety for his neighbor, but a man who has lost his sense of shame will fail him.	14 Place ton trésor selon les préceptes du Très-Haut, et il te sera plus utile que l'or.
15 Do not forget all the kindness of your surety, for he has given his life for you.	15 Cache ton aumône dans le sein du pauvre, et elle priera pour toi, afin de te délivrer de tout mal.
16 A sinner will overthrow the prosperity of his surety,	16 , 17, 18. Mieux que le bouclier et la lance du héros, elle combattra contre ton ennemi.
17 and one who does not feel grateful will abandon his rescuer.
18 Being surety has ruined many men who were prosperous, and has shaken them like a wave of the sea; it has driven men of power into exile, and they have wandered among foreign nations.
19 The sinner who has fallen into suretyship and pursues gain will fall into lawsuits.	19 L'homme de bien se fait caution pour son prochain, mais celui qui a perdu toute honte l'abandonne à lui-même.
20 Assist your neighbor according to your ability, but take heed to yourself lest you fall.	20 N'oublie pas la grâce que te fait celui qui se fait caution, car il a exposé sa vie pour toi.
21 The essentials for life are water and bread and clothing and a house to cover one's nakedness.	21 Le pécheur et l'impur fuient celui qui a répondu pour eux.
22 Better is the life of a poor man under the shelter of his roof than sumptuous food in another man's house.	22 Le pécheur s'attribue le bien de son répondant, et celui qui a le coeur ingrat abandonne son libérateur.
23 Be content with little or much.	23 Un homme répond pour son prochain et, celui-ci perdant toute honte, en sera abandonné.
24 It is a miserable life to go from house to house, and where you are a stranger you may not open your mouth;	24 L'engagement contracté mal à propos a perdu beaucoup d'hommes qui prospéraient, et les a agités comme les flots de la mer.
25 you will play the host and provide drink without being thanked, and besides this you will hear bitter words:	25 Il a banni en divers lieux des hommes puissants, qui ont erré dans les pays étrangers.
26 "Come here, stranger, prepare the table, and if you have anything at hand, let me have it to eat."	26 Le pécheur qui viole le commandement du Seigneur s'engagera en des cautions fâcheuses, et celui qui cherche à entreprendre beaucoup d'affaires s'expose au jugement.
27 "Give place, stranger, to an honored person; my brother has come to stay with me; I need my house."	27 Assiste ton prochain selon ton pouvoir; mais prends garde de ne pas tomber toi-même.
28 These things are hard to bear for a man who has feeling: scolding about lodging and the reproach of the moneylender.	28 Le principal pour la vie de l'homme, c'est l'eau, le pain, le vêtement et une maison qui couvre ce qui doit être caché.
	29 Mieux vaut la nourriture du pauvre sous un toit de planches, qu'un festin magnifique dans une maison étrangère, quand on n'a pas de domicile.
	30 Contente-toi de peu au lieu de beaucoup, et tu ne t'entendras pas reprocher d'être un étranger.
	31 C'est une vie malheureuse que de loger de maison en maison; là où l'on est reçu comme hôte, on n'agit pas avec confiance, et l'on n'ouvre pas la bouche.
	32 On reçoit l'hospitalité, on donne à manger et à boire à des ingrats, et après cela on entend des paroles amères:
	33 Viens, hôte, prépare la table, et donne à manger aux autres avec ce que tu as.
