1 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered:	1 Prese allora la parola Sofar di Naama, e disse:
2 "Should a multitude of words go unanswered, and a man full of talk be vindicated?	2 « Può essere che il parolaio non abbia risposta, e che il linguacciuto abbia ragione?
3 Should your babble silence men, and when you mock, shall no one shame you?	3 Tu solo farai tacere gli uomini, e dopo aver scherniti gli altri, da nessuno sarai confutato?
4 For you say, 'My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in God's eyes.'	4 Tu hai detto: La mia parola è pura e sono senza macchia nel tuo cospetto.
5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips to you,	5 Oh! volesse Dio parlar lui con te, e aprirti le sue labbra,
6 and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom! For he is manifold in understanding. Know then that God exacts of you less than your guilt deserves.	6 per manifestarti i segreti della sapienza, i molteplici aspetti della sua legge! Allora capiresti che esige da te molto meno di quello che non meritino le tue colpe.
7 "Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty?	7 Pretendi forse di investigare le vie di Dio, e di comprendere perfettamente l'Onnipotente?
8 It is higher than heaven --what can you do? Deeper than Sheol--what can you know?	8 E' più alto del cielo, e come farai (ad arrivarci)? E' più profondo dell'inferno, e come potrai scrutarlo?
9 Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.	9 La sua misura è più lunga della terra, e più larga del mare.
10 If he passes through, and imprisons, and calls to judgment, who can hinder him?	10 Se mette sossopra tutte le cose, o le confonde insieme, chi potrà dirgli nulla?
11 For he knows worthless men; when he sees iniquity, will he not consider it?	11 Egli ben conosce la vanità degli uomini ed è possibile che vedendo l'iniquità non se ne curi?
12 But a stupid man will get understanding, when a wild ass's colt is born a man.	12 L'uomo stolto si leva in superbia, e si crede nato libero come il puledro dell'asino salvatico.
13 "If you set your heart aright, you will stretch out your hands toward him.	13 Ma se tu, che hai indurato il cuore nello stendere le mani verso di lui,
14 If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in your tents.	14 toglierai l'iniquità dalla tua mano, e non farai rimaner l'ingiustizia nella tua dimora,
15 Surely then you will lift up your face without blemish; you will be secure, and will not fear.	15 allora potrai alzare la tua faccia senza macchia, sarai incrollabile e senza paura,
16 You will forget your misery; you will remember it as waters that have passed away.	16 dimenticherai la miseria; te ne ricorderai come d'acqua passata.
17 And your life will be brighter than the noonday; its darkness will be like the morning.	17 Sul far della sera ti sorgerà una specie di luce meridiana, e quando ti crederai finito, sorgerai come la stella del mattino.
18 And you will have confidence, because there is hope; you will be protected and take your rest in safety.	18 Sarai pieno di fiducia per la speranza che ti attende, e anche sotterrato dormirai tranquillo.
19 You will lie down, and none will make you afraid; many will entreat your favor.	19 Riposerai, e non verrà nessuno a spaventarti, e moltissimi supplicheranno la tua faccia.
20 But the eyes of the wicked will fail; all way of escape will be lost to them, and their hope is to breathe their last."	20 Ma gli occhi degli empi verranno meno, non vi sarà scampo per essi, e la loro speranza diverrà l'abominazione della loro anima ».
